Local group defends CCTV scheme

Debacle
The CPLN, which has the
ultimate responsibility in rela-
tion to the matter, have ques-
tions to answer.
There had been talk of Ro-
nanstown Garda Station taking
responsibility for monitoring
the CCTV cameras but this
should have been done from the
start rather than a community
based monitoring system that
was never going to work. From
the start this project has been a
debacle.

intended to monitor the footage
at the outset of the scheme in
2007.
The system was installed
and it has been recording ever
since, he said. It was never in-
tended in the original project
that the footage would be mon-
itored.
I know the gardai have ac-
cessed the equipment on occa-
sions but I wouldnt be at liberty
to say when.
The aim of the scheme
was that if an incident occurred
in any of the areas that we cov-
ered, the local gardai could talk
to us and the Data Protection
officer in the county council
and they could actually get a
copy of the disc.
I am not saying that this
was the correct way to design
the project but when we took it
over there was no arrangement,
no funding and no talk whatso-
ever about monitoring.
He also pointed out that the
CPLN has now handed the
scheme over to South Dublin
County Council, which he said
was due to begin monitoring
the footage shortly.
We [CPLN] brought ongo-
ing monitoring into the debate,
Mr ONeill added. We have
worked with Ronanstown
Garda station and the local in-
spector there to get the moni-
toring up and running and
lately the county council has
agreed to take over the entire
scheme.
Live monitoring will only
work if the gardai are able to
have the resources to react to
what they see on the camera.
Mr ONeill said he did not
know if any charges had ever
been brought against any indi-
viduals as a consequence of ev-
idence gleaned from footage
captured on the CCTV cameras
since 2007.

He said that the CPLN did
incur further costs after 2007 re-
garding the operation of the
CCTV cameras but he was un-
able to specify the level of
spending involved.
Billy Coman, the Director
of Housing, Social and Com-
munity Development at South
Dublin County Council, said he
expected the council to be in a
position to commence monitor-
ing the CCTV cameras shortly.
There have been protracted
negotiations between CPLN,
the council and the gardai re-
garding a monitoring system
similar to that in operation at
Tallaght Garda Station and this

connection with evidence gath-
ered from CCTV footage at the
Neilstown Shopping Centre or
Collinstown Park.
The spokesman said that
finding out whether any indi-
viduals were ever charged or
cautioned on foot of CCTV
coverage would involve a dis-
proportionate use of Garda re-
sources.

DUBLINERS and tourists alike can expect to
experience a series of exciting events across the
Southside now that summer is here.
For those interested in all
things Shakespearean, the
Trinity College Dublin Shake-
speare Festival 2012 is run-
ning until June 16.
Over the course of the
event over 500 performers will
be taking part in a series of
outdoor performances based
on Shakespeares work.
The aim of the festival is to
bring to life the playwrights
historical creativity. One of
the events that will be featured
is a production known as In-
dian Tempest.
It has been hailed as an
exciting adaptation of Shake-
speares work but in a more
comedic manner. It will be
performed in the 700 seat out-
door theatre in the front
square of Trinity College.
Throughout the festival,

Most people in their lifetime
will experience low back
pain. It may be a fleeting
one off episode of stiffness
on waking up in the
morning, which then goes
away as mysteriously at it
came on. Back pain can
come on suddenly, possibly
from lifting an awkward
object, a car accident or fall.
This can lead to a severe form
of low back pain which can
lock up the whole spine and
render the sufferer immobile
and in great discomfort. With
time and appropriate care the
back gets better.
Long term back ache poses more
of a problem. Possibly leading
to long periods of pain, loss of
mobility and quality of life. You
may not be able to do normal
daily activities such as walking,
lifting a child or your favourite
sport. Long term pain sufferers
who take medication may over a
long period time experience
side effects which lead to ulcers,
constipation and general
lethargy.
So what can cause low
backache? In order to explain
some of the causes of backache
we need to understand a little
anatomy. The low back has five
bones or vertebrae which have a
flexible disc between them
Ligaments, joints and muscles
help support and balance the
low back and spine. Damage to
any of these structures will lead
to low back pain. So how do
bad posture, a physical job
that is demanding and being
stressed will slow down and
even prevent healing. This
would lead to more persistent
backache that may get worse.
Eating too much and being
overweight will strain the low
back. Not eating enough
healthy foods deprives the
body of vital ingredients
needed to repair damaged
structures. Doing too little
correct exercise will lead to
poor muscle tone and support
for the back which leaves it
prone to repeated injury and
continual irritation of the
injured areas. Smoking not
only reduces the amount of
healing oxygen needed for
repair but also stimulates
inflammation and pain. Poor
posture will also prevent low
backache. If the weight and
forces are not evenly and
correctly distributed along the
spine, then key areas of the
spine will be prone to injury
and irritation.
Bad posture can be as obvious
as the stooping old age
pensioner, but it is often quite
subtle. Age, genetics and
poor habit may be
responsible. The bones and
muscles ache after standing
or sitting as they try to keep
