Overview of Seismic Design Strategies

Mitigation

1st Bridge Engineering Workshop, October 6 and 7, 2016 UNAM, FES Acatln, Mexico City
Mitigation Seismic Isolation

Seismic isolation increases the natural period of the structure:

acceleration and horizontal loads are consequently decreased
1st Bridge Engineering Workshop, October 6 and 7, 2016 UNAM, FES Acatln, Mexico City
Description of the Devices

Seismic isolation devices

An isolation system should be able to fulfill the following four main functions:

1). Transmission of vertical loads (non seismic loads)

Full load bearing capacity at any displacement stage. No bucking
stability limits.

2). Lateral / horizontal flexibility

High initial stiffness dues to frictional resistance and low
stiffness controlled by curvature

3). Energy dissipation

High energy dissipation capacity provided by friction or the use of
lead core

4). Re-centering capability

Full re-centering capacity due to the curved surface and the
weight of the structure, or by the use of high quality natural rubber.

Any seismic isolator should be able to fulfill the four main functions at
any time and during service and seismic conditions

Conclusions

Big positive picture of todays civil

engineering world.

Technologies that used to be exclusive

to developed countries are now
available and affordable for developing
countries, in particular in the Latin
American context.

As civil engineers, we can be proud of

this transformation.

Mexico and Latin America are now starting to apply more and
more advanced seismic protection technologies
