Abstract As a relative and dynamic conceptauthenticity has been a focus in the language assessment field in the
last three decades The paper intends to give a brief review of Bachman's research and development of authenticity
and aims to equip language assessment researchers with a better understanding of its essenceanticipating more multi-
dimensionally empirical studies of authenticity to be conducted in language assessment practice so as to update assess-
ment fairness
