Top 18 things to see in Riga
1. Town Hall Square Opposite the stone bridge
is one of Old Rigas main squares - Rtslaukums or Town
Hall Square. In the Middle Ages, it served as an open-air
market. The square was completely destroyed during World
War II, but the Town Hall, the House of the Blackheads,

the Schwabe House and the Statue of Roland have now
been fully reconstructed. The House of Blackheads was
built in the 14th century and belonged to the Guild
of Unmarried Merchants. At the time it was the most
prestigious venue in the city with a magnificent Dutch

2. St Peters Church The tallest of the Riga churches
is a significant landmark and a prime example of the 13th
century Gothic style. A lift inside the spire takes visitors to
two viewing platforms providing a fantastic panoramic

3. Lvu Square This square is relatively new, having
been built in the mid-20th century after World War II. An
interesting complex of 18th-century residential buildings
has been preserved here alongside the 18th-century Great

restaurants, clubs, and a number of outdoor cafes with live

4. Dome Square In the heart of Old Riga is its largest
square, around which the citys best outdoor cafes and
bars are situated. The squares current appearance dates
back to the 1930s when a number of its medieval buildings
were torn down. On the edge of the square is the Dome
Cathedral originally built as Bishop Alberts Cathedral in 1211.
Since then it has been rebuilt several times. Today it exhibits
a mixture of late Romanesque, early Gothic and Baroque
architectural styles. The cathedral is famous for its organ
which is often used in concerts and recitals. Opposite the
cathedral is the splendid Riga Bourse Art Museum built in
the form of a Venetian renaissance palazzo. The permanent
exhibition features Western European paintings from the

5. Three Brothers This is a charming group of
residential houses each from a different century, the oldest
dates back to the 15th century. In medieval times, Maz Pils
iela was located in a suburban area of Riga populated by
craftsmen. One of them now houses the Latvian Museum of

6. Powder Tower / War Museum One of Rigas
fortification towers was originally called the Sand Tower
and dates back to 1330. Rebuilt numerous times, it acquired
its current name in the 17th century when the city began
to store gunpowder in the tower. The War Museum was
created here in 1919 and its exhibits cover themes from both
medieval and recent military history. It houses a collection of
weaponry, photographs, documents, awards, uniforms and

7. National Opera House. The pride of Latvian musical
and cultural life was constructed in 1863 as the German
Theatre. In 1995, a full restoration was completed. The
opera has excellent acoustics and houses world class opera,

8. Freedom Monument. The symbol of Latvian
independence is one of Rigas major landmarks. Standing on
the citys main street - Brvbas Street - it can be seen from

impressive historical buildings within the Riga avenue circle
houses the richest collection of national art in Latvia. Here,

planetarium and a restaurant during the Soviet period,
the building has returned to serving as a church and holds

11. Art Nouveau. One third of Rigas city centre is built in
this style, making it the foremost Art Nouveau destination 18

13. Speri Quarter. The 19th century warehouse quarter

groups. Located between the Central Market and the shores

Riga Coach Terminal is right next to the Central
Market. From here, buses depart to destinations
all over Latvia and Europe. The level of comfort
and prices depend on the operator. Some
routes are served by minibuses and express
buses. Buy tickets at the ticket desks or vending
machines inside the terminal as well as on
board for cash if seats are available. Buses
departing from Riga on Fridays and Saturdays
tend to be very full. For the convenience of
visitors, there is an information centre located
in the main terminal building.
Train
The railway is the most reliable and cheapest
mode of transportation in Latvia. Trains tend
to be full during the morning and evening
rush hours on the most popular routes. Buy
tickets at the station ticket desks or from the
conductor on the train for cash at an additional
cost. Bicycles are allowed on board, but bicycles
of more than 2 metres in length require a
luggage ticket. There is an information desk at
Riga Central Railway Station.
