Justification Paper

Over the lesson on ethical decision I have learned that there are different duties people

act under in different situations. There is the consequentialist, duty, and virtue framework.

Ethical conduct is defined by doing ones duties and doing the right thing, and the goal is

performing the correct action (Brown University 16). That is the correct definition, but I define it

as doing the correct thing in any giving situation. In all, my ethical rules will keep everyone

respectful, caring, and having manners.

My first rule is do no harm. This applies even if someone is challenging you. What I say

when I say that is to not cause any violence. Whether that is through words or through physical

actions. Both of these ways can cause people to be hurt or hurt themselves. This means you

have to take into account the fact that other people have feelings and they can be easily hurt.

Natural duties are universal. We owe them to persons as rational beings. They include the duty

to treat persons with respect, to do justice, to avoid cruelty, and so on (Sandel 3). This

connects to my rule because to do no harm means to respect and avoid hurting others. This

connects to my claim because if someone was to follow this rule they would be respectful and

caring as to who they are harming.

My second rule is be nice. This applies even if someone is being mean to you. This

means that even if someone is being rude or mean to you to hold your composure and remain

calm. Even if someone is being mean to you try to defeat them with kindness. It helps in

situations involving many people, some of whom may benefit from the action, while others may

not (Brown University 6). This means that it helps in situations to think of actions that are
unexpected of others. This connects to my claim because if someone was following it they

would be caring even if the other person is being cruel.

My third rule is to respect others does not mean hurt other people feelings. This means

that when respecting others you have to take into account their feelings. Although you respect

their opinions and ideas you have to respect their feelings. Consequently, it takes into account

all parts of human experience and their role in ethical deliberation, as it believe that all of ones

experiences, emotions, and thoughts can influence the development of ones character (Brown

University 36). This means that you have to respectfully put out your opinions and acknowledge

other peoples feelings. This connects to my claim because if someone was to follow my rules

this would cause people to be respectful.

My fourth rule is to give back to your community does not mean donate all your money.

This means to return a favor to your community by giving them a helping hand in something or

donating money to charity for good causes. Although you can donate money you dont have to

donate all your money for one specific reason. Though we must respect the dignity of all

persons (a natural duty), beyond this, we owe only what we agree to owe (Sandel 11). This

means that you only owe what you have agreed to. If you're giving back to your community and

only agreed to give a hundred dollars thats all you owe them. This connects to my claim

because if people were to follow my rule they would be caring and respectfully towards the

things that are happening in their community.

My fifth rule is to try to create peace does not mean be quiet and hold back. This means

that through the storm you have to always find that one thing that allows you to be peaceful with

yourself. Obviously, this framework is useful in situations that ask what sort of person one

should be (Brown University 34). This quote applies to my rule because in some situations a
person has to be should be able to speak up and talk about how they feel in a peaceful way.

This connects to my claim because this rule will allow people to be respectful to other peers.

My sixth rule is to be inspired even when youre surrounded by negative vibes. This

means when people are being negative that you continue to be positive and stay inspired. In

the Virtue framework, we try to identify the character traits (either positive or negative) that might

motivate us in a given situation (Brown University 30). This connects to my rule because it is

basically saying through the positive or negative they are still looking for ways you can stay

motivated or inspired. If people were to follow my rules they would able to get through the

negative parts of a person and use it to become inspired.

My seventh rule is to fight for your beliefs even if no one else believes. This means that if

youre the only person who believes in something that perfectly fine when someone

understands the mean more they will be able to believe in that very thing as well. This

framework also focuses on following moral rules or duty regardless of outcome, so it allows for

the possibility that one might have acted ethically, even if there is a bad result (Brown

University 20). This connects to my rule because when you fight for your beliefs you have to

take into account that you may get a bad result. If people were to follow my rules they would be

dreamchasers and if they had to reach for the sun they would take the risk.

My eighth rule is to be the helping hand even if it drains you. This mean that even on

your tired and most frustrating days to help others even if it take all of you. In the Duty

framework,we focus on the duties and obligations that we have in a given situation, and

consider what ethical obligations we have and what things we should never do (Brown

University 15). This quote applies to my rule because no matter what youre going through your

natural duty is to help others and avoid being cruel to others. If people were to follow my rule
they would be respectful of other people's feeling and keep in mind that they shouldnt take their

anger out on any.

My ninth rule is to have manners even if you are having a long day. This means you

should always use the according voice levels, talk clearly, leave your attitude at the door,

respect your elders and etc. In other words, what matter is doing the right thing because its

right, not for some ulterior motive (Sandel 13). This quote connects my rule because having

manners is basically about doing what's right because its right. If people were to follow this rule

they would be really respect no matter what.

My tenth rule is to be the influence for someone does not mean hold back and pretend to

be somebody else. This rule means that if you have someone that looks up to you dont mess it

up by trying to be someone youre not. Every nation has a duty to respect human rights, which

requires that it provided help, according to its ability, to human beings anywhere who are

suffering from famine, persecution, or displacement from their homes. This is a universal duty

that can be justified as a duty we owe as persons, as fellow human beings (Sandel 52). This

connects to my rule because by going through this, it influences people to do the right thing as a

human being. If people were to follow this rule they would be caring and influential to others.

I came up with these rules according to my peers and myself. I evaluated myself and my

peers and I came up with ten rules that me and my peers can live by. These rules will help

guide us throughout our daily lives and helps us to become successful. Over the course of

coming up with these rules I have to make revisions because some of my rules were similar, but

worded differently they are were relatively the same. So I had to change those so that they all

had different meanings. Revising these rules allowed me flow better on the different themes.
If I was to follow these rules I would be a very respectful, caring person with manners

who values herself and other people's feelings. If everyone listen to my rules there wouldnt be

any violence and everyone would be respectful to each other.
