MC-TRX introduction
Overview
The MC-TRX is radio module that integrates a transceiver and one Multi-Carrier Power
Amplifier (MCPA) to facilitate NodeB to receive and transmit multiple carrier signals
such as 2G GSM, 3G W-CDMA/HSPA +, and LTE on the same frequency band of 900 or
1800 MHZ. This helps the operators serve the GSM customers along with the LTE and
HSPA users on the same frequency band.
The MC-TRX module is a complete UMTS Radio Equipment designed to operate in
UMTS FDD band VIII-35 MHz. The MC-TRX manages functionalities between base
band Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and Radio Frequency (RF) air interface.
MC-TRX 900 within 9100 Multi-standard Base Stations works in GSM-W-CDMA MSR
(Multi-Standard Radio). This means one single MCTRX module is able to emit
W-CDMA and GSM at the same time.
MC-TRX 900 operates in a reduced bandwidth down to 4.2 MHz supporting carrier
spacing of 2.2 MHz between central UMTS frequency and central frequency of first GSM
carrier. This allows GSM 900 MHz interferes to be closer to the UMTS signal, making
better use of available spectrum. The uplink and downlink filter can be configured from
the WMS.
Additionally, MC-TRX 67-09 also operates in a reduced bandwidth down to 3.8 MHz
supporting a carrier spacing of 2.0 MHz between the central UMTS frequency (for
example, 912.0 MHz) and central frequency of the first GSM carrier (for example, 910.0
MHz). This helps the operators in offering 3G services and at the same time in protecting
the 2G and 3G services from interference. For optimal operation, WMS supports the
selection of a reduced 2.0 MHz filter, that is, 2.0 MHz reduced uplink and 2.0 MHz
reduced downlink filters.
Note: The 2.0 MHz filter is applicable in this release only for MC-TRX 3G in 2G
cabinet and MC-TRX 3G without 2G dependency (and not for MC-TRX 900 MSR).
The MC-TRX 900 is a single sector 900MHz radio module, including a:
900 MHz 2G/3G transceiver
2G/3G Multi-Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA)
3G CPRI
2G Modem
2G controller (SUMx/SUMa) with 2G interface
3G controller (d2u) with 3G interface
2G-OMC and WMS
MC-TRX 900MHz delivers up to 60W composite output power at antenna connector in
3G-only mode operation.

General BTS architecture with MC-TRX

Architecture overview
The MC-TRX with Antenna Network (AN) acts as a duplexer to divide the transmitted
and receiver RF signal. The antenna is connected to the AN to receive uplink signals and
transmit downlink signals. The MC-TRX is connected to other logical components with
the BTS equipment and each logical component has its own function to connected with
the MC-TRX.
The MC-TRX 2G or the AN is connected to the SUMx or SUMa control boards through
backhaul. The 2G MC-TRX is always controlled by the 2G-OMC to manage functions
such as software download, hardware reset and so on of the 2G system.
The MC-TRX 3G is connected to the optical ports of d2U (eCCM or xCCM) to support
STSR 2+2 configuration through CPRI and not directly to the AN because information
related to AN such as inventory, alarms, position, and so on cannot be managed by 3G
system.
MC-TRX can be operated in three different modes. Network operator can choose any of
these modes based on their requirement.
Following are the operational modes of MC-TRX:

3G MC-TRX in a 2G cabinet
Architecture overview
The 3G MC-TRX in a 2G cabinet is developed to defined radio MC-TRX and use
MC-TRX for 3G operation from 2G base station cabinet. This system could switch the
MC-TRX to work from 2G to 3G or from 3G to 2G depending on the network
requirement.
The 3G MC-TRX implementation in a 2G BTS cabinet is shown in figure 3G MC-TRX
implementation in a 2G BTS cabinet. The resources within the grey dotted lines work
together to behave as separate network of different technology (3G) using a common
radio and antenna network system. The resources are managed from their respective
OMC systems for network supervision and management to behave effectively as two
separate networks. The 2G system is controlled by the 2G-OMC and 3G system by the
WMS.

The d2U digital shelf (based on xCCMu/xCEMu boards), need to be added in the cabinet
for 3G mode operation of MC-TRX. In addition, a new optical link based connectivity
must be provisioned to establish new connection between d2U module and MC-TRX
using CPRI protocol.
Initialization strategy in this mode is based on separate resets of MC-TRX(s) and d2U
module. An MC-TRX module is primarily controlled by SUMx/SUMa (master
controller). During initialization, the MC-TRX finds its mode of operation from

SUMx/SUMa radio controller and restarts in 2G or 3G mode configured by
SUMx/SUMa. The d2U shelf then performs the mediation of message sequence from
MC-TRX to WMS.
Note: Once the 3G mode is configured, 2G operator cannot manage MC-TRX from
2G-OMC unless MC-TRX is re-transitioned to the 2G mode of operation.
Functional overview
Following are the functions managed by 3G MC-TRX:
The OAM functions such as configuration management (CM), fault management
(FM), performance management (PM), software management (SW), and inventory
management (IM) are managed by the WMS.
The OSF lock and unlock operations of a 3G MC-TRX is performed using 2G-OMC.
All MC-TRX module are fully managed by WMS for all module and 3G functions,
including software download. A hardware reset cannot be done from 3G OAM.

MC-TRX 2G/3G MSR

Architecture overview
The 2G/3G MSR mode is used to support two technologies GSM and W-CDMA operated
on one same MC-TRX 900Mhz module on a site previously dedicated to GSM operation,
without or limited on-site intervention.
The architecture of MC-TRX 2G/3G MSR or multi-mode is similar to the architecture of
MC-TRX 3G in 2G cabinet except that instead of having separate MC-TRXs for 2G and
3G, the MSR has both 2G and 3G integrated within the same board, hence supporting
both GSM and W-CDMA. This means one single MC-TRX module is able to emit
W-CDMA and GSM at the same time.
All MC-TRXs 2G/3G MSR mode are physically connected to both the SUMx or SUMa
(through backplane) and to the CCM (through CPRI).
The diagram shows the BTS architecture with MC-TRX 2G/3G MSR. OMC and WMS
are used to control the MC-TRX on 2G and 3G mode respectively.

Figure 2-2 BTS architecture with MC-TRX - 2G/3G MSR

The d2U 3G with the MC-TRX equipments partially or fully operating in 3G is seen as a
3G BTS by the WMS operator. The d2U 3G is fully managed by WMS for all 3G
functions with existing protocols and mechanisms between a 3G NodeB and WMS.
The MC-TRX CPRI link is activated and declared in 3G MIB for MC-TRX to be fully
managed by 3G system.

The 2G-OMC with the MC-TRX equipments partially or fully operating in 2G is seen as
part of the 2G BTS by the 2G-OMC operator. The BTS 2G is fully managed by 2G-OMC
for all 2G functions with existing protocols and mechanisms between a BTS 2G and
2G-OMC.
The MC-TRX CPRI link is not activated, the MC-TRX is a complete 2G module, and it
will be completely managed by 2G-OMC for all 2G functions.
Common assets are supervised through both the 2G-OMC and the WMS, but can only be
controlled through the 2G-OMC.
The software of an MSR MC-TRX is an image built with 2G and 3G specific and
common features, which is always downloaded as a whole through the SUMa/SUMx
controller.
Once the cabinet is activated (Power ON), the MC-TRX tries to connect to a
SUMa/SUMx controller and loads the operational software over this interface. The
MC-TRX then gets activated in 2G or in 2G/3G MSR mode, depending on the SUM
configuration done by the 2G operator.
Note: In MSR, even if there is only one PA (MCPA), the specific 2G and the
respective 3G configuration is loaded separately from the SUM controller into the
d2U shelf. The 2G and common part are configured first and then the 3G part is
configured through the CPRI connection when it is active.
Functional overview
The 2G BTS is fully managed by OMC-2G for all 2G functions such as Configuration
Management (CM), Fault Management (FM), Performance Management (PM),
Software Management (SW), and Inventory Management (IM) with existing protocols
and mechanisms between a BTS and OMC-R.
All 3G functions, except reset and software download of an MC-TRX MSR
(including 2G and 3G software), are managed by WMS.
All the MC-TRX are fully managed by OMC-2G for all functions at module level and
2G functions.
The AN and cabinet through SUM is additionally managed by OMC-2G.

3G-only MC-TRX without 2G dependency

Architecture overview
The MC-TRX supports 3G-only can support up to three carriers per MC-TRX without
any dependency on 2G-OMC or 2G BSC. The term 3G cabinet means a cabinet
operating in 3G mode. The hardware type of such cabinets is the same as the one applied
for the 3G in 2G cabinet mode.
When MC-TRX functions in 3G mode, it is controlled by d2U that is located in the
cabinet through CPRI protocol. The OMC-B connected to the NodeB detects the addition
of MC-TRX (in the 3G state) and the d2U downloads the 3G software on the MC-TRX.
The 3G management is performed through the d2U controller. Node B environmental
hardware control such as antennae, fan, and so on are performed by the SUMx controller,
which ensures enclosure backplane connectivity.
Note: Please note that SUMa is not supported.
The diagram shows the BTS architecture with MC-TRX 3G-only without 2G dependency.
Only WMS is used to control the MC-TRX.

The d2U CCM equipment in the BTS shelf is connected through the CPRI link to the
MC-TRX boards. Existing MC-TRX boards still remains connected through the IOM link
to the SUMx, and an added MC-TRX board can also be connected to the SUMx, if
required.
2G side commissioning is done using the NEM terminal, which is either connected to the
SUM or to the MC-TRXs.
Antenna and SUMx software are loaded by the d2U to the MC-TRX as a single package
together with the MC-TRX software.
2G commissioning has the following sequence:
Load of the SUM software indicating if 2G or 3G is managed by the SUM.
The SUM is started with the new software being set in non 2G managed mode (the
default being 2G managed mode).
The NEM performs then MC-TRX software load for every MC-TRX configure in the
cabinet.
The NEM downloads 3G only compatible software for all the MC-TRX configure in
the cabinet uploading both inactive software part and the origin software.
Note: The operational software to update SUM and AN is downloaded only during
regular software upgrade done after the request from the d2U.
The MC-TRX then connects to the d2U as primary controller is set to interface with
the 3G side.
3G side commissioning is performed using the TIL terminal. The commissioning on 3G
side configures d2U in 3G and OAM, but cabinet hardware control and configuration
settings are not configured. This is a restriction in UA08.1

Functional overview
WMS handles all the modules such as configuration management (CM), fault
management (FM), performance management (PM), software management (SW), and
inventory management (IM), including reset and download of MC-TRX 3G-only mode
module.

Remote support of MC-TRX

Overview
Remote support of MC-TRX is implemented to support MC-TRX module in legacy 2G
cabinets to support 3G. The legacy 2G cabinets are renovated with three dedicated remote
MC-TRXs and this implementation also benefits the operator to deploy NodeB
configurations relying on two separate NodeB, but managing one single logical NodeB;
the configuration being correctly supervised at the OAM. The MC-TRX can operate in
3G mode or three MC-TRXs operating in MSR mode.
In the current version (UA08.1), the supervision of remote MC-TRX managed by digital
modules are hosted in either 9311 Macro NodeB, or in 9100 MBS Ev2 cabinets.
Previously, in UA7.1 the Remote MC-TRX were displayed in place of TRDU slots, while
in the current version the MC-TRX are in a floating mode and are out of the Digital Node
Bs.
Note: Remote MC-TRX configuration requires a 2G configuration in the cabinet
hosting the MC-TRX (with an Abis link).

Figure 2-4 Remote support of MC-TRX

The three remote MC-TRXs are connected in star configuration resulting in, three
different optical CPRI links deployed between the 2 cabinets. To configure remote
MC-TRX through WMS, see Alcatel-Lucent 9353 Wireless Management System - User
Guide, NN-20500-032.

MC-TRX 2G/3G MSR to 3G migration

Before you begin
Ensure the following on an existing hardware:
Connections to 2G control and supervision equipments must be disconnected before
connecting 3G equipments.
All 3G dedicated resources and assets are controlled and supervised using WMS
connected through the CCM board of the 3G d2U.
Common assets are supervised through both the 2G OMC and the WMS, but can only
be controlled through the 2G OMC.
MC-TRX equipments and antennae can be added or removed according to
requirements (Maximum of 3 MC-TRX and 3 antenna networks can be used).
MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMX controller and operational
software is loaded over this interface once the hardware is ready and operational.
Note: Once the MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMx controller, check if
the MC-TRX is in 3G only mode. This depends on the SUM configuration done by
the 3G operator.
Ensure the following on a newly installed hardware:
d2U is inserted into an empty sub-rack of a 2G rack sharing power and cooling
facilities and ensures connectivity to the MC-TRX for 3G mode operation.
The d2U CCM is connected to the WMS (through Itf-B over IP), the MC-TRX
(through the CPRI), and to the RNC (through Iub).
MC-TRX boards are connected to the d2U through the CPRI protocol.
BTS equipment alarms (except MC-TRX and external ones) are collected through the
SUMx board, operating in a specific 3G subcontractor mode.
MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMx controller and operational software
is loaded over this interface once the hardware is ready and operational.

Configuring BTSEquipment for 2G/3G MSR

Purpose
This procedure describes the WPS procedures to configure the BTSEquipment for 2G/3G
MSR mode operation.

Before you begin

Ensure that:
The WPS is installed and available.
The latest snapshot of the network must be available. For information on how to
import snapshot, see Alcatel-Lucent 9952 Wireless Provisioning System - User guide,

MC-TRX 2G to 2G/3G MSR migration

Before you begin
Ensure the following on an existing hardware:
The 2G OMC is able to control the MC-TRX equipments, partially or fully operating
in 2G as part of the 2G BTS.
All 3G dedicated resources and assets are controlled and supervised using WMS
connected through the CCM board of the 3G d2U.
Common assets are supervised through both the 2G OMC and the WMS, but can only
be controlled through the 2G OMC.
MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMx controller and operational software
is loaded over this interface.
Note: Once the MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMx controller, check if
the MC-TRX is in 2G/3G MSR mode. This depends on the SUM configuration done
by the 2G operator.
The 2G and common part is configured first, then the 3G part is configured through
the CPRI connection when it is active.
Ensure the following on a newly created hardware:
d2U is inserted into an empty sub-rack of a 2G rack sharing power and cooling
facilities and ensures connectivity to the MC-TRX for 2G/3G MSR operation.
The d2U CCM is connected to the WMS (through Itf-B over IP ), the MC-TRX
(through the CPRI), and to the RNC (through Iub).
MC-TRX boards are connected to the d2U through the CPRI protocol.
BTS 2G is connected to OAM 2G.
The MC-TRX in MSR configuration is installed and commissioned always using the
2G installation, commissioning tools, and methods because it is always connected to a
2G/3G cabinet with a 2G/3G radio equipment.
MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMx controller and operational software
is loaded over this interface once the hardware is ready and operational.

Overview
The integrated 3G-only MC-TRX can be configured as described.

3G-only MC-TRX without 2G dependency

The deployment of the integrated 3G-only is to support of MC-TRX 3G mono-mode in an
MBS cabinet (without any dependency to 2G OMC or 2G BSC). SUMx is still required
for control of AN and fans.
The two MC-TRXs are put in one sector and connect to the same Antenna network. Each
of the MC-TRX support two W-CDMA carriers.

Figure 6-1 3G-only MC-TRX without 2G dependency

This configuration allows the RAN sharing function that provides the ability to operate
four carriers anywhere in the 35 MHz of the UMTS 900 band and the 2G capability.

Integrated 3G-Only activation

Before you begin
Ensure the following on an existing hardware:
Connections to 2G control and supervision equipments must be disconnected before
connecting 3G equipments.
The 3G OMC or WMS is able to control the 3G d2U and the MC-TRX equipments
partially or fully operating in 3G only mode.
MC-TRX equipments and antennae can be added or removed according to
requirements.
Up to three sectors and up to six MCTRX can be used in 3G-only mode.
MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMX controller and operational
software is loaded over this interface.
Note: Once the MC-TRX software is connected to a SUMa/SUMx controller, check if
the MC-TRX is in 3G-only mode. This depends on the SUM configuration done by
the 3G operator.
Ensure the following on a newly installed hardware:
The d2U is inserted into a 3G equipment sharing power and cooling facilities and
ensures connectivity to the MC-TRX for 3G only operation mode.
