Judge rejects putting
off trial for Menendez
Defense team sought delay so Democratic senator could cast key votes

NEWARK - A judge has denied a request by U.S. Sen.
Robert Menendez to adjust the schedule of his corrup-
tion trial so he can be in Washington, D.C., for critical
votes.
U.S. District Judge William H. Walls blasted the mo-
tion by Menendezs legal team as nigh frivolous and
asserted that the court will not serve as concierge to
any party or lawyer.
Defendant Menendez claims that he is in a unique
situation because his voting duties are on a schedule
not of his own making, Walls wrote in an opinion pub-
lished online Friday. But so are the duties of the radio
repairman, the cab driver, and the businessman. Yet
none would claim the right to dictate the schedule of
their own criminal trial.

TOMS RIVER - Eruvs are appearing
in parts of North Dover, drawing ques-
tions and concerns from some resi-
dents.
But Township Administrator Paul J.
Shives said Toms River doesnt regulate
eruvs, and said legal research conducted
by the township indicates there is no le-
gal basis for municipalities to do so.
An eruv is a ritual enclosure, a visible
boundary, often made of wire strung be-
tween utility poles. It allows Orthodox
Jews to carry objects like house and car
keys, push strollers or carry children
outside their homes on the Sabbath (sun-
set Friday through sunset Saturday) and
other Jewish holidays.
As more Orthodox Jews have pur-
chased homes in Toms River, eruvs have
been erected in several neighborhoods,
Shives said.

The first time Daniel Quiyu felt held
back by his lack of legal status, he was a
high school senior applying to colleges.
Quiyu, who arrived here illegally as
a child from Ecuador, didnt qualify for
financial aid. While he went to Fair-
leigh Dickinson University on a schol-
arship, he still faced a hefty tuition rate
as an international student.
Then came the Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals program. Quiyu got
a drivers license and a work permit.
After graduating with a film degree, he
landed a job at Princeton University.

Gas prices, churned by factors relat-
ed to Hurricane Harvey, have shot up in
the run-up to Labor Day weekend.
In New Jersey, the average price for
regular grade gasoline jumped to $2.54
a gallon on Friday, up 9 cents in the past
24 hours, according to AAA. The aver-
age price is up 18 cents from last week.
And over the next few days, prices
could shoot up another 10 to 15 cents be-
fore the pace of increase settles by the
middle of next week, said Patrick De-
Haan, senior petroleum analyst at Gas-
Buddy.com. You will see some hefty
increases, he said.
Whats behind the spike? Refiners
that produce gasoline in the Northeast
are starting to ship some gas to south-
ern states like Florida, DeHaan said.
Meanwhile, supply levels in the Gulf
have tightened as refineries and pipe-
