TheB46engineisbasedonthefamiliarN20engine.ThefamiliarTVDI technologyisusedinallnew
engines.Anoffsetoraxialoffset,asusedintheN20engine,isnotusedwiththenewB46engine.
Thenewenginegenerationismainlycharacterizedbylowerfuelconsumptionandfewerexhaust
emissions(ULEVII).Toachievelowfuelconsumption,amap-controlledoilpump,characteristicmap
thermostatandinjectionsystemwithdirect-railandelectricarcwire-sprayedcylinderbarrels,among
others,areused.Allenginesalsoreceiveanautomaticenginestart-stopfunctionandintelligent
alternatorcontrolasafurtherEfficientDynamicsmeasure.

controlunitgeneratesanaudiosignalwiththisinformation.Thisaudiosignalismodulatedtotheaudio
signaloftheheadunitandforwardedtotheloudspeakers.Anenginesoundcorrespondingtothe
drivingconditionisoutputtothedriverviathespeaker.

Recirculationofthecleanedblow-bygasesintheintakearea.
Whentheengineisinoperation,gases(referredtoas"blow-bygases")fromthecombustionchamber
passthroughthecylinderwallsandenterthecrankcase.Theseblow-bygasescontainunburnedfuel
andallelementsoftheexhaustgas.Inthecrankcasetheyaremixedwithengineoilwhichisavailable
thereintheformofoilmist.
Thevolumeoftheblow-bygasesisdependentontheenginespeedandtheload.Withoutcrankcase
ventilationexcesspressurewouldariseinthecrankcase.Thisexcesspressurewouldbepresentinall
cavitiesconnectedtothecrankcase(e.g.oilreturnduct,chainshaft,etc.)andleadtooilleakageatthe
seals.
Thecrankcaseventilationpreventsthis.Itroutestheextensivelyengineoil-freeblow-bygasesto
thecleanairpipeandtheseparateddropletsofoilflowbacktotheoilsumpviaanoilreturnpipe.
Inaddition,thecrankcaseventilation,incombinationwithapressurecontrolvalve,ensuresalow
vacuuminthecrankcase.

directlyupstreamoftheintakevalves.InsystemscontrolledbyValvetronic,thethrottlevalveisalso
lightlyshutintheseoperatingconditionstoguaranteetheengineventilationfunction.
Apurgeairline,whichisconnectedtothecleanairpipeaheadoftheexhaustturbochargerandtothe
crankcase,routesfreshairviaanon-returnvalvedirectlyintothecrankcasechamber.Thebiggerthe
vacuuminthecrankcase,thebiggertheairmassintroducedintothecrankcase.Thispurgingprevents
thepressurecontrolvalvefromicingup.
Chargedoperation
Asasignificantoverpressureprevailsintheintakepipeduringturbochargedoperation,theblow-by
gasescannotbeintroducedupstreamoftheintakevalvesintheintakeport.Theblow-bygasesare
thereforeintroducedintothecleanairpipeinthisoperatingcondition.

short,ithasbeenpossibletopositionthecatalyticconverterveryclosetothewastegatevalve.Asthe
exhaustgasflowsintothecatalyticconverterattheperfectangleandbecauseofitspositionclose
totheengine,thecatalyticconverterreachesitsoperatingtemperatureveryquickly.Ifthewastegate
valveisopenedwhencold,pulsationoftheexhaustgasmaycausevibrationsinthewastegatevalve,
whichareperceivedasnoise.Thisisnotduetoadefectivecomponent,andisnormalrunningnoise.
Thisnoisebecomeslessaudibleasthetemperatureofthecomponentincreases.
Controlsensor
Withastoichiometricair/fuelratio(=1),theproportionofoxygenintheexhaustgasisidealfor
conversionofthepollutantsinthe3-waycatalyticconverter.Bymeasuringtheoxygencontentinthe
exhaustgas,theoxygensensoroftheDigitalMotorElectronicsdeliversimportantinformationfor
mixturepreparation.
AbroadbandoxygensensorwiththedesignationLSUADVhasbeenspeciallydevelopedforengines
withexhaustturbochargersandisusedasthecontrolsensor.Oneofthemajorcharacteristicsof
broadbandoxygensensorsistheirextensivemeasuringrange.ThemeasuringrangeoftheLSUADV
isfromalambdaof=0.65to=air.
ThebroadbandoxygensensorLSUADVisacombinationofameasuringcellandpumpcell.Thereis
asmalldiffusiongapbetweenthesetwocellswhichservesasameasuringchamberandisconnected
totheexhaustgasduct.Themeasuringcelloperatesaccordingtotheprincipleofavoltage-jump
sensorandmeasurestheresidualoxygencontentintheexhaustgas.Ifthefuel-airmixtureistoolean
(>1),thecontrolelectronicsappliesvoltagetothepumpcellsothatoxygenionsarepumpedout
ofthediffusiongap.Ifthemixtureistoorich(<1),oxygenionsarepumpedintothediffusiongap
byactivatingthepumpcellaccordingly.Thepumpflowrequiredtocontrolthepumpcellisdirectly
proportionaltotheoxygenconcentrationandthereforeservesasthecontrolvariablefortheairratio.
Thecontrolstrategyhasbeendevisedsothattheoxygenconcentrationintheareaofthediffusion
gapcorrespondstoanairratioof=1.Asthiscontrolmethodisextremelyfastandincredibly
accurate,thevoltagevalueofthemeasuringcellalwaysremainsataconstantlevel(450mV).

controlmoduleprocessesthepulse-widthmodulatedsignalandwithhelpofaninvertergeneratesa
three-phaseACvoltageU,V,Wtoactivatethethree-phasemotoroftheelectricfuelpumpaccording
torequirements.
IfthePWMdatalineisdisconnected,theelectricfuelpumpisactivatedwiththemaximumsystem
performance.IfaPWMdatalineisinterrupted,thisonlyleadstoafaultcodeentry.Thecustomeris
notinformedaboutthisstatus,bytheilluminationofawarningandindicatorlight,forexample.The

Ifatestcylinderisoperatedwhentheair/fuelratioistoohigh,thespeedatthecrankshaftdrops
rapidly.
Theenginespeedvariationsatthecrankshaftarenotevaluateddirectly,butratherthechangesin
smoothrunningduringengineoperation.Roughrunningofthecylindersinrelationtooneanotheris
balancedoutbyaso-called'cylinderbalancingcontrol'.Thetestcylinderintherichrangetherefore
bringsaboutaminorchangeinroughrunningandthetestcylinderintheleanrangebringsabouta
majorchangeinroughrunning.
MixtureerrorsdeterminedarestoredasafaultcodeentryintheDigitalMotorElectronics.Thefault
codeentryprovidesinformationaboutwhichcylinderisaffectedandtherichorleanvaluedetermined.

availableintheservicefunctions.InordertoinformtheDigitalMotorElectronicsabouttheinjector
replacement,everyULEVIIsolenoidvalveinjectorwiththesamedummyvalue(215)istaughtin.
Oncetheteach-inprocedurehasbeensuccessfullycompleted,thestoredadaptationsareresetand
newadaptationsaretaughtinviatheCVOandCIMfunction.
Whenthesolenoidvalveinjectorsarereplaced,theymustbestartedupwiththeassistanceofthe

filmairmassmeter,aprecisesubstitutevaluecanbecalculatedforthecylinderfillingwiththehelpof

Thetemperaturesensormeasuresthetemperatureinsidethecontrolunit.Ifthetemperaturethere
risestoosharply,multiplefuelinjectionisreducedforexample,inordertocooltheoutputstages

Asfaultsintheareaoftheignitionsystemdirectlyaffectthequalityoftheexhaustgas,theignition
processesaremonitoredbytheDigitalMotorElectronics.Duringthisprocess,thecombustionperiod
fortheignitionofeachindividualcylinderisevaluatedasapriority.Thevoltagedifferenceofthe
primarycoilatterminal1andterminal15isdeterminedandevaluatedbycarryingoutameasurement

Toavoidcoatingthesparkplugelectrodewithfuel,itispositionedgeometricallybetweenthefuel-
injectionsprayoftheinjector.
Achangeintervalappliesforsparkplugsandtheymustberenewedinaccordancewiththe
manufacturer'sspecifications.Toavoiddamageandensureperfectfunctionofthesparkplugs,
