U.S. Officials underscore
Russia threat to elections
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON U.S. officials sought Wednesday to

underscore for lawmakers the threat Russia posed to the
2016 vote for the White House, outlining efforts to hack
into election systems in 21 states and to fill the internet
with misinformation during a divisive campaign season.
Officials also revealed what appeared to be a breakdown in
communications about how severe the threat appeared, and
they reported tensions the Obama administration faced in
trying to publicly warn of meddling in the face of a skepti-
cal then-candidate Donald Trump.
One of the candidates, as youll recall, was predicting
that the election was going to be rigged in some way. And
so we were concerned that, by making the statement, we
might in and of itself be challenging the integrity of the
of the election process itself, Jeh Johnson, the former
head of the Homeland Security Department, told members of
the House intelligence committee.
The testimony came during a morning of double-barreled
intelligence committee hearings one in the House and
one in the Senate that underscored the U.S. intelligence
communitys months-old determination that Russia
attempted to meddle in the election. The issue has become a

The NCAA said male and female athletes continue to set
participation records each year. From 2002-2016, male ath-
letes gained some 65,000 participation opportunities and
female athletes almost 58,000. Men still make up 56.5 per-
cent of all college athletes across all three divisions.
Since 1982, the year the NCAA began sponsoring
womens championship sports, participation by women in
athletics has gone from just under 30 percent in Division 1
to 46.7 percent in 2016. The NCAA also said female ath-
letes across all NCAA divisions are more racially and ethni-
cally diverse than they were in 2000-01.

Schools with an FBS program spend 44 percent of their
budget on mens teams compared with just 18 percent for
womens teams. The report also found that FBS schools
spend 75 percent of their coaching compensation budgets
on men and 70 percent on recruiting dollars on mens teams.
Though the disparity is smaller in FCS 41 percent spend-
ing on mens teams to 26 percent on womens teams its
clear that football has a major impact on spending equality.
Division I schools that dont sponsor football spend
almost equal amounts, with men getting 35 percent of the
budget and women 32 percent.

Tools to make the perfect slice of toast

By Kim Cook
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Toast is one of lifes great comfort foods.

Any amateur can make it: Put bread in toasting device, push
button, wait, remove and slather with something.
But its also trendy: In recent years, toast has found a cozy
spot among and under food trends like avocado, small-batch
jam, artisanal cheese and free-range proteins of various
types.
Toast is popular now because its a versatile concept,
says Jill Donenfeld, author of Better on Toast: Happiness
on a Slice of Bread 70 Irresistible Recipes (William
Morrow Cookbooks, March 2015).
Its pretty. Its single serve. And its portable. Bread is
just not something most people dislike.
Luckily, the toaster has evolved, too.
While toaster ovens are popular for thick slices and for
toppings, slot toasters in their modern iterations have lots
of snazzy features. Countertop space and personal prefer-
ences may drive your decision.
Some style-savvy options:
Williams-Sonoma has Brevilles sleek toaster, in silver or
cranberry red, with presets for multiple slices and levels of
browning. The appliance is also a capacious countertop oven
with convection baking. The companys Signature 4-slice
toaster is equipped with self-centering guides and 7 browning
settings. (www.williams-sonoma.com)
Smegs snazzy 50s-style slot toaster comes in retro hues
like fire-engine red, and pastel pink, blue or cream.
Dualits Architect 4-slice model lets you toast up both
thick and thin slices at the same time. Settings include Kitchenaids Pro Line 2- and 4-slice toaster comes in apple red, black, medallion silver and frosted pearl.
defrost, and an option to toast just one side of your bread.
Cuisinarts Compact 2-slice stainless toaster, with a handy
defrost-then-toast feature and roomy toasting slots, would fit
nicely on a tiny kitchen counter. (www.cuisinart.com)
At the high end of the market, Kitchenaids Pro Line 4-slice
toaster comes in apple red, black, medallion silver and frost-
ed pearl. LED lights above the settings allow you to operate
the appliance in low light. A thoughtful A Little Longer
button lets you give your bread an extra tweak of toastiness
if necessary. And an automatic Keep Warm function continues
to keep your toast cozy for an extra three minutes, in case
someones late to the table. (www.kitchenaid.com)
Donenfelds an old-school pan toaster; the technique
makes for a uniformly buttery, crispy slice, she says.
Greg Lofts, deputy food editor at Martha Stewart Living,
has his own twist on the pan toast: I prefer to toast bread in
a dry, cast-iron skillet. This method yields a crispy, golden
exterior and soft, chewy interior basically everything I
want a piece of toast to be.
His pro tip: I slice bread when its fresh and keep it in the
freezer, so I can easily toast one slice at a time and enjoy it
throughout the week. No more stale bread!
Whether you use a high-tech appliance or a stick over an
open flame, its hard to argue with toasts simple charm. As
Donenfeld writes in her book, Food tastes better when its
eaten on a piece of hot, crispy bread. Theres something pri-
mal about it.

DEAR DOROTHY,
After all these years, its still absolutely
true . . .
Theres no place like home. Since Im
very senior myself, Ive invested a lot of
energy collecting and testing walk-in
tubs. Now Im trying, with little success, to get rid of most of them.
WHY? Having designed some with so many improvements nobody
wants anything else in spite of their clearance prices, and I understand
perfectly why thats the case. After all, Its the last tub theyre ever
going to buy. What with 400 tubs, including 25 walk-in tubs on display,
its absolutely true Theres no place, no bathroom showroom, quite
