1 System Overview
1 System Overview
1.1 General
The 8600 Smart Routers offer a managed IP/MPLS access solution with primary focus on mobile
backhaul networks converging with fixed services. It enables smooth radio access network (RAN)
evolution from 2G and 3G to LTE and LTE Advanced while providing managed access services
for business customers. It optimizes the cost per bit in the access and aggregation networks, and
streamlines the network and service operations with the help of an integrated management system,
the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager. The 8600 Smart Routers and the 8000 Intelligent Network
Manager are designed and tested as a solution that makes deployment and operation easy for
operators. The platform is easy to scale and enhance with small incremental investments, justifying
it as a long-term platform.
The 8600 system and IP/MPLS technology enable the use of a mixture of transport technologies
and provide an easy transition path to pure packet transport. Operators can use the 8600 system
as a unified access platform for any service for both mobile and fixed access customers. Accurate
synchronization is critical for mobile network operation. Along with the technology transition
to packet based technologies, synchronization must be part of the solution. The 8600 system
offers comprehensive packet synchronization tools integrated throughout the entire system.
Advanced synchronization caters not only the needs of 3G and LTE networks but also the phase
synchronization requirement of the LTE Advanced. IP/MPLS technology provides superior benefits
for access networks as it simplifies the network operations administration and maintenance (OAM),
supports multiple transport and service protocols and offers great QoS and resilience management.
Mobile operators are challenged by the increasing amount of data traffic and higher service
speeds with lowering revenue per delivered bit. This sets a major challenge not only to the RAN
infrastructure but also to the backhaul network. As a packet based platform the 8600 system helps
the mobile operator to optimize the mobile backhaul cost by integrating all technologies to one
platform and exploiting the most cost efficient transport available. The key strength of the 8600
system is the fact that it caters for the whole RAN technology transformation from TDM and ATM
to IP and Ethernet, cost-effectively managing the coexistence of all technologies.
The platform is positioned to support the whole transport network all the way from the cell sites to
the edge of the mobile core. However, despite the comprehensive coverage of the 8600 system,
operators have the flexibility to deploy the system to the network in phases or to selected locations
only. 8600 is truly a RAN vendor agnostic solution operating as an efficient and unified mobile
backhaul solution with any RAN vendor.

1 System Overview
The 8600 system offers an optimal solution for every mobile backhaul location. The interface and
switching capacity of the 8600 system is designed to scale from megabits to hundreds of gigabits
as required by network growth. The main benefit of deploying 8600 at the RNC or gateway site
location is to optimize the capacity and interface use between the access and core, regardless of
the RAN technology. 8600 at the access aggregation location mainly optimizes the bandwidth
utilization for various protocols as well as takes care of the quality of service and resiliency
management. As Ethernet density and throughput is becoming more and more important, the new
Ethernet optimized network elements and line cards provide a cost-effective way to significantly
increase network capacity.
Deploying 8600 at the cell sites enables the operator to optimize the transport capacity, technologies
and QoS for the last mile. The compact, environmentally hardened network elements enable
end-to-end service management with full service level visibility and accurate site synchronization
over any transport connectivity. The customer can choose the right model to meet the installation,
cost and flexibility needs from the 8600 cell site devices portfolio. Automated router deployment
makes the cell site deployment truly a plug-and-play process.
The 8600 system together with its flexible interface options and integrated pseudowire, VPLS
and IP VPN service support offers all the options for implementing the traffic aggregation at
each level of the network. This flexibility allows the operator to use the most optimal transport
media and technology including fiber, copper, E1/T1 leased lines, microwave radios, Ethernet and
SDH/SONET. At the same time the system allows the operator to take strategic moves from one
technology to another to simplify the network and operations. Since both routed and switched
options for connectivity are inherently part of the solution, the operator can always choose the
optimal networking technology.
Mobile operators are faced with major RAN swap-outs including renewed RAN technologies and
new RAN vendors. The 8600 mobile backhaul can easily adapt to these changes. The 2G and 3G
connections based on TDM, ATM or IP can be carried in a managed way while the LTE is rolled
out. The backhaul network can remain and be operated with the same processes. Services and
connections based on IP, including 3G, WiMAX or LTE are often preferred as IP VPN services. All
types of pseudowires, IP VPNs and VPLS services can be easily provisioned, tested and monitored
with the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager. All service and connectivity management, whether
based on layer 3 or layer 2, is made simple and highly automated with the 8000 Intelligent Network
Manager.
1.3 Management
The 8600 system can be efficiently managed with the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager, a network
management system providing easy-to-use tools for network building, monitoring, service creation,
testing, synchronization management and control.
The command-line interface (CLI) naturally provides access to equal functionality to configure and
monitor the 8600 products with ASCII textual commands using a routers console or remote terminal
(Telnet). However, in comparison to CLI the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager makes the network
operations much faster and straightforward as it can bundle multiple operations and automate
the processes. With the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager, network complexity is simplified by
a graphical user interface with access to all element functionality. Up-to-date information of the
network and services can be simultaneously accessed by several users. Additionally the same 8000
Intelligent Network Manager provides end-to-end management for all Coriant product families.
Integration to third party OSS systems is facilitated by the well-documented northbound interfaces.
Thanks to its rich capabilities, scalability and robustness, 8600 customers typically rely heavily on
the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager as the primary management interface.
25
1 System Overview
The 8000 Intelligent Network Manager is being further enhanced with unique Self Organizing
Networks (SON) tools that fully automate a number of essential tasks in the daily operations.
Automated deployment as a plug-and-play process is one of the advanced SON functionalities of the
8600 Smart Routers and the 8000 Intelligent Network Manager.
26
2 Network Element Overview
2.1 Subrack
8660 Smart Router subrack can be installed into 19 rack. The outer dimensions of the subrack are
446 mm/17.56 in x 633 mm/24.92 in x 305 mm/12.01 in (w x h x d). The outer dimensions of the
8660 Smart Router R2 subrack are 425 mm/ 16.73 in x 642 mm/25.28 in x 357 mm/14.06 in (w x h
x d), the width with the integrated side adapter front flange is 483 mm/19.02 in.
The 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack mechanics have an improved airflow and the changing of the air
filter and the 8660 Smart Router R2 fan modules has been made easier than before. The 8660 Smart
Router R2 subrack also contains an improved backplane which allows the subrack and backplane
serial numbers to be read by software from an EEPROM device, thereby making them visible on
8000 intelligent network manager and CLI. The 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack backplane contains
an enhanced presence detection system which allows reliable detection of mis-inserted units.
When ELC1 cards are present in 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack or 8660 Smart Router subrack
V3.0 or V3.1, the blank cover plates with the air guide (part number 81.86B-LCBLANK-R6 'LC
blank cover with air guide') must be used.

2.1.1 Backplane
8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router use backplane architecture. This means that all the
cards are of front access type. The backside of the subrack has just metal cover and all the
interface connectors are located on the front side. The backplane itself is passive and only provides
connectors and signal paths for data packet transfer and power distribution among cards.
The backplane data transmission architecture is based on differential, point-to-point signals where
each card is a center point for star topology. The main advantage is that there is no need for a
traditional switch card. There is no separate internal communication bus between the cards in the
NE but the control traffic is transferred like any data packet between two cards. The other buses are
the power bus, synchronization (clock) bus, fan module control bus and card presence bus.
There are 14 slots of which 12 (slots 2...13) are available for the line cards with user traffic
interfaces. The two outermost slots (1, 14) are for Control and DC Power Cards (CDC).
29
2 Network Element Overview
The control and DC-feed functionality has been combined into a single card in order to have as many
slots as possible for line cards. CDC in the slot 14 is mandatory in all configurations. Equipping
slot 1 with another CDC depends on protection needs, however, it is highly recommended. All
cards are hot-removable and hot-insertable. To change or install an interface module, the IFC line
card needs to be removed from the subrack.

2.1.3 Cooling
8660 Smart Router has three hot swappable fan modules. The available types include two types of
fan modules for the 8660 Smart Router V3.1 subrack and one for the 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack.
The HW dependencies of different fan module revisions and subrack revisions can be found in
chapter 2.7 Hardware Dependencies of 8630 Smart Router Subrack and 8660 Smart Router Subrack.
The ELC1 cooling requirements can be found in chapter 6.9 ELC1 Cooling.
The 8660 Smart Router R1 fan module upgrade kit can be used to ensure increased cooling
capability in 8660 Smart Router subrack V3.0 or V3.1. So, if a 8660 Smart Router subrack V3.1
or V3.0 is furnished with ELC1 cards, fan modules need to be updated to 8660 Smart Router R1
fan modules. The basic operation of cooling is the same with these fan modules and subracks. The
difference is the increased cooling capability and thus increased power consumption of the fans. Fan
module mechanics and the operating voltage for the fan modules have also changed.
8660 Smart Router is a forced convection-cooled equipment. Fresh air is taken from the
bottom-front of the subrack and funneled through the cards and the outlet air is led to the top.
Forced cooling is needed to dissipate the generated heat load and to maintain the components
within their operating limits.
Three fan modules, located below the card shelf, blow air through the cards. One module consists of
two parallel fans. In case of a failure in one fan, the other five will maintain adequate cooling for
a limited time.
ELC1 cards above a failed fan module will go to power-save mode if both fans of the same fan
module have been inoperative for over 6 minutes. This is to protect the cards against overheating.
This has to be noted also when replacing fan modules.
The control board of the CDC monitors and controls the equipment temperature by adjusting the fan
rotation speed via the backplane. The rotation speed control of the fans is based on the temperature
values measured from the components on the cards in the NE. The speed is adjusted in three steps,
approximately 50%, 75% and 100% of the maximum rotation speed of the fans. The 8660 Smart
Router R1 fan module and 8660 Smart Router R2 fan module support 16-step fan speed control in
FP4.0 or higher software. At start-up the fans are running at full speed until the equipment is booted
up and able to monitor the card temperatures. The operating temperature of a card measured by
any sensor is targeted to be below +67 C/+152.6 F. If any sensor exceeds that value, the rotation
speed of the fans will be adjusted to maintain it. Typically fans are running at their minimum
speed at ambient below +35 C/+95 F.
32
2 Network Element Overview
There are several temperature measuring sensors on the ELC1 card. Some of them measure
component internal temperature, the others measure card temperatures in different locations. Each
sensor has its own threshold for high temperature warning and critical temperature alarms. A high
temperature warning is raised when the measured sensor temperature exceeds its time-conditional
threshold for over 15 minutes and immediately when the high unconditional threshold is exceeded.
The high temperature warning indicates that the operating ambient temperature is high and about to
exceed the allowed operating range. If the warning occurs and the equipment is not used in high
ambient temperature, it may be advisable to change the air filter and to check that there are no
obstacles preventing smooth air flow. When operating at sea level and the air filter is clean, this
warning will occur at ambient near +45 C/+113 F.
The ELC1 card will go to power-save mode if the critical time-conditional threshold is exceeded for
over 15 minutes or immediately if the unconditional threshold is exceeded. The ELC1 card will stay
in power-save mode for about 8-9 minutes before it checks if the conditions are acceptable.
ELC1 cards placed above a failed fan module will go to power-save mode if both fans of the
same fan modules are not running.
In the CDC and IFC card there are a few temperature sensors. Their measurement results are
referred to as common limits. If the high time-conditional limit is exceeded for over 15 minutes
or immediately if the high unconditional threshold is exceeded, a warning will be raised. This
warning indicates that the operating ambient temperature is high and about to exceed the allowed
operating range. If the warning occurs and the equipment is not used in high ambient temperature,
it may be advisable to change the air filter and to check that there are no obstacles preventing
smooth air flow. When operating at sea level and the air filter is clean, this warning will occur at
ambient near +50 C/+122 F.
33
2 Network Element Overview
The CDC or IFC will go to reset mode after 15 minutes if the measured temperature of that card
exceeds the critical time-conditional threshold for over 15 minutes or immediately if the critical
unconditional threshold is exceeded. This is to protect the equipment from permanent damage
caused by high temperature.
Air Filtering
The air filter prevents dust from entering the subrack and keeps the cards clean in order to maintain
adequate cooling. The air filter is located below the fan modules in 8660 Smart Router subrack
and in front of the fan modules in 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack. All empty card slots must be
shielded with a cover plate.
The fan modules and air filter can be replaced on the fly without disturbing the data traffic through
the NE.
Fan Module
A fan module has two brushless fans, two fan drive circuits and a common control logic including a
watchdog. Fuses protect the input against over-current, similarly the fan drive circuits have short
circuit protection and limited output current in case of a fan failure. CDC is able to control as well
as monitor the operation of the fan module. If CDC fails to control the module, the watchdog
will set the fan speed to maximum.
There are three LEDs visible on the front edge of the fan module.

2.2 Powering
CDC provides input for DC power source. The nominal input voltage is -48 Vdc, and it is distributed
to each card via the backplane. Each card has its own embedded isolating DC/DC converter to
create all the voltages needed to operate the card. CDC also has power supply for the subrack fan
modules. The main power feeding features are the following:
Circuit breaker with over-current protection and power switch (can be latched)
Polarity protection
EMI filtering
Surge protection
Hold-up time provider
It is possible to use two CDCs in order to protect the power feeding. In case of a loss of either
input voltage, the NE still operates normally. Redundancy covers the power distribution path on
the backplane as well.
8660 Smart Router R2 subrack can optionally also be powered with 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48
Power Input Modules.
If the 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48 Power Input Modules are used with the 8660 Smart Router
R2 subrack, the DC power feed capabilities of CDC are not used.
The typical and maximum power consumption values for each card and module of the 8600
product family are defined in the corresponding technical specifications in the Reference Manuals.
In addition, these values are stored on the non-volatile memories, EEPROMs, of the cards and
modules. An estimation of the power consumption of a particular NE installation is calculated as a
sum of all cards and modules in the network element.
The network element software automatically calculates the sum of the power consumption values
from the EEPROMs of the installed cards and modules in the network element. The software
then compares the power consumption sum with the maximum permissible power consumption
or cooling capacity (smaller value used by software) for the network element. If the maximum
permissible power is exceeded, an alarm will be raised and no new cards or modules will be
accepted into the hw-inventory and thus the usage of the cards will not be allowed.
37
2 Network Element Overview
Coriant has measured and evaluated the power consumptions of the modules and cards and
the power capability of the NEs and adjusted the element software in a way that only reliable
installations are allowed by the software.
the sum of averages of the typical and maximum power consumption values for modules and
cards in slots 2 to 13 in 8660 Smart Router and slots 6 to 9 8630 Smart Router,
the sum of maximum power consumption values of Fan Modules,
the sum of averages of the typical and maximum power consumption values for CDC cards in
slots 1 and 14, but the DC-Feed Board of CDC is added to the sum only ONCE, even though
there may be one or two CDCs in the NE.
If the 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack is equipped with 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48 Power Input
Modules (PIMs), add the average of the typical and maximum power consumptions of PIM to
the NE power consumption sum only once, even though there are two PIMs in the NE. Do not
calculate the DC-Feed Board power consumptions at all to the NE power consumption sum.
CDC1 DC-Feed Board is CPB2207
CDC2 DC-Feed Board is CPB2260
Power consumption values of the network elements are needed for different purposes in central
offices and other telecommunications sites. To properly dimension systems and resources to support
the network elements in a sufficient but economically feasible way, the users of the 8600 products
may consider for what purpose they need the power consumption values and decide which value
they want to use for which purpose. The sum of typical power consumption values of the cards and
modules populated in the NE presents the typical power consumption of the NE in most of the cases.
The way the element software calculates the power consumption of the NE (described above) is a
good value for the maximum power consumption with quite high probability especially for 8660
Smart Router with several cards and modules in it. The sum of the maximum power consumption
values of the cards and modules is the theoretical absolute maximum power consumption value
for the NE, which is valid for the smaller NEs 8620 Smart Router and 8630 Smart Router, but
should never realize with 8660 Smart Router.
While dimensioning different things at the central offices and other telecommunications sites,
the information about the power consumption of the NE or the current drawn by the NE may be
needed. Cooling of the telecommunications site might be a good example for the former case and
dimensioning of the cables and circuit breakers for the latter. The maximum current for the NE can
be calculated by dividing the suitable evaluated maximum power consumption of the NE for the
purpose by the lowest specified battery voltage for the NE.

2.4 Synchronization
8660 Smart Router and 8630 Smart Router have an option for a common timing generator. It is
especially needed when any SONET/SDH interface is in use. The generator locates on a Timing
Module on CDC, and the timing reference signal is distributed to every card on a NE via the
backplane.
The Timing Module provides a Synchronous Equipment Clock (SEC) or Stratum 3 generator
complying with relevant requirements. Typically the NE is synchronized with a clock derived from
any of the following input signals:
For details of the synchronization functionality please refer to 8600 Smart Routers
Synchronization Configuration Guide.
The selected reference signal must be originated from an equipment having at least the SEC quality
clock, for instance, the reference signal quality must be as defined in [ETS 300 462-3] and [EN 300
462-5-1] or [GR-253-CORE]. This means, for instance, that a 2048 kHz signal which complies with
[G.703] jitter and wander requirements cannot necessarily be used as a reference.
When 8630 Smart Router or 8660 Smart Router is equipped with one CDC, the NE has one station
clock interface (SCI), i.e. one input and one output port. With a redundant CDC both ports are
duplicated and 1+1 protection is provided. The protecting port has a common parameter set with the
protected port. Both CDCs drive their own station clock output (SCO) port separately.
39
2 Network Element Overview
2.5 Redundancy
2.5.1 NE Control
8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router have an option for CDC card equipment protection.
When two equal CDC cards are installed, 1+1 protection is provided for the NE control (and
synchronization if present) functionality. At the same time the power feed functionality utilizes a
protection where the input with a higher voltage feeds the NE. A critical failure in the active CDC
will trigger an automatic switchover to a redundant card. On the other hand, a failure in the NE
power distribution will not cause a switchover because the DC inputs are shared all the time.
Ethernet Link Protection (ELP) or [IEEE 802.1AX] Ethernet Link Aggregation (LAG) are applied
for protecting Ethernet physical interfaces. For more information see 8600 Smart Routers Ethernet
Configuration Guide.

The following table shows the hardware dependencies of the 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart
Router subracks.
The HW identification codes listed below are used to identify the following HW modules.
Within one network element only the same type (A or B) of both CDC1 and IFC1 cards is
supported.
IFC2-B can however be used together with any type of CDC1 and IFC1, but if the port protection
features on IFC2-B are used, both interfaces in the protecting group must be IFC2-B.
If protection is used (two CDCs in the same NE), both CDCs must be of the same variant type
(CDC1- A & CDC1-A in the NE, CDC1-B & CDC1-B in the NE or CDC2-B & CDC2-B in the NE).
Concurrent use of CDC1 and CDC2 in the same NE is allowed only during upgrade.

3.1 Overview
Control and DC Power Card (CDC) is a basic element of 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router.
It has control over the NE functionality. It also provides DC power feed to line cards and fans, and
NE synchronization with the aid of Timing Module/block. The main hardware components of
CDC are BRAIN ASIC with associated memories, CPU subsystem, local power supply, Ethernet
interface, Timing Module or block and DC-feed board. CDC can be 1+1 protected, i.e. there
can be one or two CDCs in the NE.
In FP4.1 the CDC2 user traffic Ethernet ports are not supported. The management Ethernet
port is available.
If the 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48 Power Input Modules are used with the 8660 Smart Router
R2 subrack, the DC power feed input of the CDC must not be used.

The real time clock is for short power breaks. The time is kept for at least 20 hours (at 20
Celsius/68 Fahrenheit).
A/D Converter
There are two analog to digital converters on the control board. These are used to measure the
operating voltages and temperatures.
BRAIN ASIC
All communication and data traffic between CDC1 and other cards in 8630 Smart Router and 8660
Smart Router go through BRAIN ASIC and its high speed serial links which are connected to
the backplane. BRAIN ASIC performs layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding,
packet filtering and traffic management functions.
The Fast Ethernet interface is intended for management purposes. Data passes through BRAIN
ASIC, thus this interface can be used similarly as the Fast Ethernet ports in 10/100BASE-TX.
The asynchronous serial interface is used for CLI local management connections.
There are four dedicated alarm outputs. The Critical, Major and Minor/Warning LEDs have
corresponding alarm outputs, and the power off condition also has a dedicated output. Furthermore,
there are two general outputs and eight inputs.
Operating Voltages
The power supply block providing operating voltages is divided partly into the control board and
partly into the DC-feed board.
Test Features
During the boot up CDC1 performs self tests to verify it is OK. During normal operation CPU

3 Control and DC Power Card (CDC)
NE Inventory
CDC1 knows in which slot it is by reading the slot address bits from the backplane. It can also
detect other cards which are installed in the subrack by reading the card presence signals from
the backplane.
The DC-feed board provides battery voltage to the NE including the CDC1 baseboard. It also
generates 26 V supply voltage for fan modules and some power voltages needed by the rest of
CDC1. Redundancy can be realized by using two DC-feed boards in the NE. The working DC-feed
board (as part of CDC1) is installed in the right-most slot (14) of the subrack and the protecting
DC-feed board is installed in the left-most slot (1) of the subrack. There is no active current sharing
between the two DC-feed boards. Therefore, either of the DC-feed boards can be regarded as an
active device, and one DC-feed board is able to supply the whole current needed by 8630 Smart
Router and 8660 Smart Router.
The maximum available power depends on the CDC1 version. For details, see chapter 2.6 Technical
Specifications.
If the 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48 Power Input Modules are used with the 8660 Smart Router
R2 subrack, the DC power feed input of the CDC must not be used.
The optional Timing Module is a Synchronous Equipment Clock (SEC)/Stratum 3 generator with
a station clock interface. The station clock interface supports a G.703 2048 kHz synchronization
interface or an interface with Synchronization Status Messages. It is equipped on CDC1 or 8620
Smart Router.

The asynchronous serial interface for CLI is according to [EIA/TIA-232-E]. The baud rate for this
interface is 38400 bps. The connector type is D-sub, female, with 9 pins.
65
3 Control and DC Power Card (CDC)
The external alarm interface is used for NE alarms and user configurable outputs and inputs. It
provides outputs with solid state relay contacts and inputs for external voltage free contacts, for
example relays.
Power OFF
Critical alarm
Major alarm
Minor/Warning
The Power OFF relay contacts are closed (connected together) if the CDC battery input voltage is
lost or the CDC's own power supply has failed. During normal operation the relay contacts are open.
The Critical alarm relay contacts are closed when CDC detects a critical fault in the NE or the NE
power is switched off. See also the corresponding LED behavior.
The Major alarm relay contacts are closed when CDC detects a major fault in the NE. See also the
corresponding LED behavior.
The Minor/Warning alarm relay contacts are closed when CDC detects a minor/warning fault in
the NE. See also the corresponding LED behavior.
Two user configurable outputs are similar to conventional relay and have three pins; common
(Com), normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO) pins. The configuration is carried through
CLI or 8000 Intelligent Network Manager.
66
3 Control and DC Power Card (CDC)
Fig. 13 Input
In addition to the outputs, there are eight user configurable inputs which consist of comparator and
protecting circuits. When the input is connected below the threshold voltage, for example, to ground
by an external device (relay), the state of the input is considered to be closed, otherwise open.
The user is able to configure a possible consequence action if the input state changes, i.e. what
kind of an alarm is risen. A typical application would be, for example, site intrusion detection or
site power supply problems.

CDC2 has a watchdog to reset itself in case of a fatal failure in the CPU subsystem.
NE Inventory
CDC2 knows in which slot it is by reading the slot address bits from the backplane. It can also
detect other cards which are installed in the subrack by reading the card presence signals from
the backplane.
The DC-feed board provides battery voltage to the NE including the CDC2 baseboard. It also

between the two DC-feed boards. Therefore, either of the DC-feed boards can be regarded as an
active device, and one DC-feed board is able to supply the whole current needed by 8630 Smart
Router and 8660 Smart Router.
The maximum available power depends on the CDC2 version. For details, see chapter 2.6 Technical
Specifications.
If the 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48 Power Input Modules are used with the 8660 Smart Router
R2 subrack, the DC power feed input of the CDC must not be used.
The timing block is a Synchronous Equipment Clock (SEC)/Stratum 3 generator with a station clock

The SEC/Stratum 3 clock is distributed via the backplane to each line card where the interfaces
supporting synchronization (e.g. SDH/SONET or Synchronous Ethernet) may use it as a Tx
reference. In opposite direction, the recovered line clock can be transferred to the timing block and,
depending on the configuration, SEC/Stratum 3 is able to use it as a reference. The monitoring logic
takes care that the selected reference clock is valid. It also monitors the operation of both PLL
and other available reference clocks set on the fallback list (contains clock sources/priority order
selected by the user). If all the clock sources fail, SEC/Stratum 3 will enter into holdover mode and
maintain the frequency and phase drift within the specified limits.
The station clock input/output interface is on the front plate of the timing block. Depending on the
user needs, either coaxial or differential cabling can be used with a corresponding connector, i.e.
SMB or RJ-48c. The front panel has also the Time of Day and Pulse Per Second (PPS) interfaces
in a RJ-45 connector.

USB Port
This port is for future use and will become operational in a future software release.
The 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet interface is according to [IEEE 802]. The flow control is half
or full duplex. The connector type is RJ-45.
Console Port
The asynchronous serial interface for CLI is according to [EIA/TIA-232-E]. The baud rate for this
interface is 38400 bps. The connector type is RJ-45, female, with 8 pins.

3 Control and DC Power Card (CDC)
The external alarm interface is used for NE alarms and user configurable output and inputs. It
provides output with solid state relay contacts and inputs for external voltage free contacts, for
example relays.
The user configurable output is similar to conventional relay and have three pins; common (Com),
normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO) pins. The configuration is carried through CLI or
8000 Intelligent Network Manager.
Fig. 21 Input
In addition to the outputs, there are four user configurable inputs which consist of comparator and
protecting circuits. When the input is connected below the threshold voltage, for example, to ground
by an external device (relay), the state of the input is considered to be closed, otherwise open.
79
3 Control and DC Power Card (CDC)
The user is able to configure a possible consequence action if the input state changes, i.e. what
kind of an alarm is risen. A typical application would be, for example, site intrusion detection or
site power supply problems.
The connector type is high power two contact connector, specified to carry 48 Adc of current.
CDC2 can only be used with a power cable of 8 mm2 cross-sectional area (PS402838117539A,
PS402838117540A) that can be used to connect to the connector, reverse connection to the
connector is not possible.

4 Power Input Module
4.1 Overview
Optional DC48 Power Input Module (PIM) for 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack offers -48 Vdc supply
interface for 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack. Two PIM modules are used with 8660 Smart Router
R2 subrack 82.86S-8660-R6 when more power feed capacity than provided by CDC1-A, CDC1-B
or CDC2-B cards is needed. When CDC1-A, CDC1-B or CDC2-B cards are used to feed the power
to the 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack, PIM modules are not needed; however the 8660 Smart Router
R2 Power Backplane Assembly must be installed in both power slots.
The 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack provides two power input modules (PIM) on the front side of
the NE. Two power input modules enable redundant power feeding. The nominal input voltage
is -48 Vdc.
The -48 Vdc output of the PIM is routed to the backplane for the use of line cards and fans.
4.2 Operation
The input voltage is fed through the input fuses and filters to the input capacitors. The PIM
also includes the inrush current limiter for the capacitors and transient overvoltage protection.
Redundancy is realized by using two PIMs in the NE. There is no active current sharing between the
two PIMs. However, the current will normally be divided rather equally between the two PIMs.
One PIM is able to supply the whole current required by the 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack in
case of failure in other PIM.
84
4 Power Input Module
Fig. 24 Front Panel of Power Input Module for 8660 Smart Router R2
The input connector is located on the front side of the PIM. The -48 Vdc output voltage and signal
connector is located on the back side of the PIM.
On the PIM there is a voltage monitor for input voltage detection. If the input voltage after the
fuse is missing or too low, an alarm is forwarded to the CDC card, and a LED indicates the input
voltage status.
4.5 Cabling
The PIM can only be used with the PIM power cables. Those cables have an 16 mm 2 cross-sectional
area which corresponds to 5 AWG (American Wire Gauge). When PIMs are used in the 8660 Smart
Router R2 subrack, the CDCs shall not use a power cable.
Also a grounding cable with a thicker 16 mm 2 cross-sectional area (corresponds to 5 AWG) must be
used with the 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack with PIMs installed. For more details on power and
grounding cabling, please refer to 8600 Smart Routers Hardware Installation Guide.

6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
6.1 Overview
The Ethernet line card (ELC1) is designed for networks where high switching capacity and multiple
high speed Ethernet interfaces are required for smooth technology and capacity migration driven
by HSPA and LTE growth. The main ELC1 applications are MPLS trunking over the 10-Gigabit
Ethernet links, in mesh or ring topology, and functioning as an IP or IP VPN service endpoint
e.g. at the RNC site.
The ELC1 provides an easy and significant capacity upgrade to 8660 Smart Router and 8630 Smart
Router. The single-slot-wide ELC1 card combines 20-Gbps switching capacity and a fixed number
of two 10-Gigabit Ethernet and twelve one-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. All these interfaces offer
wire-speed performance.
Mixing of ELC1, IFC1 and IFC2 in the same network element is allowed. As all the other 8600
cards, the ELC1 is hot-swappable.
Despite the fact that ELC1 improves the power efficiency per bit, the power consumption per card
is greater than with IFC and therefore it should be taken into consideration in node configuration.
The maximum number of ELC1 line cards is determined by the cooling and power-feed capacity
of 8660 Smart Router and 8630 Smart Router. The ELC1 cooling requirements can be found in
chapter 6.9 ELC1 Cooling.
In 8660 Smart Router the maximum configuration of twelve ELC1 cards can be achieved with the
8660 Smart Router R2 subrack equipped with 8660 Smart Router R2 DC48 Power Input Modules.
The ELC1 is also compatible with 8660 Smart Router subrack version 3.0 and 3.1 with which the
number of ELC1 cards may be up to six depending on the other cards in the network element
configuration.
Each ELC1 has a point-to-point connection via the backplane to all other slots in 8660 Smart Router
or 8630 Smart Router. 8660 Smart Router is logically divided into three clusters (slots 2..5, slots
69 and slots 1013). Within each cluster two ELC1 cards share a total capacity of 25 Gbps
between each other, whereas an ELC1 card and another ELC1 residing in a different cluster share a
10-Gbps capacity. In this case one ELC1 may send 10 Gbps traffic to two other ELC1s located in
different clusters. With good planning and knowledge of capacity matrices the network element
capacity can be maximized.

88
6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
6.3 Operation
The function of the card is to perform layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding,
packet filtering and traffic management functions. The CPU subsystem is used to control the card
functionality.
The CPU subsystem uses a high performance 32-bit RISC processor with the following memories:
89
6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
DDR3 DRAM
Application FLASH (SD-memory card)
Boot FLASH
The application software is stored in the FLASH memory. Thus, it is possible to update the software
on the field when new software feature packs become available. Similarly, the card and interface
parameters are stored in FLASH, so those are restored after reset.
PLD
I2C
I2C bus and switches are used for accessing devices such as EEPROMs, A/D converters and
temperature sensors.
RTC
The real time clock has backup for short power breaks. The time is kept for at least 20 hours (at
20 C/68 F).
A/D Converter
There is an analog to digital converter on the baseboard. It is used for measuring and monitoring
operating voltages and temperatures.
The NPU subsystem performs layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding, packet
filtering and traffic management functions. For data buffering and other functions, the NPU uses
DDR3 and RLDRAM2 as well as TCAM memories.
The FPGA subsystem implements the backplane interface using 4 Gbps per lane towards IFC1,
IFC2, CDC1 and CDC2 cards, which contain the BRAIN ASIC. Alternatively, a triple-speed
12-Gbps lane speed between ELC1 cards can be used.
90
6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
ELC1 contains an integrated power supply (DC/DC converters) on board. It generates all the
voltages which are needed within different blocks. The input voltage is fed by either of the CDCs
(redundancy with two CDCs). The generated output voltages are galvanically isolated from the
battery voltage.
During boot-up, ELC1 performs self tests to verify that the system operational status is nominal.
6.4 Interfaces
The ELC1 card provides a maximum of two 10-Gigabit ports and 12 one-Gigabit ports. There are
two virtual modules M0 and M1. The virtual M0 comprises the 2x10GBASE-R interfaces, while
M1 comprises the 12x1000BASE-X interfaces.
91
6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
The 10-Gigabit interfaces require optical XFP pluggable transceivers, while the gigabit Ethernet
interfaces use the existing 8600 SFPs.

For more information on SFP and XFP transceivers approved by Coriant and the Receive (Rx) and
Transmit (Tx) directions in them, see 8600 Smart Routers Hardware Installation Guide.
6.6 LEDs
6.7 Cabling
Cabling depends on the SFP type in the 1000BASE SFP interfaces and on the XFP type in the
10GBASE interfaces, see chapter Pluggable Transceivers in 8600 Smart Routers Hardware
Installation Guide.
See more on laser safety in chapter Pluggable Transceivers in 8600 Smart Routers Hardware

94
6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
Check that the operational temperature range of the SFP/XFP module is suitable for the
installation environment. Note that the temperature of the SFP/XFP case can be approximately
15 degrees higher than the ambient temperature. For more information on the allowed
SFP/XFP case temperature range see chapter Pluggable Transceivers in 8600 Smart Routers
Hardware Installation Guide.
The ELC1 line card consumes more power, and thus dissipates more heat than IFC1 or IFC2 line
cards (IFC+IFM). More air flow is needed through ELC1 line cards than through IFC1 and IFC2
line cards. It has a number of smaller heat sinks and one larger to which the main components
are attached.
It is important to ensure that adequate cooling is used when an ELC1 card is installed in a subrack.
8630 Smart Router subrack V1.0 and V1.1 and 8660 Smart Router subrack V3.0 and V3.1 need
to be updated with more powerful fan modules, see table below. Note that 8660 Smart Router R2
subrack already has the more powerful fan module. The software will verify that the installation is
acceptable for the ELC1 card; if it is not, the power-save mode for the card will be activated.
The ELC1 card has temperature sensors located on the card. They monitor card temperatures during
operation. The ELC1 card can endure a single fan failure. If both fans of one fan module fail, the
ELC1 cards located above it will go to power-save mode after 6 minutes.
The high temperature warning will be raised when the card is operated in high ambient temperature.
This occurs at around +45 C/+113 F ambient. Another reason why this warning can be active is if
the air flow is decreased, which can be caused by a dirty air filter in the subrack. There are also
critical temperature limits which will cause the cards to go to power-save mode if they are exceeded.
The maximum amount of ELC1 cards that can be installed in 8660 Smart Router or 8630 Smart
Router varies. The number of supported ELC1s in 8660 Smart Router can be found in the table
below. 8630 Smart Router subrack supports installation of a maximum of four ELC1 cards at up to
+45 C/+113 F if the altitude is less than 1 km; in higher altitudes (above 1 km) the maximum
temperature is +40 C/+104 F.
95
6 Ethernet Line Card (ELC1)
All empty line card slots have to be shielded with blank cover plates.
When ELC1 cards are present in 8660 Smart Router R2 subrack or 8660 Smart Router subrack V3.0
or V3.1, the blank cover plates with the air guide (part number 81.86B-LCBLANK-R6 'LC blank
cover with air guide') must be used. The blank cover plates will cover the front plane and guide
the air flow through other cards neighboring the empty slots. The usage of this type of blank cover
plates is always recommended in installations when using the more powerful fan modules. It also
increases the air flow through other cards than ELC1.
With 8630 Smart Router subrack either the older blank cover plates (81.86IBLANKCOWH-R6 or
81.86IBLANKCOVE-R6) or the new blank cover plate with the air guide can be used.
4The number of supported ELC1s is valid when only ELC1s are in use in the network element. When the configuration consists of a mix of IFC1,
IFC2 with different IFMs and ELC1 cards, the maximum supported configuration must be calculated on the basis of the power consumption figures
for all cards and modules in the specific NE.

7 Interface Module Concentrator (IFC)
7.1 Overview
An Interface Module Concentrator (IFC) is a line card baseboard and can hold up to two IFMs. A
pair of high-density connectors for each IFM carry communication between the IFM and IFC. The
well defined module interfaces make it easy to use various IFMs and design new IFMs as needed to
address specific line side interfaces. The backplane connectors carry high speed data between IFC
line cards in 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router. The main hardware components of the IFC
are the BRAIN ASIC with associated memories, CPU subsystem and power supply.

More detailed information of the software features is available in the configuration guides.
7.3 Operation
The function of the card is to concentrate packet based data received from the interface modules to
BRAIN ASIC and vice versa. BRAIN ASIC is used to perform layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching,
packet forwarding, packet filtering and traffic management functions. The high speed data links
are used to carry packets between IFCs in 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router. The CPU
subsystem is used to control the card functionality.

8.15.1 Overview
The main function of the 24xchE1/chT1 Multiservice interface module is to provide 24 symmetrical
120 short or long haul n x 64 kbps channelized E1 interfaces (2,048 Mbps), or alternatively, 24
symmetrical 100 short or long haul n x 64 kbps channelized T1 interfaces (1,544 Mbps). A
minimum of 384 channels is supported by the IFM. The operating mode is software-selectable.
The 24xchE1/chT1 Multiservice IFM is designed for indoor use only and it is not meant for
external connections. However, long haul applications, i.e. outdoors are still possible, but
that requires additional external protection devices against overvoltage.
The E1/T1 interfaces are designed and tested to withstand a 500 V surge pulse (1.2/50 s or
8/20 s) between signal wire and ground without any external protection devices. If higher
surge voltages are expected, external primary protection devices are required. The firing
voltage of the protection devices must be less than 500 V and the devices must be selected
so that no signal quality degradation occurs.

8.15.4 Cabling
For optimal performance, the 120 shielded twisted pair cable should be used for E1 and the 100
shielded twisted pair cable for T1. The maximum allowable line attenuation is 30 dB @ 1.024 MHz
for E1 cables and 30 dB @ 772 kHz for T1 cables, which define the maximum cable lengths.
Note that an adequate signal-to-noise margin is required for achieving the maximum allowable
cable attenuation figure.
