XX
sentences: a), b), c) or d).
I was a little bit fat, always tired and not very fit so I wanted to do some sport. My only problem was that I
didnt know what to do. Ive got an old bicycle but I didnt enjoy cycling because there are a lot of cars on
the roads. Its dangerous! My parents told me to wear a helmet but my helmet was too big for me. Then I
started going to the gym. That was boring! I didnt know anybody there. So I decided to take up swimming.
I didnt like that very much. I swam up and down with nobody to talk to. The water hurt my eyes, the pool
was crowded and the swimming pool was a long way from my house.
Then a friend asked me to join their volleyball club. I played at school a few times and I enjoyed it. I wasnt
very good at it but I knew some of the rules so I decided to join. I started a month ago. We train at the local
sports centre. We practise every Monday and Wednesday and then on Saturday or Sunday we have a
match. On the practice days we do a lot of exercises so I am losing weight and getting very fit. There are
about sixteen of us so we have two teams and I now have lots of friends. I really enjoy it and I never miss
a practice day.
Last weekend I played in my first match and we won! It was so good. I feel much better and I can
concentrate more at school. My teachers are happy, my parents are happy and I am too!

I dont like going to the beach, playing football or swimming. I prefer finding something to do. This year, I
have two different jobs. In the morning, I work in a car wash and in the afternoon, I help in my aunts shop.
The job in the car wash isnt much fun. I dont have to wash the cars. All I have to do is dry them when
they come out of the machine. Sometimes I have a chat with the customers and some of them give me a
tip too, usually one or two pounds. The owner of the car wash pays me 50 a week so I make quite a lot of
money.
But I love working in my aunts shop she has a cake shop and I love cakes, sweets and chocolate. In the
kitchen, I have to decorate the cakes with sugar, cherries and cream and in the shop I have to wrap up the
cakes in beautifully coloured boxes. My aunt doesnt pay me very much only 20 a week but Im happy
to do it so I can learn the job. When I finish school I want to have my own shop and make my own recipes.
I already have some fantastic ideas. What do you think of onion and apple tart or carrot and banana ice
cream? They sound terrible but just wait until you taste them.
With the money I earn I want to buy myself a new guitar. My other hobby is playing music in a band!

My father is going to change his job. Hes a builder and works for a company in Oxford. However, hes
going to set up his own building company with a friend of his. He wants to build houses which will be good
for the environment and help people save money. If his idea is successful, he will become rich. Of course,
he hopes that I will work with him when I leave school, but Im not sure if I want to work in the building
business. However, I think his idea is very good. My sister, Tania, doesnt really care if Dad gives up his
job. All shes interested in is her friends, her mobile phone and going to parties. Of course, if he becomes
rich, shell be happy because shell have more money to buy clothes with and to go out all the time. And
what does Mum think? Like all mums she is very worried. She is sure that when my dad starts his new
company, we wont have a lot of money. I have no doubt that my parents will discuss this change carefully,
but I know that my father will win in the end he always does. Last night after dinner I heard Mum say: If
you really think well get rich, then well move house, wont we? You know how much I want a bigger
house with a large garden.

Ive been to Japan lots of times because my father worked there. I remember the first time I went there. I
was twelve and I went with my parents. My dads friend in Japan had a daughter called Mayumi. She was
the same age as I was. Our parents decided we could spend some time together. As soon as we met, I
tried to shake her hand but she smiled and, with her hands together and her back very straight, she
moved the top part of her body towards me. This is a bow, she explained in her simple English. In Japan
we dont shake hands or kiss as you do in Europe or America. I learned my lesson and I started bowing to
everybody I met.
The same day we went shopping and I made another mistake. I gave the shop assistant the money. No,
no, said Mayumi, you shouldnt do that. Put the money in that little bowl and the shop assistant will take it
from there.
But why? I asked, very surprised.
Because we think its rude! she explained.
Eating was very different too. The Japanese eat their food with chopsticks wooden sticks. Mayumi taught
me how to use them. It took me a long time to learn! On our last day in Japan, I tried to give Mayumi some
of my fish for her to try.
You shouldnt do that! she said, its extremely rude! If you want me to taste some of your food, you
should put it here, on this clean plate. I will take it from there.
I was very embarrassed! I often taste my friends food when we go out to restaurants and it seemed a nice
thing to do.
Now Im 35 and often travel for my work. I still learn something when I visit a new country. That is why
travelling is so interesting and exciting!

Hi Sandra,
My friend Tonya from Scotland came to visit me last weekend. It was a big surprise! She turned up at my
house on Saturday morning.
Tonya is a very special friend. I met her when I was four years old. We were in the same class at school
for ten years and we always went to the cinema and to the shops together. Then I moved to Cambridge

with my family last year. I email her every day and speak to her on my mobile at the weekend. We have
the same interests - she loves dancing and riding her bike. She also likes playing football but I just like
watching it on TV. She is a lot of fun.
Have you got a special friend? Where did you meet? Do you like the same things?
Best wishes,
Janet
