The national anthem of India, Jan-Gan-Man, was orginally composed in Bengali by
Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The Hindi version was first sung on December 27, 1911 at the Calcutta session of Indian National Congress. It was chosen as the national anthem on January 24, 1950. A shorter version consisting of the first and the last lines of the National Anthem is played on certain occasions.
