BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO RISK

FACTORS OVERVIEW IN DR. WAHIDIN SUDIROHUSODO


HOSPITAL MAKASSAR IN PERIOD JULY 2015 TO JUNE 2016
ABSTRACT

Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is defined as a disorder


that occurs in the inner ear with positional vertigo symptoms that occur repeatedly
with a typical nystagmus paroksimal. Benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV)
is generally accepted as the most frequent cause of recurrent vertigo. The prevalence
of the incidence of peripheral vertigo, BPPV in the United States about 64 out of
100,000 people with a tendency to occur in women (64%). BPPV is estimated often
occurs at an average age of 51-57 years and rarely at the age under 35 years old with
no history of head trauma. BPPV is a common vestibular disorder that leads to
significant morbidity, impact of psychosocial and medikal costs. Delay in diagnosis
and treatment are still frequent, resulting in high cost and lowers the quality of life of
patients with BPPV.
Objective: to obtain information about the patient's Benign Paroxysmal Positional
Vertigo Risk Factors Overview in Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital Makassar in
period July 2015 to June 2016.
Methods: This study is a retrospective descriptive study using secondary data register
of patients with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo.
Sample: all patients with a diagnosis of benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo who
seek treatment at Hospital Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar in period July 2015 to
June 2016 and with complete medikal registry according to the study criteria.
Results: Twenty nine patients with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo
hospitalized in July 2015 to June 2016 obtained from the registry who fulfill the
study criteria. The results of data analysis demonstrated that BPPV is commonly
found in patient above 55 years (11 patients/ 37,9%), female gender (18/62,1%),
normotension ( 11 patients/ 37,9%), patient with good-nutrition status (10
patients/52,6%), housewife (8 patients/ 27,6%), and patient who had medikal history
of Hypertension and without other medikal history ( 6 patients /27,3%).
Conclusion. Age over 55 years, female, normal blood pressure, good nutritional
status, occupation housewife and hypertension history and no history of another
disease is most often found in patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in
Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital Makassar period July 2015 to June 2016.
