ETNOMANIE - Ellie Uyttenbroek

Pb 17x24cm 160pp 100col ills 19.95

'Etnomanie' is a tribal style bible. Fashion stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek (known from Exactitudes)
made a personal selection from the ethnographic photo collection of the Nederlands
Fotomuseum. Using her eye for fashion, she selected 100 posed portraits, from the 1850s to
recent ones, focusing on individual expression, silhouette, pose, outfit, styling, body adornment,
accessories, and other fashionable details. The starting point was style, which is popularly
understood to mean something like attitude, approach, habitus, bearing, modus, manner, and
taste. In addition to historical information, Uyttenbroek reports her stylistic observations, making
the viewer aware of the beauty and autonomous visual power of the different portraits.

Paul Kranzler - Kylie Britney Christina Pamela Pink + Magazine Syndicate 18

Fotohof 2017 ISBN 9783902993380 Acqn 27346
Pb 24x30cm 140pp 106ills 26col 44

KYLIE BRITNEY CHRISTINA PAMELA PINK is the new two-volume photo book project by Paul
Kranzler featuring youths and young adults as its main protagonists. Kranzlers photographs were
taken in Upper Austria, but also in Saxony, Brandenburg and Bavaria. With his signature image
vibrancy he once again seeks out young people as he sensitively accompanies them on their
search for identity in a world caught up in the tension between regional traditions and global
media patterns. The protagonists open up to the photographer, revealing undisguised and
intimate images. For the book in general and individual photographs in particular, Markus Binder,
the legendary drummer and lyricist of the Attwenger duo, contributed essays that evoke the
stories behind the images and give the book an added literary dimension that is just as striking.

Published for the first time in the enclosed magazine SYNDICATE18 are photographs that
Kranzler took from the mid-1990s to 2013 of his friends and himself, direct and unreflected in
terms of fi ne art photography. The concept underpinning this particular work is the re-
examination and evaluation of his archive. In the initial images Kranzler himself appears in the
form of self-portraits. This gives rise to the phenomenon of age equality between photographer
and subject. The title SYNDICATE 18 is derived from the name of rapper ICE-Ts record label
and stands for the average age of the persons portrayed and the period over which the
photographs were taken.

Matthias Klos panoramarand

Fotohof 2017 ISBN 9783902993397 Acqn 27488
Pb 17x23cm 292pp 111col ills 22.50

For his panoramarand project Matthias Klos walked along the entire city boundaries of Salzburg.
The route description for his itinerary was the Umschreibung der Stadtgrenze, i.e. the city limits
as set out in the city ordinance. Very much in the tradition of the flneur,

Matthias Klos followed this written yet imaginary line around Salzburg, keeping to public rights of
way the whole time. The idea for the project came from the well-known 19th century panoramic
painting of the city by Johann Michael Sattler. Projected with an idealised 360 perspective the
painting opens up views of the city and its outskirts from a central location on the Festungsberg
that was not publicly accessible at the time of painting. In his wanderings along the city limits the
artist combines the legislative order of the abstract boundary with the image that the city of
Salzburg likes to project of itself with localities situated along the boundary line.

Erwin Polanc - 8630 Mariazell

Fotohof 2017 ISBN 9783902993441 Acqn 27601
Pb 23x30cm 120pp 72col ills 31.95

After [the small rural community of] Neumarkt and [the old mining town of] Eisenerz, Erwin Polanc
has now trained his photographic lens on Mariazell. In doing so he has focused on yet another
remote inner-Austrian town, which is itself retrospective in its orientation and therefore
underscores the nature of photography as an image of remembrance; but unlike the two
aforementioned localities, Mariazell is also bound to the presence of the holy.
The town of Mariazell is a perfect illustration of how the circles out of which the centre defines
itself can be concealed. Of how loftily the centre towers above all else, and its axiality is broken
as it descends into the profane. Erwin Polanc has captured that stumble and the reactions of the
profane.

Sorry For Damage Done - Vincent Wittenberg & Wladimir Manshanden

Eriskay Connection 2017 ISBN 9789492051264 Acqn 27647
Pb 17x24cm 352pp 27.50

The starting point for this project was a massive database of pictures taken by cleaning
companies that were hired between 2005 and 2013 by the municipality of Eindhoven, a medium
sized Dutch city known for its industrial heritage and Philips factories. The cleaning companies
were commissioned to remove graffiti and stickers from municipal property in the public space. As
evidence for their work they took two photos on every job, one before cleaning and one after.
During the 6 years that this work had been done 50,000 photos were taken and stored. Vincent
Wittenberg and Wladimir Manshanden were able to seize this bizarre archive and quickly saw the
historical value of it.

Courts 02 By Ward Roberts

Editions Edizioni 2017 ISBN 9780646955421 Acqn 27431
Hb 21x26cm 60pp 41 col ills 46.50

Following the release of Courts 01 (2012), photographer Ward Roberts expands upon his
comprehensive body of work documenting various sporting courts in Hong Kong, Bermuda,
Hawaii, New York, and Melbourne. Basketball and tennis courts are just two of his most obvious
subjects, which can appear in a surprising number of manifestations, states of repair, colours,
and contexts. The courts are devoid of people, rendering them at once familiar and foreign. The
lifeless spaces lie dormant in a perpetual state of waiting, poised to fulfil their function at any
moment in an explosion of activity, yet ironically still missing a key element. With a foreword by
Jennifer Krasinski.

Lionel Wendt Ceylon

Fw 2017 ISBN 9789490119492 Acqn 27645
Hb 17x22cm 224pp col ills 33

Sri Lankan photographer Lionel Wendts (1900-1944) choice of subject was eclectic: from
sensual and homo-erotic portraits to tropical images of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and from
picturesque scenes to compositions for which he used modernistic stylistic devices and
experimental techniques. After his premature death in 1944 his negatives were destroyed, but his
prints resurfaced in the 1990s, and are now part of several international private and museums
collections. This year Wendts work will be exhibited at Documentary 14 in Athens, and a large
scale retrospective will take place in the summer of 2017 at Huis Marseille Museum for
Photography in Amsterdam.

Hb 23x26cm 96pp 51ills 40

When Mary Frey began photographing family, friends, and strangers in her immediate
environment in 1979, she was in a state of transition. Studies finished, first teaching assignment,
pregnant - responsibilities, duties, worries - and the need to look for meaning in everyday life.
After a childhood in the sense of an imminent nuclear catastrophe, in an America where lifestyle
magazines and television give directions how the "Brave New World" should look and function.
Mary Frey has made strange pictures. Technically perfect, between snapshot and enactment,
intimacy and distance. Charged banalities with children, adolescents and adults, middle class,
USA, 35 years ago.

Lynn Alleva Lilley - Tender Mint

Eriskay Connection 2017 ISBN 9789492051318 Acqn 27756
Pb 21x30cm 144pp col ills 33

In September 2011, Lynn Alleva Lilley (USA) moved with her husband and two children to
Amman, Jordan. Far away from her home and her father, who was ill at the time, she tries to
make a home for her family in the strange place. There she uses her photography to familiarise
this initially strange land. Over the course of three years she photographed the Jordanian people,
Syrian and Iraqi refugees, animals in private zoos or farms, bird migration, and landscapes.
Themes such as displacement, entrapment, and adaptation are strongly reflected in this book.

Arthur Mebius - Dear Sky / North Korean Aviation

Eriskay Connection 2017 ISBN 9789492051301 Acqn 27757
Hb 20x28cm 128pp 60ills 50col 38.95

Air Koryo is the state-owned national airline of North Korea. International sanctions and
environmental restrictions have reduced the airlines international destinations with only China
and Vladivostok remaining. The old Antonovs, Ilyushins and Tupolevs rarely fly abroad and
therefore seem superfluous. Nevertheless these aircraft and their crews are kept ready for
operation. Arthur Mebius monitors the routine operations by the crew which appears as a
rehearsed play of maintenance, controls, and procedures. A beautiful ground control dance of
which an image of dedication and pride arises.

Mashid Mohadjerin is an award-winning photojournalist and visual artist whose work has taken
her all over the world. Her photo essays focus primarily on identity issues and the human
condition, with subjects such as migration, minority groups, and the socially displaced. In this
book, she portrays the women who played an important role in the recent uprisings that began in
Tunisia, spread to Egypt, and then swept through other parts of the Middle East. Coming from
different ideological and social backgrounds, these women defy stereotypes. Collected images
(both historical and current) and articles that circulated on social media at the time offer visual
context for the portraits.

Thomas Nol - Peculiar Artifacts In Bosnia & Herzegovina

Art Paper Editions 2017 ISBN 9789490800642 Acqn 27687
Pb 17x24cm 176pp col ills 27.50

This book is the result of a four-year project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Thomas Nolf
stumbled upon the existence of pyramids, stone spheres, and other peculiar artefacts discovered
by Semir Osmanagi and his team. Osmanagi is best known for promoting the pseudo-
archaeological project of the Bosnian Pyramids. He claims that a cluster of natural hills in the
central part of the country are the worlds largest manmade ancient pyramids. Aiming to create an
alternative biography that could counteract post-war disillusion in the region, Nolf travelled to
various sites, took photographs, spoke to locals, and ultimately attempted to establish the
phenomena as a believable history.
