Advanced: Lets Talk
Kira: Hey! Ive been looking for you everywhere. I wanted to
ask you if you would like to go with me to the mall later on.
Wait a minute. Whats wrong, Britney? Why the long face?

Britney: Hello, Kira. Im feeling really discouraged at the moment, and I

just dont know what to do. Ive been looking for a job for over a month,
and I havent received a single offer. Its odd because I get plenty of interviews.

Kira: Thats awful! Im very surprised about this. However, on

a positive note, your CV must be good. Thats why youre getting
interviews. When was the last time you had an interview?

Britney: The last time I had a job interview was today. I got back a couple
of minutes ago. I really hope they call me back. Its just so frustrating! I always
feel very confident that I will get the job, but then I never hear from anyone.

Kira : You just got back a couple of minutes ago? That tells me that you probably
wore the same outfit to the job interview as you are wearing now. Youre wearing
a pair of old jeans and a tank top, which is fine for casual wear, but its not okay
for an interview. Thats probably why you havent managed to get a job.

Britney: Really? I didnt think it mattered. I mean, my CV is good, and

I have great communication skills. I bet you are right though. Wow! I
think you may have found the root of the problem. Thanks so much, Kira!

Advanced: Reading Comprehension

Finding work in todays job market can be challenging. Here are

some handy tips to help you with your job search.
Start handing in your CV physically. Get your face in front of
recruiters instead of relying on e-mails and phone calls. It will
make more of an impression.
Step up your job-search activity. In many ways, a job search
is a numbers game. Increase your odds by increasing your
activity.
Try to be as flexible as you can. Consider contract work, part-
time work, or starting out at a lower salary than you were hoping
for. It gets your foot in the door for other opportunities
later. Besides, less money is better than no money, right?
Consider relocating. Top jobs arent always where you are. You
have to go where the opportunities are.
Scour the hidden job market. Many jobs arent
advertised. Use your personal network of friends and family or
contact employers directly. They might appreciate your initiative.
