Without wanting to draw particular attention to an individual, we
have most recently welcomed into our parish communities a Catechu-

A catechumen is defined as one receiving instruction in the basic doc-
trines of Christianity before admission to communicant membership in Ancient Faith Radio

In the ancient Church, the catechumenate, or time during which one is a
catechumen, often lasted for as much as three years and included not
only participation in the divine services but also catechesis, formal in-
struction from a teacher, often the bishop or appointed catechist. Exor-
cists often performed the catechetical role, as well, following their ini-
tial prayers of exorcism over the one being made a catechumen, which
is the traditional manner of receiving a catechumen into the community
of the Church. Catechumens are understood to be Christians upon begin-
ning their catechumenate, and should they die before baptism, they are
traditionally given an Orthodox funeral.

As the Church eventually became the majority religion of the lands in

which it sojourned, the catechumenate as an institution gradually died Liturgical Scripture
out in many places, as most Christians were being baptized shortly after Readings
birth. As Orthodoxy has moved into the West and Far East and begun August 2017

ALVIN DRAPAKA

10 years ago Alvins passing left us
with a large void in our lives, but he
did leave us with what it is to know
what strength meant and the
knowledge for guidance, uncondi-
tional love and his odd sense of hu-
morwhich remains with us and nev-
er ended with his passing.
In life he embraced every new op-
portunity with enthusiasm and clear-
ly shared that with all of us. From
owning an auto body shop in Two
Hills, working for a New Hollond
farm machinery garage, then into a
real estate and insurance office in
St. Paul, then owning St. Paul Car
Wash and FasGas station. From here
got a tree planting truck and moved
trees in the spring, summer and fall.
Finally he owned and operated Top-
line Tacklea fishing and hunting
store which was his love and began a
cycle of camping, fishing, hunting
and quading.
He was a dedicated volunteer with
many organizations, one being Kievs
-K-Hi youth camp for over 20 years.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity
Ukrainian Orthodox Church in
Glendon and was involved in all so-
cial activities within the church and
district churches.
Over the last 10 years all four of his
grandchildren have graduated. Chris-
topher was 1st, then Braedenfollowed by Aahesha and now Keagan
the last one this past May 2017. He also had wo weddings
Granddaughter Aahesha who carried his photo in her bouquet of flow-
ers and in a bracelet she wore during her special day; and grandson
Braeden who wore his ring as his own wedding band.
He now has three beautiful great granddaughtersLondyn, Aspyn and
Blake that definitely inherited some of his witty sense of humor and
other traits that we see in them.
 O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God. Have mercy on me, a sinner .
