We are shaped and fashioned by what we love- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The

novels Memories of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and

Pride and Predigest by Jane Austen all have betrayal in common. The characters in these novels

experienced disloyalty in family and friendship, People are not always who they appear to be,

and that they must find courage to deal with the conflicts or obstacles.

Family and friendships are tough and not everyone is loyal. In the novel Memories of a

Geisha establishes disloyalty because Chiyo was betrayed by Mr. Tanaka, a man who she

thought was kind and her friend. The author explains how Chiyo felt," I couldn't stop thinking

about Mr. Tanaka. He had taken me away from my mother and father, sold me into slavery, sold

my sister into something even worse. I had taken him as a kind man. I thought he was so refined,

so worldly. What a stupid child I had been" (Golden 82). She was also betrayed by her own

father because Chiyos dad gave her and her sister Satsu away because he couldnt take care of

them and needed money to buy medicine for his sick wife. In The Great Gatsby Daisy and Tom

are married, but they both cheated on one another. In the novel Pride and Predigest Elizabeth

refused to marry Mr. Collins, so he later proposed to Elizabeths best friend Charlotte and she

accepted his marriage proposal. Loyalty is very important to the success, and stability of any

lasting relationship.

People arent always who they appear to be. Many of us judge each other by the way we

look rather that our personalities. In the novel Memories of a Geisha the author portrays

Hatsumomo as Mothers favourite, but Mother has been wanting to get rid of Hatsumomo for a

long time. Hatsumomo is a very beautiful geisha, but she is cruel. breaks the final straw and

Mother kicks her out. "She didn't leave voluntarily; Mother had thrown her out. And in fact,

Mameha believed Mother had been trying to get rid of Hatsumomo for years." (Golden 331). In
The Great Gatsby Daisy seemed to be kind, sweet, and always truthful. But she cheated on her

husband with Gatsby and even had a secret child that she hid from them both. She hid her

daughter for many years hoping nobody would find out. In the novel Pride and Predigest

Elizabeths best friend charlottes marries her ex Mr. Collins. Charlotte doesnt even consider her

friends feelings and does whatever she pleases, even if it hurts her best friend. It is always best

to get to know someone before judging them.

Throughout the novels the characters showed how they found courage to deal with the

obstacles in their lives. Chiyo became a maid, so that she could have opportunity to build herself

up. It was her choice to take advantage of the situation and become more successful and can earn

her freedom. Obstacles got in her way, but she said to herself, "Wish my eyes squeezed tightly

shut and my hands together, I prayed they permit me to become a geisha somehow. I would

suffer through my training, bear up under my hardship, for a chance to attract the notice of a man

like the chairman again, (Golden 114). Sayuri (Chiyos geisha name) was distressed to become

the greatest that she could be. In The Great Gatsby after Nick finds out Daisy killed Myrtle, his

lover he ends up leaving town. In the novel Pride and Predigest Elizabeth continues to do her

own thing and forgets about Mr. Collin and Charlotte and ends up marrying Mr. Darcy, the man

she loves. Trying to make good out of a bad situation is always the hardest, but it is always the

best thing to do.

In conclusion, the novels Memories of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, The Great Gatsby by

F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Pride and Predigest by Jane Austen all have betrayal in common. The

characters in these novels experienced disloyalty in friendship and family, People are not always

who they appear to be, and that they must find courage to deal with the conflicts or obstacles.
