Pope's Easter Message Urges Iraqis To Rebuild

April 21, 2003 | By Michael McGuire (Foreign Correspondent)

VATICAN CITY In a strong voice accompanied by cheers from a rain-soaked crowd,
Pope John Paul II called for peace in Iraq in his Easter message and urged Iraqis
themselves to take charge of rebuilding their nation "with the support of the
international community."

The pontiff, 82, also issued a plea for an end to the "chain of hatred" that threatens world
development and asked God's help in avoiding a "tragic clash" between cultures and
religions.

"May faith and love of God make the followers of every religion courageous builders of
understanding and forgiveness [and] patient weavers of a fruitful inter-religious
dialogue," the pope said in his twice-yearly Urbi et Orbi (To the City and the World)
message after his celebration of Easter Mass in St. Peter's Square.

"Peace in Iraq!" the pope exclaimed to a crowd estimated at 60,000 who huddled under
crowded umbrellas during intermittent volleys of wind and rain. "With the support of
the international community, may the Iraqi people become the protagonists of the
collective rebuilding of their country."
