PAM HOSTS KLAF2017
The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) is hosting the annual flagship event, the Kuala Lumpur
Architecture Festival 2017 (KLAF2017), a celebration of Architecture and Design over an expanded
two-month period from 4 July 3 September. KLAF2017s Royal Patron Her Royal Highness Tengku
Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah launched the festivals website recently at
the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
KLAF is a main event of the architectural
calendar in Malaysia. Organised by PAM,
KLAF began as DATUM:KL Conference
in 2003, before growing into
a full-fledged festival starting
2011.
Themed, POWER is/and/to/
with/of/for ARCHITECTURE,
the festival is open to all
demographics beyond the
architectural fraternity and
re-configured as an extended
programme to be held city-
wide across Kuala Lumpur.
Most importantly, it aims to
celebrate talent, intelligence
and energy of individuals and
groups that are catalysts
of change in the Malaysian
architecture industry today.
This years KLAF2017 Director,
Ar. Ang Chee said the festival
has been restructured and
launched as a celebration of architecture
and cityscapes across Kuala Lumpur
over an expanded two-month period
from 4 July to 3 September.
PAM President, Ar. Ezumi Harzani Ismail
also shared the festival will provide a
platform for meaningful discussions.
We want to encourage engagement
on Architecture among members of
the public, media, industry leaders and
policy makers. I believe that it will provide
us with an oppor tunity to highlight
challenges that the A rchitec tur al
industry is currently facing and bring
forth solutions that will help us create
better cityscapes and dynamic urban
living spaces, said Ezumi.

Something a little more modern is
the Vela. Vela is a modular system
of segments placed together to

In 2017, the Cala chair established a
new design language that combines
large natural curves with a latticed
rope weave creating a majestic
spatial presence with transparent
and light surfaces. The idea evolved
and Doshi Levien created additional
pieces to make a collection including
a dining chair, a series of tables and
low foot stools. The Dining table has
a monolithic and bold presence,
providing contrast to the lightness of
the chairs. Set in to the table frame
are different tops including wood and
marble. The same frame construction
can be recognised in the low tables
and foot stools, which complete the
