Lately,Ivefoundasimilarprincipleappliestoimmigration.Nomatterwhattopicisbeingdiscussedonline,ifthe

USemigration,whichmaybethemoreinterestingdirectionsinceitisnotnearlyaswellknown.UnfortunatelytheUSdoes
notkeepgoodemigrationrecordsandthebestdataIvemanagedtofindgoesbackonlyafewdecades.So,Idont
foreseebeingabletomakeahistoricalUSemigrationmap.

Still,IthinkitsprettyinterestingtoseewhatUSnetimmigrationflowslooklikeinthepresent.

Asmentionedabove,accordingtotheseestimates,theUShassignificantpositivenetimmigrationwithonlyoneother
country,Australia.ThecountrywithwhichtheUShasthelargestnegativenetimmigrationis,perhaps
unsurprisingly,Mexico.ThoughtheamountbywhichMexicoleadsisdownsubstantiallycomparedtoadecadeago.
Illegalimmigrationinparticularhasfallenoffsharply,asdemonstratedbythistimeseriesofborderapprehensionsfrom

WhenUSimmigrationisviewedbyregion,theareathatreally
standsoutisAsia,whichnowaccountsforjustasmuchUS
immigrationasNorth+SouthAmerica(Mexicoincluded).

ImmigrationbetweentheUSandMexicoisparticularly
complex,sinceitinvolvesbothlegalandillegalimmigrationas
wellastemporarylaborers,deportations,andalargenumber

understandglobalflows.Onethingthatmustberemembered,however,isthattherearemanywaystodefinewhoisamigrant,
andstatswillvaryaccordingtothese.AsyoucitetheUNasasource,Iassumeyouusetheirdefinition,whichispeopleliving
outsidetheircountryofbirthforoverayear.Obviously,thiswouldexcludemanysojournersandmigrantworkers.Thisisnotmeant
asacritique,butmoretopointoutthatthisisnotthecompletepicture,andweshouldbearinmindthatmigrationisacomplexand

Thedataisfromeachcountry's2015populationcensus,allcollectedin2015,butdifferentdatesfordifferentcountries.In
theory,refugeesthatarrivedinacountrybeforeitscensusshouldbeincluded.Buteventhen,it'snotclearhowaccurate
thenumbersareforthosethathadjustarrived.

Shortanswer:Someareincluded,mostarenot.

Ithinkthereisaproblemwiththeformulausedtoestimatethemigrationflowsbetween2010and2015.Incertaincases,the
simpledifferencebetweenthemigrantstocksin2015and2010,simplyunderestimatestherealinflow/outflows.Forexample,in
thecaseofimmigrantsfromSyriatoRomania,in2010therewere7254SyriancitizensinRomania,whilein2015thenumber
dropsat2499.ThisismainlybecauseRomaniaisatransitcountryforimmigrants/refugeesfromCentralAsia,MiddleEastor

2010and2015.InthecaseofSyria,thatmigrationreflectsadropinthenumberofSyrianslivinginRomania(not
RomanianslivinginSyria).

Youarecorrectthattheformuladoesnotalwayscapturethetruephysicalmovementofpeople(migrantswholiveinone
foreigncountrymovingtoadifferentforeigncountry),andtherearetwogoodreasons.Oneisthatthedataisjustnot
available.Butevenifitwereavailable,I'mnotsureif(orhow)Iwouldhaveincludedithere.Forexample,ifthemapwere
toshowSyriansmovingfromRomaniatoGermany,howwouldthatbedistinguishablefromRomanianswhomovefrom
RomaniatoGermany?

Eitherway,thanksforthesmart,wellthoughtoutfeedback.AndalsoforthesuggestionabouttheIMFremittances.That

wouldbeinterestingifpathschoseleastdistanceonaroundmap,asitwouldbeeasierseemigrationpatternsoverthepacific,
