New guidelines on how spacing should be used around

mathematical operators in Degruyter journals
Leave a medium space before and after binary operation signs [+, -
(minus), , , (multiplication sign), *(only when it represents a
multiplication sign not when it represents a reciprocal axis), =, , , <, >,
, , , , , , etc.]
Leave a medium space before and after and all other operation signs
[+, - (minus), , , etc.]
Do not add a space when such signs as [+, -, or ] are used to modify
symbols or expression (a value of -3, 1, the pH value was >7, ~10 ml]
Do not add a space when operations appear as subscripts or superscripts
(e.g. g l-1)
Leave a medium space on either sign of the minus sign to indicate
subtraction (e.g. 1x 2y) the minus sign is (2212,Alt+X)
Omit the space after the minus sign if a negative quantity is represented
(e.g. p = 0.05)
When used to represent anions and cations there should be no space
[e.g. Na+, Ca2+, Hg2+, PO43-]
No space when : is used for ratio

medium space refers to typesetting, copyeditors should just include a

normal space)
