NOTES
traditional worship
Do you recall one of the questions Moses asked God at
the burning bush? Loosely put, If the Israelites ask
me, what is the name of the God who sent you, what
should I say? In Scripture much was associated with
a name. A name reflected the character or meaning
of that person. In Gods case, authority and power
were associated with His name. In fact, Gods Name
was so holy, the priest would not say it aloud. The
fact that Moses came as a result of the NAME, I AM,
sending him on the mission to lead the Israelites out of
captivity, gave credence to his call before the people.
In fact, God was given several names throughout the
Bible. In verse one of our opening hymn, we praise God
as the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is. Verse
two tells of the heavenly beings praising God. Verse
three tells of the people from earth who have died and
who are now in heaven praising God as the Church on
earth and the Church in heaven are united in worship.
Finally, verse four names the Three in One God as the
one before whom we bend the knee in worship. Three
of the four verses refer to praising the name of the
Lord. As you sing, be mindful that you are not simply
singing words, but offering praise to the name that
is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every
knee will bow and every tongue confess, Jesus is
Lord to the glory of God the Father. Our offertory and
closing hymn, both sing of the Name above all names.
