any new homebuyers are
getting more home for their
money, but less land. The cost
of getting more space in a
home is causing for less outdoors space in
2016 and 2017. Getting both large land and
a large house might cost potential owners
more money.

New homes are getting larger, but their
lot sizes are getting smaller. The median size
of a new home increased from 1,938 square
feet in 1990 to 2,300 square feet in 2016, but
lot sizes during this same period decreased
because between 2006 and 2011, homebuyers
were showing demand for larger homes and
larger lots. As home prices dropped during
the housing crisis, greater affordability gave
buyers opportunities to seek larger outdoor
spaces. Today's pullback in lot sizes comes as
builders look to cut costs.

"When home prices appreciate at a fast
pace, the land value rises even faster, which,
in turn, drives the cost of homes higher,"

tips to allow kids to play safely in the comfort of their own backyard

H
omeowners often aspire to
have attractive backyards
that look like they belong in
a magazine. While these can
be picturesque and functional for adults,
they may not be entirely practical for
homeowners who have young children,
especially when the majority of the yard
is covered with paving stones or concrete.

When young children are part of a
household, homeowners may benefit by
designing yards that are both functional and
fun. Incorporating safe play areas for kids is
one way to unlock the potential of both big
and small backyards. As children run off to
enjoy a playground, safety is the last thing
on their minds. Kids are most interested in
scaling ladders to tree houses or coasting
down slides. That's why adults must take it
upon themselves to keep injury prevention
in mind.
SafestPlayground.com indicates that
playground-related injuries routinely
result in severe fractures, internal inju-
ries, concussions, and dislocations. In the
majority of playground injuries to children
younger than age five, the head and face
are affected. Children between the ages
of 5 and 9 experience more leg and arm
injuries than younger kids. The Consumer
Product Safety Commission states 70 per-
cent of children's injuries occur on home
playgrounds. More than 28,000 children
are injured each year on playgrounds
across Canada, according to Parachute, a
national injury prevention organization.

When considering playground equip-
ment for the yard, parents need to make
safety a priority. The Canada Safety Soci-
ety advises parents to follow the "5 S's of
Playground Safety": Surface, structures,
site, supervision, and safety. Surface is
the first of the five rules. Parents should
assume that children will fall. To lessen
the blow of falls, choose playground
equipment with a perimeter of six feet
of a softer surface, such as sand, pea
gravel, rubber pieces or wood chips. This
material should be between six and 12
inches deep. Next on that list is structure.
The structure of the play equipment
should be built from sturdy materials.
Pressure-treated lumber was once the
standard, but it's not advisable for kids'
playgrounds, as the chemicals used in
the lumber can leach and young children
may actually bite or pick at the wood.
Use cedar or another wood that resists
decay. Once the structure is built, inspect
it frequently for damage.

Site is the third of the five rules
for having a safe playground.. Look
around the landscape for an ideal place
to locate the play set. There should be
no obstacles that children can hit while
sliding or swinging. Avoid overhanging
branches and do not place equipment
too close to trees or fencing. Try to keep
the set out of direct sunlight, which can
make components heat up and scald
young bodies. Keep close supervision
while children are in the backyard. Do
not leave children alone while they are
playing to prevent them from using the
play set in an incorrect manner.
Safety is important when following
the directions for installation. Make sure
all posts are anchored into the ground se-
curely. Railings should be spaced so that
children cannot get stuck between them.
Check that metal components have not
rusted and that there is no additional
excessive wear. Be sure that no tools or
other dangerous items are left around the
yard. Backyard playgrounds should be
built with safety in mind. Learn the rules
of play equipment and yard safety.

donations and some of their
programs, but thats not all
they have to offer. Many
dont know about the way Goodwill
gives back to its local community with
programs that point people in the
right direction. Among other things,
they sell donated home goods that
cant be found anywhere else.

Ill be honest with you, I grew
up in New Mexico and when I was
younger, Goodwill stores were not
the nicest places, said Gary Doll,
community relation coordinator of
Goodwill Industries of New Mexico.
But in the last 10 years, my good-
ness, you walk into the Goodwill
stores and theyre clean. Our stores
are maintained very well and most
have been remodeled with new
lighting, clean floors and very wide
aisles, Doll Added. Theres more
than enough room to walk around. I
was just blown away when I started
here because I thought this is not
your grandpas Goodwill. Its a
whole new world.A big part of
that image makeover rests with its
newest store at Alameda and Coors
NW. We recently opened a new
store called Good Threads, Doll
said. Its a step out on the ledge for
Goodwill because its a higher end,
higher quality store. Basically, higher
end clothing, home accessories and
jewelry--its a really nice store.
The idea is feature items that
stand out, said Pam Russom, mar-
keting coordinator. Its all hand-
selected so its brand-name designer
merchandise, she said. Its about 80
percent clothing and accessories and

the store look like they came out of
a new retail store, Russom said. We
had this hand-carved, solid wood
queen-sized headboard in there that
was probably a $3,000 piece. It was
amazing for $499, she said. There
are blown-glass lamps. Youre going
to find the best of the best. Leather
recliners with zero wear. Everything
you find in there is pretty pristine,
such as lots of gold and silver jewelry
and Native American jewelry.
goodwill donations
The story is somewhat of a by-
product of how Goodwill receives its
donations.Weve had valuable paint-
ings that people didnt even know the
value of, or even some jewelry, Doll
said.People may think that grandma
had costume jewelry and they donate
it. We have an appraiser that goes
through all the jewelry that is donated,
tests it and checks to determine the
value. Its shocking some of the things
we get. Good Threads brings the
number of stores across New Mexico
to 15, employing about 375 people,
Russom said.In our other stores,
youll find a mixture of clothing, home
goods, small kitchen appliances, desk
lamps and sizeable furniture pieces,
Doll said.There are certainly great
bargains for home supplies to be
found, and our prices are competitive,
if not better than most.
It has to be that way, however,
because Goodwill operates a series
of community-based services that I
fully funded by the money brought
in through its stores. We have two
different audiences, Doll said. The
people who donate here and shop
here, but the people who donate
feature story / home goods
arent necessarily the ones who shop
here. Then we have this whole other
clientele thats on service side. We have
100,000 people who come here for our
free programs. So we have a rather di-
verse group that we try to address in all
of our work.

Just last year alone, Goodwill served
more than 17,000 people who took
advantage of programs. The programs
included are acquired brain injury case
management, job training, job placement,
job-skill preparation, senior employ-
ment program, and support services for
veterans and their families. Last year
was our 75th anniversary and the thing
that shocked me was that after 75 years
in New Mexico, people still are not aware
of all the programs that we provide, free
of charge to citizens of New Mexico,
Doll said. Job training and job skills,
thats our mission for training people to
get jobs, how to apply for jobs. Its hard
to believe that 75 years later, people still
dont know about it.
The efforts of the caseworkers defy
description, he said.This program helps
them to get the services that they are due,
Doll said.And quite honestly, its even more
than that. I listen to people, the ones sitting
around us are the brain injury program, and
I hear them talking with their clients and its
astounding. Did you call your doctor?They
literally walk them through their life-- Its
amazing. I jokingly say but not so much
the more I work there, the more I believe
it, this is the first place Ive worked where
people truly had a heart, he added.The
people that work around us are incredibly
concerned and caring human beings, theyre
not here for the money. They do wonderful
work reaching out and touching lives. Sadly,

Goodwill also adapts to the needs of the
community.This is the call center Mecca
of the universe, Doll said.So last July,
Goodwill saw the need, because we hear
it from our job developers, that call centers
were going crazy here. So we established
a call-center training program. Its a free,
three-week course that teaches the ins and
outs of working in a call center. Basic soft-
ware, attitude, honesty, presentation and
work skills that you can use in any profes-
sion, like how to be a good employee and
things like that. It gives you a step ahead
in the call-center race. At the end of our
three-week course, youre going to meet
with several human resource directors from
partner call centers and trust me, theyre all
looking for people all the time.
With about 12,000 call center jobs in
the greater Albuquerque metro area, its a
great way to find a job, Doll said. Theyre
always looking, and for the most part,
they start in the neighborhood of $10-$12
an hour and they have very good benefits.
Some have daycare centers and gyms on
site. I hear those things and I think there
is no reason to be unemployed in the
city of Albuquerque. There isnt a reason
because these jobs are there, he added.
You may start out answering phones, but
theyre looking for supervisors, manag-
ers, and IT people. Theres a job industry
flourishing here and the biggest prob-
lem is finding people that want to work.
Thankfully its been successful. Weve had
people who have had jobs the day they
walk out of our class because they met
with the HR people. Its not guaranteed,
but you have the opportunity and its free.
All of this is free, so of course capitalizing
