Tolkien Paper on Galadriel

Before the beginning of the First Age, Galadriel emerged first as an eager participant in the

Noldor rebellion and the flight from Valinor. The Noldor, led by Fanor, demanded that the Teleri, or

sea-elves, to allow them use of their ships. When the Teleri refused, the Noldor took the ships by force,

which started the first of three wars also called the Kinslayings. Later it was pronounced that the Noldor

shall be doomed as a result of the Kinslaying and rebellion. Thus the Noldor utilized the Teleri ships to

flee from Valinor and make their way to Middle Earth. Though Galadriel herself was not involved in the

Kinslaying War, she was still categorized as one of the rebellious Noldor and was forced to flee as well.

These exiles were not only banished, but also prohibited from returning to the Undying Lands.

Galadriel is described as "the mightiest and fairest of all the Elves that remained in Middle-

earth" and the "greatest of elven women". She came from noble and royal blood being a grandchild of

both King Finw and King Olw, and was also close kin of King Ingw of the Vanyar through her

grandmother Indis. Galadriel was gifted with the skill of insight, she was able to peer into the minds of

others and judge their thoughts justly. Therefore, when Galadriel evaluated the mind of Fanor, she

found only darkness, thus her separation from the Noldor during the Kinslaying.

During the Second Age, the forging of the rings occurred. The loremaster Annatar (later revealed

as Sauron) was in charge of the creation of the rings, though his true motives were questioned by

Galadriels insight. Annatar taught the craft of ring-making to the Noldor elf Celebrimbor. Celebrimbor

was angry and opposing to Galadriels thoughts on Annatar and seized power himself in the land called

Eregion. As a result, Galadriel decided to leave through the Gates of Moria and make her way to Lrien.

When Annatar revealed himself as the Dark Lord Sauron, Celebrimbor entrusted unto Galadriel the

Elven Ring of Power, Nenya, also called the Ring of Water or the Ring of Adamant. In total there were
three elven rings: Nenya, Narya the Ring of Fire, and Vilya the Ring of Air which was the "mightiest of the

Three."

Galadriel then fled to Lorien and created for herself, other elves, and Cereborn (her husband)

and Celebran (her only child), a safe haven using Nenya. Galadriel had initially refused to use her ring

while Sauron was in possession of the One Ring, however after the One Ring disappeared, she decided

to use hers in the making of Lorien. While in Lorien, Galadriel maintained constant watchfulness against

Sauron and often struggled with him in thought. Sauron had a great desire to see into Galadriels mind,

but could not while the One Ring was out of his custody.

During the Third Age, Lothlorien was closed to outsiders and protected by Lady Galadriel and

Lord Cereborn. Finally, upon receiving the Fellowship of the Ring into Lothlorien, Frodo tested her by

offering to give her the One Ring. Galadriel knew that the One Ring would grant her great power, but

she resisted the proposal. As a result, Galadriel came to the reconciliation that upon the destruction of

the One Ring, her own ring would lose its power and her people would slowly diminish. However, it is

implied that the rejection of the One Ring was a test, a test that she passed. For a reward, Galadriel and

was granted permission to return from Middle Earth back into Valinor, which she was formerly

prohibited from doing after the Noldor Rebellion. So in the end of the Third Age, Galadriel returns with

the other Elves to the Undying Lands in order to escape mortality.
