1. INTRODUCCION
------------
-------------
INTRODUCTION
----
The bosic hydrologicol porometer for the selection ond evoluotion of poten
tiol hydropower plonts is the expected meon flow ot the project site, whether noturoHy
occuring or os ougmented by diversion. For the purpose of plonning ot the river bosi n
or notionol level this implies thot estimotes of the meon flow ore required ot points on
011 significont rivers ond their importont tributories. Given the ovoilobility of such es
timotes ond relevont topogrophic informotion, the theoreticol hydropower potentiol of
the region con then be colculoted.
,
The present volume contoins diogroms showing the schemotic representotion
of 011 river systems considered in the obove study together with summories of the topo
graphic ond hydrologicol chorocteristics of eoch river reoch ond tributory. Mops sho;
ing the geogrophic layout of eoch river bosin ore given in Volume IV together with th-e
locotions of 011 known streomflow ond roinfoll meosuring stotions. A full descri ption of
the methcx:lology underl ying the construction, operotion ond col ibrotion of the model s
is given in Volume 11, Section 4. The hydrologicol relotionships used ond the result
ing estimoted mean flows ot eoch defined point ore reproduced in Volume VII ond th;
corresponding theoreticol hydroelectric potentiols ore given in Volume VIII.

--------------------------
This interval was adopted as the standard river reach length within the pre
sent study, but was subject to modification in certain cases. Specifically, the inter
val was reduced for the final (most upstream) reach of a river or tributary stream and
when di catated by the location of a river confluence or hydrometric station. Converse
Iy, in regions wh~re maps with scales of only 1 : 1,000,000 were available, (mainly
in the Selva part of the <;;ountry having low gradients), river reaches of 50 Km. were
adopted. Due to the homogeneity of these regions, the resulting loss of accuracy is not
u ndu Iy signifi cant\.
Each point is defined by its distance, in Km., from the downstream con
fluence with a lower arder river and by its elevation, in meters above sea level. For-
each associated catchment, that is between the given point and that point Iying imme
diately upstream, planimetered values were obtained for the surface area in Km2, and
the mean elevation of that area in m.a .s.l. Confluence points are distinguished by
a system of double numeration, unique numbers being given to the coincident pointson
the upper and lower order streams. The location of a gauging station is defined by the
appropiate point number and by identifying the linear elements from which the meas
ured flow derives. These linea~ elements are in turn limited by confluence points and/
or gauging stations.
In the above manner a digital model of each river system was constructed
and this information forms the river system data bank. Due to computational limits of
the associated computer program it was necessaryto -di~aggregate some of the very large
stream networks existing in the Sierra and Selva regions of Peru however; by maintain
ng a strict sequential arder in running the models cumulative results can be transmitted:-
Calibration of the catchment models consisted of adiusting the input h".Alv
logical relationships and/or imposition of point inflows or outflows to account for un
measured gains or losses. Point inflows or outflows are used when abnormallylarge flow
increments are indicated by the model as occur, for example, with unmeasured diver
sions, consumptive use, free surface evaporation or infiltration. The majority of such
adjustments had to be made for the coastal river basins due to the large number of exist
ing irrigation schemes with their associated canal transfers.
-
The tables whi ch follow each diagram allow each river reach to be identi
fied by name and also give associated morphometric and hydrological information.
The river basin is identified by name and attributed code number , and each
separately considered reach defined by its limiting points in accordance with the flu
vial diagram. Physical characteristics given are the total catchment area (A) and co
rresponding mean elevation (H), and the total stream length (L). Catchment paramete~
are cal culated as follows :
Form factor = A / (L * L)
Drainage density = L/ A
The mean slope represents the difference between the mean el evation of the
catchment area and the river course it is calculated between each pair of points and
weighted to give a value for the river reach concerned.
The value for the mean rainfall is calculated on the basis of the input re
lationship assumed between precipitation and elevation.
