War Of Roses: Introduction

The Wars of the Roses were a series of wars for control of


the throne of England fought between children of Edward III, the
King of England. The fighting was between two families that
claimed the right to the throne, House of York and the House of
Lancaster, from 1455 to 1485. The name Wars of the Roses is
based on the badges used by the two sides, the red rose for the
Lancastrians and the white rose for the Yorkists.

War Of Roses: How it Began
King Edward III was a king of England. He ruled
England from 1327-1377. He was regarded as a very good
king. Englands military was very powerful because of him.
Edward was crowned when he was fourteen years old,
after his father was forced to resign. He gained a lot of
territory. When he became older, he was much less active,
mostly a result of his bad health. He died of a stroke in
1377 aged 64.

the House of Lancaster and House of York.

And thats how the War of Roses began.

Because of King Richard IIs young age and many


unpopular decisions, many civilians didnt like him.

Richard II and killed him.

Henry IV faced some problems and rebellion


problems but he overcame them. He ruled for 14
years before dying in 1413.

of the House of Landcaster

after Edward IV died in 1483

Edward V ruled for only two years but was


overthrown by his uncle Richard III.

Richard III claimed that Edward V was born


from a unofficial marriage and had no rights to
be the king so he became the king.

Until Henry VII, House of Lancaster,


appeared and overthrown Richard III.

Henry VII wanted to stop the conflicts so he


married Elizabeth of York to unite the two
house into House of Tudor.

War of Roses: Significance
After the war, House of Tudors are established. House of
Tudors would eventually become a strong ruling dynasty and
influence England in many ways. Moreover, the Tudors helped
England moved from Medieval Era to a Modern Era. One of the
important contributions of the Tudors is calming down the
religious conflicts in England.
