ABOUT UNFOLD
<exhibition>

At a Lme when immigra<on and diversity are in the news everyday, UNFOLD is an
exhibiLon which invites the audience to reconsider stereotypes, no<ons and even
expecta<ons of the Other. LaLn America is sLll oVen presented as a global and
simplied version of all the countries that spread over a wide geographical area.
ArLsts from this region are oVen expected to respond to features that have been socially
and culturally constructed as the exoLc.

This exhibiLon presents the work of arLsts that work in a globalised era whilst conLnuously
negoLaLng with their own cultural stereotypes that operate inside and outside of those countries.
For that reason the concept 'unfold' by Gilles Deleuze I staken. It refers to a form of connec<on, in
which all of the universe is a process of folding and unfolding the outside which creates an interior
that is not an inside grown autonomously from the outside world, but merely a doubling of the
outside (a concept he elaborates from Foucault). Taking a piece of paper and folding it creates a line,
which immediately divides inside and outside, but it sLll is part of the same whole.

UNFOLD invites visitors to understand arLsts from LaLn America building their body of work as the
inside part of their own process of folding and unfolding, inuenced by their individual contexts
whilst each having their own perspec<ve that comes from a universal language within a globalised
era the outside.

This exhibiLon showcases exclusively works on paper, exploring this media as a response to the
challenges faced by arLsts in an increasingly media-saturated world. 4
UNFOLDs approach to the
La<n American & Eastern
European art scenes aims to
open dialogue about ar<s<c &
collec<ng prac<ces in both
regions to understand how they
have developed and thrived
through Lme.

5
WHY BUDAPEST? <venue>
Regardless of their geographic distance, the art scenes of La<n America and Eastern
Europe developed in thriving and challenging circumstances.

Despite the instability in both regions, ar<sts did not stop producing during the
oppression of the socialist state in Eastern Europe and under LaLn American military
dictatorships. On the contrary, these circumstances were crea<ve dares for ar<sts and
art promoters during adversity. ArLsts evolved their pracLces in analogue of social
repression and censorship.

ABOUT K.A.S. GALLERY

K. A. S. Gallery was founded in Budapest aVer the change of the poliLcal regime in 1990.
Its appearance was relevant as a response to build up alterna<ves to the insLtuLonal
system of the local scene when there was neither governmental support nor private
sponsorship yet for the arts in the country.

Located in the heart of Budapest, on the presLgious Bela Bartok Avenue, K.A.S. Gallery
fosters not only local, but also interna<onal ar<sts, while making cross-cultural projects
accessible to a wider audience. 6
