Parish Mission Statement

St. Anthony of Padua

A Roman Catholic Church in the
African-American Tradition

We are called to embody the universality of the Catholic Church

by nurturing the genius of African-American spirituality and
by welcoming all people. Drawing on the spirit of St. Francis,
whose followers formed and guided this parish, we seek to reach
out in loving and joy-filled concern to the changing needs of
persons and groups on their journey through life.

We are committed to reach out together to the alienated, inactive,

and un-churched in West Greenville and beyond. We are
dedicated to the education in faith of all generations, especially
those who learn and serve in our parish school.

2
Your Time, Talent and Treasure
And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
Romans 5:5

Our conscience is that inward reflection that makes us consider and review the choices and
decisions we make and the actions we take in life. What is it that drives this thought
process? It is the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts.

As you browse through this catalog, let the Holy Spirit reside in your heart and mind to help
you determine how to use your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. We are called to be good
stewards of the gifts we have been given, but the process of discerning what we do with those
gifts is often difficult, because of the demands of family, work, friends and other needs. It
is important to remember we have been called to give back a portion of what we have and to
help one another. The sacrifices it takes to do this are often difficult and humbling, but
result in great rewards, as we help and care for others.

Your gifts are needed in many ways throughout our church parish and community. Take
some time to decide how you can give 2-4 hours per month of volunteer time, using the
many varying talents you have, or share your financial blessings. Your sacrificial giving
is an expression that God is truly number one in your life, and the Holy Spirit will be there
to help with your decisions.

Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that
you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:2

So, please join us in the journey of spiritual growth by using your gifts of time, talent and
treasure to respond to the need we all have to give of ourselves and grow in the Spirit.

Parish History
In the mid 1930’s, Fr. Sydney F. Dean, a diocesan priest assigned as an associate pastor at
St. Mary’s Church in Greenville, felt called to evangelize the African-American. The first
work was done with the Sisters of Mercy of St. Mary’s convent. On September 24, 1934,
Fr. Dean organized the St. Peter Claver Society, and the first members of the society were
baptized in May 1935. Because most of the members worked at St. Francis Hospital, the
group began to meet in the hospital chapel.

On February 1, 1939, Fr. Joseph Michael McGrath, O.F.M. arrived in Greenville as the first
pastor of the new mission church, built to serve the growing number of black Catholics. Six
acres of land on Gower Street were purchased by the Franciscans, and ground was broken
for construction of a combined chapel and friary on May 1, 1939. The new friary and
chapel were virtually completed by the end of August; the first Mass was celebrated on
Sunday, September 3rd. The mission, under the title “St. Anthony of Padua” was formally
dedicated by Bishop Walsh on Mission Sunday, October 22, 1939.

For several years the friars and parishioners sought to build an activities center. This dream
became a reality on July 17, 1949, when a solemn Mass was offered in the new center. On
June 17, 1950, an old farmhouse at 204 Douthit Street was purchased to be used as a school
and convent. After much hard work and preparation on the old house, the kindergarten
through fourth grade school opened on September 9, 1951. Sisters from the Franciscan
community of Stella Niagara were assigned to staff the school.

The parish continued to grow and, by 1956, numbered 232 people. At that time, a new
church and school were built. The school served kindergarten through eighth grade. Since
1986, the Franciscan Sisters of Williamsville, New York, have staffed the school. The parish
continued to grow, and the church was expanded in 2002 to accommodate over 600 people.

What is Stewardship?
Stewardship is about God’s gift to us and how we respond and build a loving
relationship with him. When we give of ourselves, we grow in our relationship
with God and in our spirituality. Giving back to God by using our gifts of
time, talent and treasure is a personally enriching experience.

How do we get started?

Through prayer, you’ll figure out what you can give back to God of your time,
talent and treasure.

• Commit 2 2--4 hours per month to God’s work. This includes things such as
being involved in St. Anthony’s as a member of the choirs, being a lector or
Eucharistic minister, ushering, working the food pantry, visiting shut-ins,
working on the housing initiative, and participating in the many
opportunities to serve others in the Greenville area.
• Develop and execute a statement for tithing of treasure. This is an
anonymous statement of your intention to contribute to St. Anthony’s,
which will help us budget appropriately.

More about tithing:

• It is not about fund raising
• It is not just a mathematical principle or percentage
• It is about being honest with God
• It is a commitment appropriate for you that you seek to grow over time
• It is a decision you make through prayer

Choir and Music Ministry members lead the faithful in the worship of God in the liturgy. It
is not just well trained ears, balance voicing or energetic stage presence. True worship is an
extension of love and relationship with God. Singing and other musical talents can be used
in the gospel, men’s, youth or traditional choirs.

In this ministry families volunteer to spend time in prayer for vocations. The Elijah Cup is
a consecrated chalice that provides a focal point of prayer. A family registers to pick up the
cup and at the end of a mass the family is presented the cup to take home for one week. The
family then prays together each day for vocations. The Elijah Cup is returned at the end of
the week.

Eucharistic ministers administer the Body and Blood of Christ to the assembled faithful.
The Eucharist strengthens the people of God to become more like Christ by following his
teachings and examples. Eucharistic ministers share this faith with the faithful at
communion. Eucharistic ministers are also responsible for taking the Eucharist to
parishioners who are in hospitals or nursing homes.

Lectors are readers of the word. A very important part of the life of the church, they proclaim
the scripture so that we experience the Christ present now in our midst and present in the past
events of salvation history. Liturgy allows us to participate in those events and experience
the power and ability to transform, as we strive to imitate the life of Christ.

This is a ministry of hospitality. The usher is the first face of Christ to greet God’s people as
they assemble for worship and prayer. The greeting of “good morning” helps the usher to
discretely discern how to welcome and what help to offer. Ushers serve in a Christ-like
manner by being prayerful, patient, helpful, and understanding. Ushers radiate the joy
that faith brings, as they serve the needs of others.

Religious education prepares our children and adults to live faith-filled lives, based on the
life of our Savior Jesus Christ. The goal is to inspire everlasting love for God and his people.
The greatest satisfaction of this ministry is that in helping others to grow in faith, we also
grow in our own faith. We are inspired to live spiritual lives that are examples for others to
follow. We serve God by serving other people. The faithful involved in this ministry accept
responsibility for preparation.

The Grief Support Ministry offers bereavement services to help parishioners cope with the
feelings surrounding the loss or impending loss of a loved one. The Hospice Ministry is the
link between St. Anthony of Padua parishioners and the Open Arms Hospice. Volunteers
are a vital part of the Hospice team; they visit patients, read to patients, run errands, write
letters for patients, provide respite for the caregivers, provide office support, and help with
special staff events. Eucharistic ministers are involved by taking communion to the
patients. Volunteers also provide information about hospice care and bereavement and grief
support to the community and parish.
