Peace Corps Response positions are open to returned Volunteers or U.S. citizens with
significant professional and technical experience.

Project Description
A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is needed to serve as an Environmental Education
Resources Specialist for Azuero Earth Project (AEP)/Proyecto Ecolgico Azuero (PEA), in
Pedas, Los Santos, Panama. The Azuero Earth Projects Spider Monkey Education Initiative and
ProEcoKids education programs engage children in scientific and environmental learning
through sowing the seeds of ecological sustainability and environmental consciousness. We
aim to develop effective critical analysis and environmental consciousness among our
program participants. By increasing youth environmental consciousness, we indirectly increase
the environmental consciousness of their parents and larger communities on issues specifically
related to their immediate environment that connect to our larger organizational goal of
habitat restoration and reforestation on the Azuero peninsula. Both AEPs in-school education
program and ProEcoKids afterschool program seek to connect local children to local
conservation issues through environmental education based upon robust local scientific
findings and cutting edge education methodologies. However, after 5 years of running both
programs, we would like to ensure that we are staying true to these core goals by reassessing
how well our education programs incorporate best available local science and innovative
educational approaches. This project scopes new curriculum opportunities to incorporate
innovative science and educational approaches into AEPs education programs, and develops
didactic materials based on this research.

An Environmental Education Resources Specialist, with experience in environmental education

and fluent in Spanish, is needed to work closely with the AEPs Director and Education
Coordinator to develop new education materials for ProEcoKids and the Spider Monkey
Education Initiative based on best available local science and internationally-renowned
educational approaches. The PCRV will develop Azuero-specific environmental education
lesson plans and materials, develop appropriate metrics and activities to measure educational
program success, and develop schedule of in-school activities with local teachers, MEDUCA
and MiAmbiente representatives. The Volunteer will also implement curriculum in in-school
activities and ProEcoKids weekly afterschool program and revise/improve, evaluate the
success of activities through developed program metrics, and compile materials and make
them accessible to environmental educators at AEP and across the Azuero region. The overall
goal of this position is to build the capacity of AEP/PEA to achieve sustainable land use in the
Azuero Peninsula through community outreach and education.

Please note these are approximate departure dates and may change.
