Level : Intermediate Level

Class/Semester : VIII/1

Subject : English

Topic : Idioms

Skill : Listening

Meeting :1

Time allocation : 1 X 15 minutes

1. Goal

Students will be able to identify lyric and idiom from a song and make some
idioms.

2. Objective

Students will be able to arrange the disconnected lyrics of a song and identify
the idioms while they are listening to the song.
Students will be able to recognize and explain the meaning of idioms in a
song.
Students will be able to make some idioms.
3. Material

Idiom

a. Definition:
Idiom is a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning that is
different from the meanings of each word on its own.

b. Example:
Ring a bell >>> something that sound familiar

For a song >>> buying or selling something at a very cheap price

She spelled the beanch >>> talk too much

English song of We are the champion from Queen

I've paid my dues, time after time

I've done my sentence but committed no crime

And bad mistakes, I've made a few

I've had my share of sand kicked in my face

But I've come through

And I need to go on and on and on and on

[Chorus]:

Method : Community Language Learning

Technique : Ask and answer question, discussion, and line by line

Approach : Communicative approach

5. Activities

Activities Description Duration

a. Teacher greets the students.


Pre-activity 3 minutes
b. Teacher brainstorms about idioms by
showing some idioms (with picture).

While-activity
a. Students listen to the song (with video).
b. Teacher distributes some pieces of lyrics and 9 minutes
tells the students to arrange the disconnected
lyrics while they are listening to the song.
c. Teacher plays the song.
d. After the students finish their assignment, the
teacher plays the song (with video and lyric)
for the third time and together with the
students compare the lyric with their previous
answer. For this phase, teacher will give a
reward for student who arranged the lyrics
correctly.
e. Then, teacher asks the students to identify
how many idioms contained in the song and to
explain the meaning of the idioms in the song.
The teacher will ask some questions:
1. How many idioms that you have got from
the song?
2. Could you mention some of the idioms,
please!
3. Could you tell us the meaning of the
idiom, please!

a. Teacher asks the students to make three

b. Teacher lets the students to listen to their
friends idiom. In this stage, teacher will give
a reward for the first student who finishes the
idioms.
