III. Course Description
This course is for students who have successfully completed the first half of Algebra I. It covers the
common core state standards that are taught in the second half of Algebra I. Topics include
systems of linear equations and inequalities, exponents, exponential functions, radical and rational
exponents, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations and functions, and patterns of bivariate
data.
Students will learn to problem solve in various situations, solve for and interpret data, use multiple
mathematical models, and reason abstractly and quantitatively.

IV. International Baccalaureate Focus

At Huron, our MYP and DP courses serve to accommodate the range of abilities, needs, and interests
of our students as well as to prepare students for a broad spectrum of universities and careers.
Our courses aim to enable students to:
develop mathematical knowledge, concepts, and principles
develop logical, critical and creative thinking
employ and refine their powers of abstraction and generalization
use IB rubrics to evaluate their work and that of their peers
Courses are designed to have students learn through dynamic cycles of inquiry, action, and reflection.
We also strive to encourage students to appreciate the international dimensions of mathematics and its
many cultural and historical perspectives.
Rubrics provide a set of criteria for students' work and projects that include descriptions of levels of
performance on the criteria.

V. Materials
Notebook and folder
Pencils with erasers
Textbook: Holt Algebra I (my.hrw.com, Username: Students AAPS email address)
Scientific Calculator (recommend TI 30 XII) or Graphing Calculator (TI-84)

VII. Expectations
Your success in this class depends heavily on your preparation and participation. I expect all students
to participate and contribute meaningfully in class. I also expect all students to be respectful of other
students, teachers, and themselves. Each student is expected to help create a class environment that
promotes learning, dignity, and mutual respect for others. Therefore, students are not to use any
electronic devices in class unless I have granted prior permission. This includes but is not limited to
cell phones (calling or texting), I-pods, MP3s, handheld devices, digital cameras, electronic tablets, etc.
Cell phones may NOT be used as calculators.

VIII. Classwork
Classwork is assigned for students to practice their learning and is a tool to help students master the
content of this course. Assignments are given during class and are to be completed in the time frame
allowed during class unless otherwise specified.

IX. Assessments
A variety of assessment methods are used in this course. In addition to monitoring projects and
assignments to gauge students understanding, the following formal assessments are used:
Quizzes- usually given weekly or biweekly.
Exams- unit tests and a final exam.
Projects- may be individual or team assignments.

Retake Policy: Retakes will be given in accordance with the Huron Math Department policy. A ll
assignments must be done before the original test date. Retakes are given for credit attainment or
recovery. Therefore retakes will be given to students scoring less than 80%, with a maximum score of
80% on the retake. A retake on a Chapter Test must be taken within one week of the return of the
graded Chapter Test to the student. It is the students responsibility to contact the teacher to take a
retake Chapter Test. Quizzes cannot be retaken. Each semester the lowest quiz grade will be dropped
if the student has no unexcused absences and no more than two unexcused tardies. If a student has
an unexcused absence or tardy on the day of the original test, the student forfeits the right to a
retake test.

X. Attendance/Tardy Policy
Attendance/Tardies: Students are given two days to make up the work for one excused absence.
Students are expected to take the initiative in asking for make up work.
Attendance is important in mathematics, as in all classes, because if a student is not present in class, a
great deal of material is missed that cannot be made up effectively.
When a student is absent it is their responsibility to get their make-up work upon return. All
assignments are included on the course schedule and posted in the classroom and on Google
Classroom.
A folder with class handouts and notes is maintained in the classroom for students to access for
missed assignments.
Students will be given two days to make up work for one missed day.
Missed quizzes and exams need to be made up as soon as possible and within two weeks. It is
the students responsibility to be available to make up exams and quizzes. If students do not
make up a quiz or exam, the grade will be a zero.

X. Course Schedule
The weekly course schedule provides information about classroom activities and assignments. A copy
is provided to each student, posted in the classroom, and posted on Google Classroom. Students are
encouraged to use this schedule and their Daily Planner to keep track of their assignments and
manage their time to promote the highest possible success in this course.
X. Grading Computation
Grades will be updated at least weekly in PowerSchool. Students and parents are encouraged to
monitor grades using PowerSchool.
The semester grade is calculated by weighing each quarter grade as 40% and the semester exam as
20%.
Each quarter grade will be calculated as follows:

Classwork, Bellwork 20%

Quizzes 30%

Tests & Projects 50%

Total 100%

Grading Scale:
The Huron High School common grading scale is used to calculate marking period and semester
grades.
100 A+ 87 B+ <90 77 C
+ <80 67 D
+ <70 F <60

93 A < 100 83 B <87 73 C

<77 63 D
<67

90 A- <93 80 B- <83 70 C- <73 60 D

- <63

XI. Student Progress and Grade Reports

All grades are posted in PowerSchool with separate access for students and parents. Grades are
updated weekly, at the least. School-wide progress reports are sent out each interim period. There are
scheduled parent-teacher conferences during the school year. Additionally, emails may be sent to the
parent email address submitted on the Parent Contact Form.

XII. Cheating
Cheating will not be tolerated. Students who give or receive answers to exams or quizzes, copy
assignments, or allow others to copy their work, or cheat in any other manner will receive a zero
grade on the assignment, quiz, or exam.
No talking is allowed during quizzes and exams. If students talk during a quiz or exam they may
receive a zero score.

XIII. Availability of Instructor

I attend Math Lab after school at least twice per week. Math Lab is open four days per week and
students are encouraged to attend Math Lab if they need extra help beyond class time. If a student or
parent needs to speak with me individually outside of class, they are welcome to make an appointment.
The best method to contact me is email.
