REGULAR BOARD MEETING


SEPTEMBER 6, 2017
RESOLUTION TO RECOMMIT

Board Resolution Adopted this ______ Day of September 2017.

Having recently appointed Dr. M. Ann Levett, Ed. D., as Superintendent of the Savannah-Chatham

County Public School System (SCCPSS) on May 22, 2017, and to express support for the Superintendent

and to reaffirm and individually recommit to the continued success of SCCPSS, the Superintendent, the

Board of Public Education for the City of Savannah and the County of Chatham (the Board), and each of

its several members, Resolves as follows:

I. The Board and the Superintendent have discussed their respective roles and responsibilities

and have established protocols for working together as the District transitions to new leadership.

II. Those protocols include the Boards focus on policy and accountability, with the focus on

student achievement, while the Superintendent is responsible for policy implementation and the day-to-day

operation of the SCCPSS.

III. The Superintendent and Board agree that the protocols have been implemented and

honored since her appointment on May 22, 2017.

IV. In furtherance of the Boards support for the Superintendent and its focus on student

achievement, fiscal responsibility, and good governance, the Board reiterates and recommits to sound

operating principles, including but not limited to:

A. Board members recommit to attending and participating in regularly scheduled and

specially called Board meetings, arriving at those meeting informed and prepared to discuss the

issues identified on the Board Agenda, and working with one another collaboratively and in the

best interests of SCCPSS, regardless of differences of opinion that may arise.

B. Board members recommit to ensuring that the Board operates responsibly and

functions effectively.

C. Board members recommit to continuing to make decisions that are in the best

interest of SCCPSS based on the available facts, the Superintendents recommendation, where

applicable, and his or her independent judgment. Board members will not place their own interests

or the desires of others above those of SCCPSS.

D. Board members recommit to relying upon the Superintendent, as the chief

executive officer, to implement Board decisions by ensuring that SCCPSS leadership at all levels

has the autonomy to meet goals for achievement and instruction and to manage day to day

operations of the District efficiently and effectively.

E. Board members recommit to upholding and enforcing all applicable federal and

state laws, all rules and regulations of the Georgia Department of Education, SCCPSS policy,

including but not limited to the Code of Ethics for Local Boards of Education, and the Boards

bylaws.

F. Board members recommit to supporting the decisions of the Board as a whole,

regardless of whether they opposed such decisions.

G. Board members recommit to working with the Superintendent to establish and

maintain Board policies that ensure the safe and effective administration of the SCCPSS and its

schools, the prudent and accountable use of SCCPSS resources, and the effective education of

SCCPSS students.

H. Board members and the Superintendent recommit to ensuring that the SCCPSS

maintains and communicates at all levels of the organization a purpose and direction for continuous

improvement that commits to high expectations for learning as well as shared values and beliefs

about teaching and learning.

I. Board members and the Superintendent recommit to ensuring that the SCCPSS

operates under governance and leadership that promotes and supports student performance and

school effectiveness.

J. Board members and the Superintendent recommit to ensuring that leadership and

staff at all levels of the SCCPSS foster a culture consistent with the Districts purpose and direction.

V. The Superintendent and Board recommit to the Districts mission, which is to ignite a

passion for learning and teaching at high levels and its vision, which is from school to the world: All

students prepared for productive futures.
