Good morning. This is the 8 oclock news with Silvia Jackson. At least twelve
people have been injured, and two are critically ill in hospital, as forest fires
continue to blaze in the South West of the country. Over 350 fire fighters have
worked all through the night to try and stop the fires spreading closer to
housing areas. Local residents say the fires were started intentionally and
have been made worse by the hot weather.
The government will be meeting trade unions later this week to discuss a pay
rise for nurses working in the public sector. Nursing staff have complained that
they work long hours, do too much overtime, and dont get enough vocational
training. The unions have asked for a 5% pay rise but the government has
offered 2.7%.
Reports out today show that British children still need to take more care of
their diet and health. Dr Abdul Panasar said that children are eating too much
ready-cooked and takeaway food and should be doing more sport rather than
sitting in front of a computer or TV screen. The government has asked for
another inspection of school meals.
And now the sports news ... Arsenal have been beaten by Real Madrid 2-1 in
the semi finals of the European Cup. Arsenals goal was a penalty taken by
Henri. Roberto Carlos was given a red card for a second bookable offence ...
and tennis ... Rafa Nadal has beaten Roger Federer 64, 46, 75, 63 in the
Australian Open ...

Caroline So how was your holiday then? Did you enjoy it?
Janine Well, it was certainly different. Ive never done anything like it
before! Actually, it was quite a difficult trip.
Caroline Why, because of all the driving?
Janine Yeah, it was very tiring, even though there were three of us who
could drive.
Caroline Who did you go with in the end?
Janine With Andy and Simon. Neither of them mind driving long distances.
Caroline So, how many hours driving did you do on average a day?
Janine Probably about 6-8 hours.
Caroline That doesnt sound much like a holiday to me!
Janine I know, but it was worth it! We went to some fantastic places.
Caroline So, where did you set out from?
Janine Well, we started from Melbourne, and then drove north up into the
desert as far as Ayres Rock.
Caroline Oh there Ive seen pictures of it in books. Isnt it called Ulhuru
now though?
Janine Yes, the aboriginal people in that area have got more control now
over their land, and what happens there with tourism, so thats the
aboriginal name for it.
Caroline And whats it actually like in real life?
Janine I tell you, its totally amazing! Its just out there in the middle of the
desert and the rock changes colour as the sun changes position at
different times of the day.
Caroline Wow, sounds incredible. Did you camp or stay in hotels while you
were there?
Janine We camped out most of the time. I dont usually like roughing it
much but it was ok. Andys got a great tent ... it was actually quite
luxurious!
Caroline Whats it like being out in the desert all that time? Didnt you get
scared?
Janine Hmm no, not really. Its quite beautiful in a strange kind of way
and the stars at night are amazing. You really feel like the world is
round!
Caroline So, where did you go after Ulhuru?
Janine We drove on north to Kakadu National Park which is a fantastic
place although you have to be careful of the crocodiles!
Caroline Crocodiles? No way!
Janine Oh yes. And a few snakes and spiders and that! We finally went up
to Cairns on the coast. I almost couldnt believe it when I saw the
sea again! After driving all that way, you are quite desperate to get
to water!
Caroline Sounds incredible. So, would you do it again then?
Janine Yeah, if I had enough time, Id do a similar trip. Id like to visit the
West coast next time though.
