 Quick and Easy Bulky Weight Bobble Hat
This is a quick to knit, easy pattern suitable for a beginner.
The pattern has instructions for both knitting in the round and knitting flat on two needles.Choose
whichever method you prefer. If you are knitting in the round, the pattern always says double pointed
needles (dpns) but you can use a circular needle and just switch to dpns for the final few decrease rounds if
you prefer.

Suggested yarns:
The pattern uses super bulky yarn (5-6 wpi) (this is super chunky in the UK)
I used Wendy Serenity Super Chunky in Tarmac (1706)
Any super bulky yarn which knits to the correct tension will be fine.
Materials needed
Approx 75(85)(100) grams / 60(68)(80) metres / 66(75)(88) yards of yarn
8mm (US size 11) knitting needles either straight or double pointed according to your knitting method
10mm (US size 15) knitting needles either straight or double pointed according to your knitting method
Cardboard and scissors to make bobble template
A large eye tapestry needle to attach bobble and finish

Abbreviations
dpns = double pointed needles
K = knit
K2tog = knit two stitches together
K2togtbl = knit two stitches together through the back loops
P= purl
P2tog = purl two stitches together
st(s) = stitch (es)
[ ] = work the instructions in the brackets by the number of times indicated

Sizes:
3-6 years - head circumference 48-52cm (19-20) hat height 19cm (7) excluding bobble
6yrs - teen - head circumference 52-54cm (20-21) hat height 21cm (8) excluding bobble
Adult - head circumference 54-57cm (21-22), hat height 23cm (9) excluding bobble
Hats are stretchy and there is overlap between sizes. Measurements are a general guide only.

Gauge/Tension
9 to 10 sts to 10cm (4) square in stocking stitch on 10mm (US Size 15) needles
Please take time to knit a tension square. If the square is too small, knit again using larger size needles. If
your square is too big, try smaller sized needles

Instructions are given for the first size. The figures in brackets ( ) refer to the larger sizes.
Where only one figure is given, this applies to all three sizes.
It is a good idea to circle with a pencil the size you wish to make

Instructions for knitting in the round
Using 8mm (US 11) dpns, cast on 44(48)(52)
sts.
Place marker and join ready to knit in the round.
Round 1: [K1, P1] to end of round
Rounds 2 - 8: Repeat round 1
Change to 10mm (US size 15) needles
Round 9: [K1, P1] to end of round
Repeat round 9 until hat measures
15(17)(19)cm {6(6)(7)} from the cast on Row 10: [P1, K1] to last stitch, P1

Crown Shaping
Next Round: [K2togtbl, P2tog] to end of round
22(24)(26)sts
Next Round: [K1, P1] to end of round
Repeat this round 2 times more.
Next Round: [K2togtbl] to end of round
11(12)(13)sts
Next Round: Knit
Next Round: (1st and 3rd sizes) [K2tog] to last
stitch, K1
(2nd size) [K2tog] to end 6(6)(7)sts
Cut yarn, leaving approx 25cm (10) tail. Use a
tapestry needle to thread yarn end through the
live stitches remaining on your needles.
Remove them from needles, draw up thread
and secure. Weave tail in on reverse of hat
Weave in tail from cast on edge.
Instructions for knitting flat
Using 8mm (US 11) straight needles, cast on
45(49)(53)sts.
Row 1: (right side) [K1, P1] to last stitch, K1
Row 2: (wrong side) [P1, K1] to last stitch, P1
Rows 3 - 8: Repeat rows 1 and 2 three more
times
Change to 10mm (US size 15) needles
Row 9: [K1, P1] to last stitch, K1
Repeat rows 9 and 10 until hat measures
15(17)(19)cm {6(6)(7)} from the cast on
edge, ending with a wrong side row.
Crown Shaping
Next Row: [K2togtbl, P2tog] to last stitch, K1
23(25)(27)sts
Next Row: [P1, K1] to last stitch, P1
Next Row: [K1, P1] to last stitch, K1
Next Row: [P1, K1] to last stitch, P1
Next Row: [K2togtbl] to last stitch, K1
12(13)(14)sts
Next Row: Purl
Next Row: (1st and 3rd sizes) [K2tog] to end
(2nd size) [K2tog] to last stitch, K1 6(7)(7)sts
Cut yarn, leaving a long enough tail to sew up
seam. Use a tapestry needle to thread yarn end
through the live stitches remaining on your
needle. Remove them from needle, draw up
thread and secure.
Sew the side seam.

 Instructions for bobble
1. Cut two 8cm (3) diameter cardboard
circles. Cut a 3cm (1) diameter hole in the
centre of each.
Cut long lengths of yarn and wind into
sausages small enough to fit through the
hole.
3. Continue until no more yarn will fit through
the centre hole.
2. Place the two cardboard circles on
together and wind the yarn through the centre
and round the circles in an even and close
manner.
4. Use a sharp pair of scissors to snip through
the yarn around the circumference of the
circle.
