Such a good scout

It may have started with one little girl and one cardboard box,
but Georgia Stibbard soon generated quite the outpouring of
generosity in her home town.
At just seven years old Georgia, a Ballan Primary School
student and a member of the Ballan 1st Scout Group,
undertook a project as part of earning a new Scouts badge.
She decided to put a little cardboard box at the Ballan
supermarket with a poster on it asking for people to donate
items to The Soup Bus in Ballarat.
When dad Leo took Georgia to check her little cardboard box
a couple of days later, he saw that it was empty panicking,
he sent her to get milk, at the back of the store, to buy himself
enough time to quickly purchase some items and chuck
them in the box without Georgia noticing.
But, as it turned out, that wasnt necessary.
The lady at the checkout pulled me up and said, oh
you dont need to do that she took Georgia and I down
a corridor and there were already eight boxes, chock-a-
block full of things that people had donated, Leo told the
Moorabool News.
As the boxes were replaced, they kept filling up, and word
continued to spread over social media soon Georgias
campaign was all over facebook, and people were responding
with donations.
She ended up with 18 boxes full of donations, including
clothing, blankets, everything down to food.
And when Georgia donated it to the Soup Bus, they told her
it was twice as much as they had in stock.
The ladies at The Soup Bus were awesome, they made her
day and she made theirs. They asked Georgia to be a future
ambassador.
News of her success also spread through the online scouting
world, and both the Regional Leader and the State Leader of
Scouts Victoria visited Georgie to meet her.
She was pretty excited about it all. She didnt realise that
the community was so generous.
Supermarket manager Ben Hall said they were overwhelmed
by the response from the community.
We were extremely surprised, we could not believe how
well she did, such a phenomenal job.
Georgia now plans to make her cardboard box campaign an
annual effort.

Flavours to whet appetite

It sounds like this years Flavours of Moorabool

festival is going to taste particularly good.
Last years event drew 1800 people and now, with
Flavours of Moorabool in the capable hands of
Ballans Autumn Festival Committee, numbers are
expected to double this year.
Its a good time for locals to buy their tickets online,
because if they book early then there is a discount,
explained Ballan Autumn Festival President Kevin
Harper.
This years festival is focusing on craft beer and
cider with food to match.
Highlights include a world-renowned cocktail
maker, who also uses his skills to blend beer cocktails,
as well as sessions on how to make a port-style brew
at home, along with a new beer garden area to try
out the impressive range of craft beverages on offer
around warming fire pits and a range of food so
enticing that the Moorabool News is requesting that
many samples be sent to their office!
New this year we have Farming Moorabool, who
will be up in the chapel all day, with two question
and answer sessions there will be farmers from all
areas, dairy and beef and agriculture etc, speaking
about the joys and challenges of farming in
Moorabool, and also talking about organic farming
as well as farming with limited-use chemicals.
Flavours of Moorabool will be held at St Annes
Winery on Sunday 27 August tickets include a
free tasting glass, and an additional $5 optional cash
donation on the day can be made to the Myrniong
and Greendale CFA for parking.
Tickets are $15 online, $20 at the gate, and
accompanied children have free entry.

A troubled local man plagued with drug problems has

received his final warning in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates
court.
Tyson Barry narrowly avoided jail time for a string of
incidents this year, receiving 250 hours of unpaid community
work with a license disqualification for two years.

Primary School were lucky to emerge
unharmed last Tuesday when a vehicle
ploughed through a fence and into a
brick building at the school.
An 82-year-old female driver was
travelling east bound on Inglis Street
in Ballan when she lost control of
the vehicle at 2:34pm, crashing into a
classroom where up to 40 students were
located.
A policeman at the scene told The
Moorabool News he believed the
elderly driver may have accidently hit
the accelerator instead of the brake.
A spokesperson for St Brigids Primary
School said the students, and one
teacher, were evacuated from the
building unharmed.
All the children are fine; however, the
building is a bit worse for wear, the
spokesperson said.
The driver of the vehicle was
transported to the Ballarat Base Hospital
by ambulance with minor injuries.
Ballan Officer in Charge, Sergeant
Michael Kearnes said it is believed the
woman approached the Inglis and Stead
Street round-about, and a suspected
blown tyre resulted in her losing control
of the vehicle and swerving off the road.
The building, which suffered severe
structural damage, has been deemed
unsafe by police. Temporary fencing
has been placed around the structure
Sergeant Kearnes said it was very
fortunate no one was seriously harmed
in the incident as the end of the school
day was just 30 minutes after the
incident.

Only two weeks later, despite being unlicensed, Barry drove
an unregistered vehicle to the impound lot and attempted
to acquire a refund. Police viewed the CCTV footage and
witnessed Barry exit the drivers door of the vehicle.
Several weeks later on June 8, police responded to a triple 000
call for reckless driving on Fisken street in Bacchus Marsh.
Police found Barry at the scene with a Suzuki motorbike, and
upon an inspection of his person, they found just under one
gram of amphetamines, with a lesser quantity loose in his
pockets found later when searched at the police station.
Magistrate Geoffrey Robinson was extremely unimpressed
with the 21-year olds behaviour and demeaner, linking his
labelling of Barry as a dangerous nuisance to such acts as
saying, Ill see you in court, to police officers during his
arrest.
Barry was assessed as a high risk of reoffending by the
Community Corrections officer, a potential problem for Barry
when he faces court for a judicial monitoring on December
22 this year.
Magistrate Robinson concluded by warning Mr Barry, this
is your last chance, if you continue, Ill have to send you to
jail.

The Bacchus Marsh Maternity Unit
may be under construction, but it hasnt
stopped the delivery of over 100 babies.
The $2.5 million renovation commenced
in April this year, with the first stage
expected to be completed by April 2018.
Andrew Freeman, Chief Executive of
Djerriwarrh Health Services, said the
upgrade works were welcomed by staff
and families wanting to give birth.
He said since the refurbishment
commenced, 108 babies have been born,
with a record number of six babies born
within 24 hours between June 15 and 16
(as reported in The Moorabool News).
The refurbishment project will boost
the number of post-delivery beds in the
maternity unit from 11 to 15, and prepare
the health service to cater for up to 1,200
births per annum in the future.
Works will also include the upgrading
of existing nurse workstations and
delivery suites, as well as the addition of
a new three-bay nursery to the maternity
department.
The upgrade will better equip
and prepare the Service to meet the
immediate and future care needs of the
Bacchus Marsh and Melton communities,
and provide a more comfortable
environment, Mr Freeman said.
Renovation works have required us
to build a temporary new entrance to
the maternity unit, and I want to thank
patients and visitors for their patience
during this time.
During the upgrade works, the maternity
department will remain fully operational.
Families planning to give birth at the
Bacchus Marsh & Melton Regional
Hospital are welcome to take a tour or
speak to the Maternity Manager. For
more information, please call 5367 9600 to
arrange an appointment.

Station and Bacchus Marsh Transfer Station will be
closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day.
A decision on pool opening days will be made
in coming months, as with opening days for the
Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre, with any decision on
opening the pools on Boxing Day or New Years Day
to be dependent on temperatures above 23 degrees
on the days.
Emergency staffing and basic maintenance
operations will not be impacted by the Christmas
closure.

ELAINE TOWNSHIP IMPROVEMENT PLAN
Council will release the Elaine Township Improvement Plan at a community drop-in session
tonight, Tuesday 15 August 2017.
The Plan aims to strengthen town presence, safety and amenity for residents and visitors, and to
capture increased visitor spend.
Elaine was identied as a gateway to Moorabool Shire in the Small Towns and Settlement
Strategy. The Elaine Improvement plan was one of the recommendations from the Strategy
completed in 2016.
Located on the Midland Highway, the township is ideally placed to capture motorists travelling
between Ballarat and Geelong.
Residents of Elaine and surrounds, and other interested individuals are invited to the drop-in
information session on the Improvement Plan.
The session will be held tonight at the Elaine Mechanics Hall from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.

A Bacchus Marsh woman has received 125-hours
of community service for a racially fuelled attack
on a family at the Lerdederg Gorge picnic area.
The Bacchus Marsh court heard the attack was
then reciprocated by her children. Kylie Whelan
was given 12-months to complete her hours for the
truly poor behaviour.
On December 29 last year, Ms Whelan began a
racial tirade towards a family she perceived to be
of Indian decent. During the 20-minute scuffle
the court heard she spat at a few of the victims
associates, as well as telling them to go back to
where you came from. She believed that some
of the older victims of the attack were perving
on her, and decided to commence her expletive
ridden and highly intolerant rant.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt was highly
critical of Ms Whelans conduct, stating that her
behaviour was absolutely unacceptable and
when things like this are widely reported, it gives
an adverse appearance to our community.
Magistrate Klestadt also believed that the place
and company she chose for her verbal attack was
a large contribution to the severity of the incident.

Darley put on a fine display to score
a good win against a tough Sunbury
team. We were a depleted team with
several omissions due to injuries, sus-
pensions and other commitments. We
then lost our champion, playing-coach,
Heath Scotland who injured his calf
during the pre-game warm-up. The
mighty Devils were up against it and
relied on fielding old Darley Legends
Travis Minns and Drew Edwards along
with boy wonders Cooper Pepi and
with Matt Young (both from the U18.5s
side). Liam Cahill made his senior de-
