White printing or writing papers, shavings and off cuts, white envelope cuttings, banks, bonds, sulphate
boards, and bleached krafts, free from mechanical and thermo-mechanical fibres, laminates, and any
sort of adhesives, varnishes or wet-strength chemicals. May contain a maximum of 25 percent coating
or filler, but no print other than small register marks.
White shavings or offcuts of paper or card with no printing other than black or coloured register marks
or single line small print. Free from varnished papers, label papers and all mechanical or thermo-
mechanical fibres. Each bale may contain a maximum of 5 percent pastel-coloured base paper
shavings. Maximum of 10 percent coated material may be included by agreement with purchaser.
White shavings, sheets and guillotined offcuts of black printed coated or uncoated unbound books and
pamphlets. No coloured base paper, bible paper or other wet beaten paper is acceptable, but woodfree
book quire may be included with a maximum of 5 percent coloured illustrations. Bindings must be
cotton stitchings or wire staples only and must contain no glue whatsoever.
Book Quire
Shavings, sheets and guillotined offcuts of white unbound book papers printed black only. No hard
covers, bindings, bible papers, other heavily beaten papers, or coated papers. Maximum of 5 percent
mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres and a maximum of 5 percent coloured illustrations acceptable.
Objectionable materials: none (except binders, and cottons by agreement with individual mills).
Sulphate Waste
Trimmings, offcuts or overruns of white retail unused sugar or flour bags free from all wet strength
resins and non-white adhesives. May be printed in coloured inks but not blanket printed all over. Must
contain no sulphite shop bags but may contain other 100 percent sulphate waste, e.g. greeting card or
carton waste.
White NCR paper in slab form or continuous forms. May be printed but should be essentially new
material such as printers' over-runs or redundant stocks. Free from mechanical or thermo-mechanical
fibres. A maximum of 5 percent "used" material may be included by agreement.
White unused continuous business forms or invoices lightly printed on one side only (with the
exception of a small address or instruction on the reverse). Free from NCR paper, carbon paper, printed
carbon box, laser/heat printed material, thermo-graphic printing, heavily loaded papers, plastic based
inks, edge gluing or any other type of adhesive. Up to 10 percent uncontaminated but used material
may be included by agreement. Maximum of 5 percent mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres is
permitted and a maximum of 5 percent white listings.
White writing paper lightly printed on one side but which can be typed or written on both sides. Free
from coatings, manila file covers, binders, envelopes, plan papers, heavily-loaded papers or printing by
the thermo-graphic or xerographic processes. White cheque waste either in trim form or shredded is not
acceptable, nor are azure dyed, well beaten papers, tax forms, circular printed letters, and book quire.
May contain white woodfree sulphate boards, lightly printed on one side only, and can include up to 5
percent mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres and 5 percent carbonless copy paper. Laser or heat
print to a maximum of 10 percent per bale is acceptable.
Objectionable materials: none, but can include pins and small fasteners.
White woodfree paper in continuous form for computer data listing. No printing other than feint lines
and computer printout. Free from coatings, bindings, carbonless copy paper, adhesives and all laser
heat printings. Must not contain any white continuous business forms, heavy letter or mechanical "till"
attachments. Maximum content of mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres, up to 5 percent. Per bale.
White woodfree paper in continuous form for computer data listing. No printing other than feint lines
and computer printout. Free from coatings, bindings, carbonless copy paper, adhesives and all laser and
heat printings. Must not contain any white continuous business forms, heavy letter or mechanical "till"
attachments. Maximum content of mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres up to 20 percent per bale.
Shavings, off cuts, slabs and blanks of white coated unprinted news and magazine papers. Free from
wallpaper base or beer mats/stampings.
White computer printout made from mechanical or thermo-mechanical pulp printed by computer or
typewritten. Free from laser or heat print and all glues and bindings. May contain wood free listings by
agreement.
Off cuts, sheets or cuttings or white duplex board made from bleached/semi-bleached wood pulps; may
contain coatings of a non-wax or varnish base but must be free from micro-crystalline laminates or
layerings and all print. Non wet strength unprinted beer mat trim can be included by agreement.
Shavings, off cuts, slabs and blanks of white unprinted newsprint or similar mechanical papers. May
contain white machine-glazed paper by agreement. Free from coatings, wallpaper, beer mat waste or
stampings.
Woody One-Cuts
Shavings of newsprint or other mechanical papers, lightly printed; may contain maximum 10 percent
coloured print but not dyed paper. Must not contain latex tips or other bindings or magazine trim. May
contain coated papers and some wood free trim by agreement.
White or coloured coated or uncoated periodicals and brochures free from non-flexible covers,
bindings, varnishes, non-dispersible inks and adhesives, poster papers, labels or label trim. May include
heavily printed circulars and coloured shavings.
Coloured NCR paper, free from heavy print, either in sheet or shavings form. Should generally be
unused (i.e. from printers, manufacturers or redundant stock), and free from mechanical fibres, edge
gluing, and deep yellow or old gold papers. Maximum 10 percent "used" material may be included by
agreement.
Coloured unused continuous business forms or invoices lightly printed on one side only with the
exception of a small address or instruction on the reverse. Free from all mechanical fibres, thermo-
graphic printing, plastic inks, bindings, and any adhesives. May contain up to 10 percent carbonless
copy paper but no printed carbon blocks. Up to 10 percent uncontaminated but used material may be
included by agreement. Woodfree listings may be included, but all letter grades must be excluded.
Note: The base coloured papers must be of pastel shades only and bleachable. All deep colours and in
particular old gold or deep yellows must be avoided.
Coloured writing paper lightly printed on one side or typed or written on both sides. May also contain
woodfree sulphate boards printed on one side only. Free from manila file covers, binders, envelopes,
plan paper, heavily loaded papers, deep dyed or well beaten papers, and printed circular letters or any
thermo-graphic or xerographic print. Maximum 10 percent mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres
may be included by agreement; cheque waste may also be included by agreement.
Woodfree reel strippings or slabs, direct from paper mills, unprinted. Baled to colour. Free from wet
strength materials.
Coloured Shavings
White and coloured coated and uncoated shavings free from file covers and all-over print. They may,
however, be lightly printed and contain maximum of 10 percent pastel coloured beater dyed bleachable
shavings. Maximum 10 percent mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres may be included by
agreement.
Coloured Tissue
Offcuts, side trim, slab waste and mill broke pastel coloured soft tissue excluding deep-dyed reds,
browns, etc. Free from mechanical fibres, though soft mechanical roll cores are acceptable as long as
they are part of the offcut or trim. Parent roll centres or log ends must be excluded, along with
polythene toilet roll wrappers and labels. No other paper grades may be included.
Objectionable materials: none.
Multigrade
A mixture of various papers whose overall appearance must be bright and light. A maximum of 25
percent of coloured best pams may be in each bale, the remainder consisting of 25 percent woodfree
coloured shavings and a minimum of 15 percent white heavy letter or woodfree book quire. The rest of
the bale may be made up of thermo-mechanical fibres to a maximum of 10 percent. Must be free from
all latex binders, self-adhesive labels and other contraries. These percentages may be varied by
agreement with the buyer.
Offcuts, slabs, blanks, sheets or over issue white printed sulphite shop bags and card. Free from heavy
print and binders. Maximum 15 percent mechanical or thermo-mechanical fibres.
Printers' shavings and offcuts of white and bleachable pastel shade papers, free from mechanical fibres,
print, coatings, adhesives, polythene and other laminates. Each bale must have some white shavings in
it.
Crushed News
Newspapers which have been read. May contain all types of newspapers but must not include "pams"
or magazines. Maximum of 5 percent lightly dyed newspapers may be included.
Computer listings made from mechanical fibres and tinted green. May be printed or typewritten and
contain a mixture of white mechanical listings or printouts but be free from all glues or bindings.
Sheets, offcuts and stampings of folding boxboard which have been heavily printed; must be free from
grey middles, laminates and non-water soluble glues.
Books printed on mechanical papers coated or uncoated which have not been stitched or bound in any
form. Tinted papers should be baled separately from the white paper and sold as separate grades.
Maximum of 5 percent coloured print acceptable.
Newspapers and magazines free from latex backed or bound books, periodicals, telephone directories,
or plastic laminated covers. The magazine content must not exceed 30 percent of each bale.
Unsold newspapers free from pins, coated or sized papers, paper containing water retardant chemicals.
Maximum of 5 percent lightly dyed newsprint and supplements (provided they are stapled) may be
included by agreement with mill.
Over issue periodicals or magazines printed on mechanical coated or uncoated paper, stapled but not
bound in a latex glue. Free from plastic laminated or varnished covers. May contain a maximum of 5
percent dyed paper by agreement.
Telephone Quire
Over issue printed mechanical papers for telephone directories which have not been stitched, bound or
glued. Free from plastic laminates and grey board covers. Maximum 5 percent pastel shades
acceptable.
Manila computer punch cards printed or unprinted. May include small percentage of plastic "correction
spots". Buffs may be separated from "coloureds" by agreement.
Unprinted buff envelope cuttings, sheets or shavings made from a mixture of mechanical and
unbleached sulphate pulp. Free from adhesives, "windows" or plastic laminates.
File covers printed or plain, offcuts or sheets, used or unused. Must be clean and free from latex labels
and metal inserts.
Kraft Liner
Offcuts and slabs of new unprinted natural shade kraft papers. Free from waxed or bitumen-union,
plastic laminates and wet strength. Some printed materials may be acceptable by agreement.
New or clean used sacks including those used for starch, china clay or cornflour. Free from polythene
or plastic laminates and bitumen linings, cement sacks and certain chemical sacks. Some wet strength
plies may be included by agreement.
Unprinted kraft strippings or sheets (excluding cable kraft) of various shades manufactured from virgin
fibres. Free from waxes or bitumen-union and plastic laminates.
Used brown and coloured kraft wrapping papers; may be printed or written on. Free from wet strength,
polythene or wax laminates but may contain a small percentage of sticky tape or labels.
New trimmings, cuttings and unused containers of corrugated board from box manufacturers. Free
from tapes and labels. The fluting may be grey chip or semi-chemical and the cuttings may contain
print.
Used printed or unprinted cardboard boxes and solid fibreboard boxes. The proportion of solid board
must not exceed 10 percent per bale. May contain a minimum of adhesive tape.
Objectionable materials: 2 percent, but excluding wax, bitumen, plastic laminates, unshredded cores,
egg boxes and kraft bags.
Mixed Papers
Mixed and various types of repulpable paper, cartons and board. Must not contain more than 10 percent
of news and pams or wet strength materials.
Coloured Card
Offcuts, sheets and blanks of printed or unprinted card, new or used, grey chipboard, white lined
boxboard or waste based boards, but free from strawboard and microcrystalline laminates.
Offcuts, sheets and stampings of beer mats or beer mat board wet strength or varnished. It is normal to
keep the printed separate from the unprinted.
Offcuts, sheets and blanks of foil-lined bleached and semi-bleached printed pulp base board. Free from
wet strength.
Objectionable materials: none (but excluding poster paper containing infrared/ultraviolet cured inks).
Mechanical or woody cuttings from books after they have been bound. May contain latex tips but must
exclude plastic laminated board covers and trimmings and certain types of varnish and cast coatings.
Photographic Papers
Offcuts, sheets, blanks and reels of white wet strength photo-base papers. Free from foil backings,
laminates or polyethylene coating.
Clean kraft sacks or offcuts free from wet strength but which contain plastic pellets or granules. Must
be free from poly-sprayed and bitumen-union linings.
Milk and soft drink carton waste with a polythene coating. Printing must be on the polythene. Free
from wax-coated or foil-lined board.
Kraft sacks free from wet strength, but which have a sprayed polythene coating on one of the plies.
Must not contain separate polythene inners or linings, and be free from bitumen-union kraft.
Silicone-Coated Papers
Over issue and once-read soft cover telephone books, white mechanical paper printed black. May be
"perfect" bound with latex glue, but free from plastic laminates or grey covers. Maximum 5 percent
pastel colours acceptable.
Various types of wet strength papers, each type of which must be kept separately and baled in
individual loads. Baled to colour.
Shavings, offcuts, slabs and blanks of wet strength wallpaper and wallpaper base.
Shavings, sheets, offcuts, slab-waste and stampings, of white mechanical waxed paper or board. Free
from mechanical fibres, print or polyethylene coating.
Woodfree cuttings from books after they have been bound. May contain latex tips, but must exclude
plastic laminated cover board trimmings and certain types of varnish and cast coatings.
