Inthelastsectionwelookedatthemethodofundeterminedcoefficientsforfindingaparticularsolutionto

andwesawthatwhileitreducedthingsdowntojustanalgebraproblem,thealgebracouldbecomequite
messy.Ontopofthatundeterminedcoefficientswillonlyworkforafairlysmallclassoffunctions.

ThemethodofVariationofParametersisamuchmoregeneralmethodthatcanbeusedinmanymorecases.
However,therearetwodisadvantagestothemethod.First,thecomplementarysolutionisabsolutely
requiredtodotheproblem.Thisisincontrasttothemethodofundeterminedcoefficientswhereitwas
advisabletohavethecomplementarysolutiononhand,butwasnotrequired.Second,aswewillsee,in
ordertocompletethemethodwewillbedoingacoupleofintegralsandthereisnoguaranteethatwewillbe
abletodotheintegrals.So,whileitwillalwaysbepossibletowritedownaformulatogettheparticular
solution,wemaynotbeabletoactuallyfinditiftheintegralsaretoodifficultorifweareunabletofindthe
complementarysolution.
