My Autobiography

My whole name is Cairo Enrique Rodriguez Prieto. I was born in Berkeley

California. I currently live in Richmond California. 6 years ago I lived in Florida for about 8

years. For fun I enjoy biking with friends and family. I also enjoy play videogames with my

friends. Most of the time I play Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Ive been in 3 CoD(Call of Duty)

teams. Ive won two UMGs. A UMG is CoD tournament. I go to RCHS or Realm Charter High

School. Im a 10th grader but Ive been going to this school since 6th grade. So yes Realm is also

a middle school.

A lot of random citizens might assume that Im a violent person because of how I

appear to them. And what I mean by the is that I wear earrings most of the time and a lot of

people might think that only thugs or gangsters wear earrings. And also I wear pretty

expensive clothes so they might assume that I steal money or other stuff and sell it to get money

to buy my clothes.

If a lot of people actually got to know me personally then they would get to know that

Im a very nice and polite guy. I also care about how I dress and appear to other people. And that

goes back to what I was saying before. That I wear kinda expensive clothes. Even if Im at home

alone alone I still care about what I look like to myself.

My personal attractions are cars, guns, paintballing, and motorcycles. Saying that makes

me seem like a very violent person. But Im really not. When I play paintball I only go hard if I

know the person or if I know that they can take the pain. If I dont know the person and I know

that they cant take the pain then I will go easy and only shot them from a distance so it wont

hurt as bad then if i shot them from close up.

How Chinua Achebe Made a Statement

In the novel Things Fall Apart a man named Okonkwo goes through some rough times.

He has one son Nwoye and a boy named Ikemefuna that he treats like his own son but really

Ikemefuna is just a sacrifice from another village. Throughout the novel Nwoye betrays him and

changes religions and Ikemefuna is killed. Okonkwo wanted to look like a man to his village so

he decided to do the killing to Ikemefuna. All of this causes Okonkwo to hang himself from a

tree. Chinua Achebe, wrote a fictional story with fictional characters and fictional places about a

real place in time around the late 1800s and early 1900s.

None of the characters in this novel were real people in this time zone. Okonkwo,

Nwoye, Ikemefuna, and all of the other characters were real living people. Chinua Achebe

created these characters to make the story seem more fictional. He didnt want to get fictional

characters stories mixed up with real peoples stories when this wasnt the past and this was

really happening. In real life there was no Okonkwo that killed his son and disowned another

then killed himself. But there really were people like that at that time. If he chose to make

characters none fictional then he wouldve had to write their story and not the one that he had in

mind.

In the novel places like Umuofia and Mbana werent real places. If Chinua Achebe had

chosen to put the real name of places then he wouldve had to say what happened in those places

or else that would be false history. There were real villages in Nigeria almost exactly like

Umuofia or Mbana but they werent those places. Chinua Achebe made up fictional places so he

could make his story original. Also so his story could be fictional instead of reality.

4
Nothing in the novel was true, it was all fictional. If Chinua Achebe wouldve put the

name of real people then he wouldnt be able to write his own stories. All of the stories would

have to have been their stories instead of the one he wanted to write. If he wouldve put the

names of real villages the he would have to have told the stories of the villages and what had

really happened in those villages. That's why Chinua Achebe had to put fake characters and

villages.

In conclusion, Chinua wrote a fictional story with fictional characters and fictional places

about a real place in time around late 1800s and early 1900s. In the novel none of the

characters rally existed. Also none of the places existed, even though there were real people and

places almost exactly like them he still made them up. He chose to make everything fake so he

could have a fictional story. And so that he would have been able to tell his own story instead of

what really happened back then.

My Life in a Poem

This is a poem
A poem about my family
Its also about me
So sit down relax
And let me speak
Hopefully this goes by fast
Just like these days
It feels like it was just yesterday when I moved to California
But no it was six years ago
Just because Im Latino
That doesn't mean I speak Spanish
Im mostly Brazilian
And a little but Colombian
My parents just got divorced 2 years ago
I didnt see it coming
But luckily there still close friends
Some people dont have the same luck as me
Some people never get to meet their parents
I have the luck to have parents that love me
And buy me stuff I want
But its definitely stuff I dont need
For example my parents got me an Xbox
I was the happiest guy alive
Just like my dog when he sees his owner get home
Ive never had a bad life
Ive always had a roof over my head
Everyone in my family is healthy and alive
Still no one dead
And all living well
But my mom thinks Im an addict when I never leave the chair
But sometimes it feels like the chair grabs me
And never wants to let me go

6
And my T.V.is like a magician
It can distract anyone at anytime
But sometimes that distraction can distract for too long
Now I have some self control
Control so I won't stay in my room all day
Now I can go outside and play
I still play a lot
But not as much as I used to
Now I have an idea
Of how I used to be with my games
I used to be like a bee to honey
Always attracted to it no matter what
Now I am like a dog to a ball
I play with it sometimes
But most of the time I don't
Most of the time it just sitting there
Collecting dust
I think I got better too

Childhood to Adulthood

Do you think your childhood has affected who you are today? In the book God Help the

Child by Toni Morrison there is a lady named Sofia Huxley, her mother wasnt like a mother at

all, she was never there for her. There were also a character named Bride, as a child her mother

hated her just because of her skin color. Sweetness even hated her so much she even tried to kill

Bride as a child. There is one last character named Booker, whose older brother Adam was

sexually murdered and there is no way that Booker will stay the same after that. According to the

novel everyones childhood changes who they are later on in life, but some people are known as

the ones with that bad childhood and others are known as the ones that made it past that bad

childhood.

When Sofia Huxley was a child her family was a very religious so she grew up without a

mother. The reason that she ended up in prison was false but if her mother was there for her

instead of doing religious things then she may not have had a sentence anymore. The crime that

she was framed for was sexual abuse, and they thought it was her because Sofia is a lady that

works as a kindergarten teacher.

There is another character in the book named Bride. When Bride was a child her skin

color was too dark for her mother's liking. Her mother Sweetness never liked Bride as a child,

Sweetness would be ashamed to go out in public with Bride. Sweetness even had a time when

Bride was still young that she tried to suffocate Bride with a pillow in her sleep. But later on in

the book Bride didnt think of herself as a women with challenges, she thought of herself as the

8
women that gets through those challenges. When Bride was an adult and didnt need her mother

anymore she got a job at Sylvia inc. which is a cosmetics company.

The last characters name is Booker, Booker is a teen boy and his brother Adam, was

sexually murdered. Being sexually murdered means that they were sexually assaulted and

murdered at almost the same time. Days after Adam was murdered Booker and his father both

say Adams body with parts off him missing because they were cut off. His mother couldve

seen his body too but she didnt want to see her little boy dead. After Booker saw his older

brother dead he immediately changes who he is because no one stays the same after they see

their older brother in that position. Booker will not be Booker anymore after that because that is

a traumatizing experience, and no one stays the same after seeing someone like that especially if

it was a close relative like a brother.

In conclusion all childhood experiences will change you as a person. It might change you

in a good way or in a terrible way. For characters like Bride it changed her in a good way, but for

other characters like Booker and Sofia it changed them in a bad way. Booker wont be the same

now that he has experienced his brothers murdered body but the only thing that is making him

happy at this point if Bride who is also his also his girlfriend and Sofia had a 25 years to life

prison sentence but she ended up getting out and getting a job after getting out. So for some

people having a bad childhood experience can make them a better or worse person when they get

to their adulthood.

Always Running Essay

What would you do if you had a kid who copied all the mistakes you made as a kid? In

the book Always Running by Luis Rodriguez that is exactly what happened and that was also the

reason the book was written. At the beginning of the book Luis Rodriguez says the book was

written to tell his son, Ramiro, to tell his story from when he was a teen. The book talks about his

history with gangs, drugs, police, and all sorts of illegal activities and how he found a different

path in life and became a writer. The message of the book was that no matter how bad you mess

up in life you can always turn around and find the right path. Who really was to blame for all of

Luis bad decisions, was it Luis or was it Luis parents?

Luis started his own gang, Thee Impersonations, with his friends for protection, I think he

is to the one to blame for this decision. Thee Impersonations the Thee being an old English

usage that other club would adopt because it made everything classier, nobler, badderpg. 41. I

chose this quote because this is when Luis introduced the name of his gang. Also it states how

Luis and his friends chose the name for their gang, and how Luis parents had nothing to do with

his gang and they did not even know anything about it. Luis starts a gang called Thee

Impersonations with his friends so Luis is to blame for his actions.

Luis is involved with other gangs not just his gang and he is involved in bad and friendly

ways. Look under your seat,Santos casually suggested. I looked down with my eyes, without

moving, and could see the edges of bottles and rags. Shit I thought, they wanted to fire bomb a

house. pg.118. In this scene Luis and other gang members are going to burn a house with

10
molotovs. Luis did not want to do it, but he knows he has to. This means Luis got himself into a

gang so now he has to act like a gang member. Luis is involved with other gangs and he had to

do stuff even though he did not want to, to prove that his gang is tougher than all the other gangs.

Luis had a lot of encounters with police. The white dudes pulled out guns. Then one of

them flashes a badge, Everyone line up. This is the Huntington Beach Police department.66.

Luis is at the beach with his friends when some white guys started trying to start something with

Luis and his friends. They did not know they were police until they went to go and fight them.

This shows how police had to be undercover to get Luis arrested. Luis was involved with police

when he would be around his friends.

In conclusion, Luis was the only person we can blame for the decisions he made. Luis

started a gang, Thee Impersonations, for protection. Luis gang and other gangs were not friends

so they would fight sometimes. Since Luis was involved with gangs he was also involved with

police. Luis parents were not to blame for Luis decisions, everyone is in control of their own

body so whatever you do wrong is your problem and no one else's.

Finding Your Sexuality

Have you ever had to question your sexuality to find your true self? In the book Chulito

by Charles Rice-Gonzalez the main character Chulito questioned his sexuality a lot. In the

beginning of the book Chulito is shown as straight but later on in the book he is exposed to

naked men and thinks about it a lot. Chulito has a gay friend named Carlos throughout the whole

book, they start as best friends but end up as boyfriends in the end. Chulito is a teen who finds

his sexuality throughout the book.

The beginning of the book starts with Chulito as a straight male who lives a gangster

styled lifestyle and does not question that at all. When his friend, Carlos comes out as gay

Chulito is surprised and wants to be a good friend and support him, but he knows if he does he

will lose the gangster title and people will think he is gay too. Chulitos other friends called the

fellas did not like gay people and they would all bully Carlos and his boyfriends for being gay.

At one point they even tell Chulito to throw a glass bottle at them, he tried throwing it at Carlos

boyfriend since Carlos is his friends and he did not wants to hit his friend. Later in the book

when Chulito has sex for the first time there is also a friends involved name Kamikaze.

Chulito loses his virginity it is with 2 people, a prostitutes and Kamikaze. Since there was

another guy, he was exposed to another penis. After they were done and were all cleaning up, all

he could think of was Kamikazes penis, this is when Chulito started to question his sexuality. At

first he tried to deny the fact that he might be gay because all of his friends do not like gay

13
people except for one of them. At this point Chulito is seriously questioning if he is gay or

straight.

In the beginning of the book Chulito and Carlos are only friends and nothing more than

that. They have a huge fight and completely stop talking, but they end up making up and being

just friends again and still nothing more. But shortly after this Chulito starts to think he is gay

and later on they start to fool around together. Still no one else knows about Chulito and Carlos

so when Chulito hears someone around them when they are kissing or doing anything, he quickly

gets away Carlos and acts how friends would act around eachother. Carlos forces Chulito to

make it an open relationship by saying they can not see eachother anymore if he tries to acts like

friends when someone is close.

In conclusion, Chulito ends up being gay and still lives a happy life because he thought

being openly gay would mean he would get beat up and bullies in the streets. The message of

this book to the readers is that if you question your sexual identity do not be scared to be open

about it. In the beginning of the book Chulito is straight but ends up being gay in the end of the

book. Chulitos friend Carlos starts off as his friend but ends up as his boyfriend. Being openly

gay is ok so do not hide it from anyone.

End of Year Reflection

I have grown a lot this year, as a reader, writer and thinker. I think I have grown more as

a reader because when I would read at the beginning of the year I would always ready really

slowly and I would stutter a lot. Now I can read a lot faster and I stutter way less than I used to.

Also as a writer I have learned to type faster, write much neater and also have much better

grammar now than I did at the beginning of the year. My favorite part of this class was when we

read Always Running, I can relate to that book very well because he lives in a ghetto area and

has a lot of friends that are gang related.

I have noticed that my essays at the beginning of the year were ok but now they are really

good. I used to not know how to write essays very well but now I am much better. Before I

would just write about the topic but now I know how to correctly format and write essays. Earlier

in the year I would write to make the essay look longer but now I write about important

information and good topics. I do wish that I liked to write essays to that writing them would not

be a struggle.

The topics I chose for my essays were either subjects that I can relate to or they were

subjects I know stuff about. For my essay on Things Fall Apart I wrote about Okonkwos life

story. That was a good topic to choose for me because I read the book to learn about his life

story. For my essay on Always Running I wrote about how I can relate to Luis life as a teenager.

I liked that topic because his story sounds a lot like the story of some of my friends and some of

the parts I can even relate to.

15
My essays say that I care about my grades and I read the books for class. The piece of

work that I am most proud of is my essay for Always Running because his story was a really

good story. His story sounds like he came from the same community I do so to hear how he got

better and now he is a writer inspires me a lot. Not a lot of people get out of that life to go to

education usually people with the same life style as Luis when he was a teen usually stay like

that or end up in jail. That s why my favorite piece is my essay on Always Running.

If I could go back and change something, I would change how much I cared about

reading the books. Last year you could get away with skipping most pages in the books we read.

This year you have to read the whole book to be able to write a good essay about the book. Some

advice I would give is to not slack around with work because the due date comes up much faster

than you think. Another tip for next years class is to not slack on reading the book.

16
How I grew

This is an essay about how I grew in the past couple years. Before last year I used to just

stay at home and not do anything after school or when there's no school on a

break. Another way I've changed is having 2 bolder sisters help me through life to

help me with the hard times or just being there when I need them the most. The

third way I've grown is physically 2 years ago I was 56 tall and now I'm 6 tall.

A personal transformation that I've had in life was when I used to stay home and not do

any exercise then I started to work out a lot at home and at the gym. I used to just

stay home after school or in the weekend and not do anything productive. I

recently stopped going to the gym because I don't like working out with a lot of

people and I don't like feeling rushed with the machines. But I still work out at

home almost everyday.

One thing that's changed my like a lot is having 2 older sisters help me through life. And

even now that one is moved out, all 3 of use still hang out almost every week. If I didn't have

sisters I think my life would be a lot different then it is now. Or even if they were younger sisters

instead of older sister I think I would still be a different person than I am today.

One way I've grown is physically. In the past 2 years I've grown more that 8 inches in

total. I want to be a minimum of 64 when I'm fully grown. Right now I'm 6 tall I would be ok

with staying this height but I do want to grow more than I am now.

In conclusion, I've changed a lot in the past couple of years. I've started to work out

17
without any motivation at all except what I get out of it. I've also had 2 sisters throughout my

whole life that never left my side and won't ever leave my side. And I've also grown physically a

lot my growing more than 8 in the past 2 years. I like who I am today better than who I was 2

years ago.

Shadows in Bright Places

Maya Angelou got her first job declined because of the worst reason possible, you will

not believe why. In the book I Know How The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, this is the

story of what she did when she got a job declined because of her skin color. After having a harsh

first years of her life in Stamps, Arkansas living with her grandmother, brother, and uncle she is

still able to move to California and live with her mother again. She then decides to get her first

job and that job is to be a street car conductor. She sees an ad in a newspaper for a streetcar

conductor. But when she goes to get the job the receptionist says that she needs to come from an

agency even though the ad did not say anything about an agency. Maya Angelou is caged by

racism and is able to embody the freedom to sing through being the first colored conductor.

Maya feels caged when a job application is declined because of her skin color. When

Maya realizes it is time to get a job she tries to be a street car conductor. But the receptionist

refuses to give her the job because of her skin color. To her question of what I planned to do, I

replied that I would get a job on the street cars. She rejected the proposal with: They dont

accept people of color on the street cars In the quote the receptionist tells Maya that they do not

want people of color on the street cars. That means that if Maya was not a person of colored then

she would have gotten the job with no problem at all. But since that is what caged Maya she is

not going to let a racist white receptionist stop her that easily. She went against society and

pushed herself to get the job and she ended up getting the job in the end. When Maya tries to get

her first job it is declined because she is a person of color.

Maya is able to feel free when she motivates herself to do anything to get the job. When

Maya gets home after her job is declined she motivates herself with this quote. I would have the

19
job. I would be a conductorette and sling a full money changer from my belt. I would(268).

Maya is saying in this quote is that she is going to get the job and be the first conductorette. This

quote is very important because this is what motivated her to not stop trying to get the job. When

Maya convinces herself to stick to getting the job she makes herself feel free.

Maya feels stuck when racism hits her and makes her feel free is when she fights through

and gets a job after she is told that they do not let colored people work that job. Maya tries to be

a conductorette but the receptionist does not let her because she is colored. Then she decides to

push herself to fight racism to get the job even though she was not able to. Today in some

schools around the world the teachers still do not treat children of color the same and white

children even though they should be for example I saw a video of a teacher helping a white child

but when a child of color asked for help the teacher did not help the child at all.

Part Time Indian Essay

Imagine if you believed everything you heard about you even if it was bad. In the book

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian written by Sherman Alexie a smart indian

boy named Arnold is open to racism when he goes to an all white school. In this book Arnold

loses his best friend just because he wanted to change schools. Instead of going to a school where

it is only Native Americans, he decides to go to an all white school for a better education even

though he knows that he will get bullied. Arnolds identity is affected by the internal conflict of

internal oppression and external conflict of racism.

When Arnold starts to hear what people say about him and other Native Americans he

starts to think that they really are true. In the book Arnold says Reardan was the opposite of the

rez. It was the opposite of my family. It was the opposite of me. I didnt deserve to be there. I

knew it; all the kids knew it. Indians didnt deserve shit (56). This quote is saying that Arnold is

starting to believe what the white people are saying, like Indians do not deserve freedom or a

good education. And now he is starting to say it too. Since Arnold is a very smart kid he deserves

to have a better school with better teachers and better students. But now since he believes them

he thinks he should stay in his old school and get a bad education. Arnold is believing the bad

things about him so it is making him a worse person in general.

Arnold meets the girl of his dreams names Penelope but her dad is a racist and doesnt

want him in his life. When Penelope introduces him to her dad he says Kid if you make my

daughter pregnant, if you make some charcoal babies. Im going to disown her. (109). What he

is saying is that if Arnold gets Penelope pregnant, he does not want anything to do with it. So he

will no longer be her dad. That hurts Arnold because the girl that he loves, her dad seems like he

21
will do anything for his daughter to date a white boy instead of an indian boy. And that makes

Arnold feel like thats not the right girl for him. Arnold finds the girl of his dream but her dad

hates his guts.

Internal oppression and racism changed who Arnold is as a person and a character. When

Arnold starts to believe all the racist thing people say about Indians he then starts to live that type

of lifestyle. Everyone that is not Indian says that Indian people are animals that kill white people

and that makes Arnold start to act like that. Arnold turns into someone who he is not because of

all the racist things things he hears about Indians. In the book people say Indians are killers, and

animals. That causes Arnold to punch kids and be violent even though those kids could have

easily beat him up

Imagine if you lived at a time where you couldnt get a job just because you were

married. Throughout history rules were never fair. In the book,The Breadwinner by Arvella

Whitmore, a child has to help her mother and father survive during the Great Depression. Three

ways in which gender influences the choices made by characters in The Breadwinner are shown

by in the choices made by Frank, Lucy, and Mrs.Willard.

22
The first reason that gender affects Frank is because Frank had to go west to get a job. In
this part of the book Sarah is reading Franks letter he left them to tell that he was going west to
find a job. The author writes, To my way of thinking, it doesnt make a bit of sense to stay on
here and do nothing while I eat up your share of food. So Im taking the first freight train west.
All the way to California if I have to. This quote shows that Frank left them to get a job to help
Lucy and Sarah survive. In conclusion, Frank leaves to get a job to get money and help his
family survive.

Another way Gender affects the choices made by characters in the story is that
Mrs.Willard has to work with her husband. This quote shows that Mrs.Willard is working with
her husband. The author writes, At the hardware store Sarahs heart pounded in her ears.
Mr.Willards wife, who was one of Sarahs costumers, stood at the counter. Why, Sarah, what
could I do for you?she askedI'd like to talk to Mr.Willard. This quote supports my topic
sentence because it shows how Mrs.Willard is working with her husband at the hardware store.
That is the second way gender affects people in The Breadwinner.

The last way gender affects what people do in The Breadwinner is that Lucy cant be a
teacher because she was married. This quote shows that Lucy is telling Frank that no school will
take her because she is a married women. The author writes, Mama sighed. I wish i could
teach again, Frank. But the school dont take married women, and today Id have to have a
certificate from a teachers college. This quote backs up my topic sentence because it is proving
that they dont take women who are married. That is the last way that gender affects people in
The Breadwinner.

As i have proven, those are the three ways that gender issue affects people in The

Breadwinner. In society people were never treated the way people should be treated. In the story

The Breadwinner by Arvella Whitmore the idea of gender issue is shown when Lucy couldnt

become a teacher just because she was a married women. As a society, we should remember that

we always stick together and stay together.

23
The U.S. is a place that still needs to finish being built
The end goal is to have all races and religions have no hate for each other
No more killing, rape, etc.
Everyday there are hate crimes all over America
Just like a kid with legos
We have to be the citizens of the U.S.
And make this place a fun place for anyone and anything
America is the most diverse country
With races from all around the world
We dont need the racist
We dont need the unnecessary killing
We dont need white people to have more power
Than every other race
We need all races to be treated equally
We need all races to be looked at the same
We need all races to be trusted the same
No place will ever be perfect
It wont even be close to perfect
But we can make America way better than it is now
America is supposed to be the land of freedom
The only people who have freedom
Are the rich white people
Most people of color cant even go to get groceries
Without being looked at
Or questioned by another person
We all just need to sit down
An figure out how to build America up
Just like a little kid with legos
Why is it that when a white male can kill
And only go to jail for maybe 1 year
But is a black or latino male kills
He is sentenced 25 years to life
Or if a white female is walking with a gucci bag
Some people might think she bought that with drug money
Or stolen money
But if it is a white female with a gucci
Some people think she is successful
Or has a really good paying job
But when they can really be in the same scenario

24
I walk with earth under my feet
I walk with vision in my eyes
I walk with fire inside me
I walk with spirits as my guide
when I feel like I can't breathe
I take a walk and I am healed
I'm walking back to the center
I'm walking through the sacred field
I'm walking deeper and deeper
learning the secret to the night
I'm m looking Into the fire
I'm m looking past the light
when I feel like I can't breathe
I take a walk and I am healed
I'm walking back to the center
I'm m running through the sacred field
I hear them calling my name
I pray to the Great Spirit
guide me through this pain
this world conflicts
show me a world that holds no lies
that treats us like convicts
abandoned by society
in a world we once walked so free
Show me a setting sun
where blood never flows
like rivers turned red
where another one dies
underneath these blood red skies
Guide me through this land so dead
where visions stay in my head
teach me things nobody knows
when this day is gone
and all has come undone
Give me the strength I need
to make this a better place
when my people bleed
from this world falling from grace
