Volunteering at the Bangkok Refugee Centre
The plight of refugees and asylum seekers is a hot issue around the world. Did you know that there are urban
refugees who dont live in those big camps but are found in the worlds cities? Bangkok is one city where
we find these people living at the moment. They have had to flee their native countries due to persecution,
violence, famine and natural disasters. Most of them are here without any means of support and look to the
Bangkok Refugee Centre (BRC as it is commonly known) for the provision of services to help them
survive.
You want to help? Yes. One way is by volunteering your time and skills at BRC. A few hours of your time
each week could make a big difference to the lives of these struggling and displaced people so often
forgotten in our world.
BRC is a service facility devoted to helping refugees and asylum seekers living in
urban Thailand. This population is among some of the most vulnerable and desperate
in the world. Many must rely upon the care of others to persevere and survive.
Refugees and asylum seekers in Thailand are no different from those living elsewhere.
BRCs aim is to ensure as best we can that all asylum seekers and refugees enjoy
personal security and a basic quality of life. This work is carried out in partnership
with UNHCR as the guiding partner and in cooperation with other NGOs, faith based
communities, educational institutions and individuals working to help this target
population. The aim is to enable urban refugees to live their lives with dignity and to
keep hope alive in the midst of their struggles.
Our facility, located in inner Bangkok, is open to a target group that is of a significant
number and growing. They are young and old, single and members of families, male
and female from many different countries, fleeing a war in Syria, persecution in
Pakistan or the aftermath of a bitter civil war in Sri Lanka. These are the sorts of
countries they come from and the sorts of reasons they seek asylum. Every day we
work with these people to help them find a better life and to show them a bit of care
in a somewhat unfriendly world. To this end, we offer a number of services to our
urban refugee population. These services aim to assure medical care and offer psycho-social
support, education and vocational training. BRC does all this as an implementing partner with UNHCR.
From here, UNHCR distributes its monthly subsistence allowance open to eligible registered refuges and
offers legal and resettlement advice.
It is our goal to continue helping refugees and asylum seekers into the future. We
cannot do this alone. With the help of volunteers, we can maintain and enhance the
care we provide for them.
Volunteering gives you the opportunity to help people at a hands on level. It is something that benefits you
as well as those you help. Volunteering can be a great way to learn and to contribute to a real need in our
world, to help a group of people who are truly vulnerable and desperate. Yes, they need money just to
survive. Money is not the only way to help and often giving of ones time and self is the greater and better
way to go in reaching out to people in such need.

Thank you for your interest in the Bangkok Refugee Centre. BRC is a day facility of the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), administered by the
Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees (COERR). COERR is a non-profit,
humanitarian organization of Caritas Thailand within the Thai Catholic Church. It
partners UNHCR in supporting urban refugees in Thailand through its work at BRC
where urban refugees are offered a number of essential services. BRC provides a safe
space for urban refugees to access legal advice, health care advice and referral,
psychological help and social work intervention to help address their numerous issues.
There is also the education program helping students to access Thai schools. This is
open to children of both asylum seeker and refugee families. The population takes
advantage of this safe setting, coming to find a friend, to just sit and socialize or to
take up an opportunity to partake in vocational and recreational activities being
offered on site.

To ensure that all asylum seekers and recognized refugees enjoy personal security and
safety through increased protection and more efficient provision of assistance.
Our Vision
To proactively render appropriate humanitarian relief services, particularly to
Extremely Vulnerable Individuals (EVIs), that will enable them to live their lives with
dignity and encourage them to be productive and caring members of their community.
Placement
All BRC volunteers will be assigned the best possible, available placement and be
supported as needed. We aim to meet your volunteering needs and to see that BRC
policies and procedures protect you. BRC takes very seriously its responsibilities for
the safety and welfare of refugees, asylum seekers, staff, volunteers and the
organisation as a whole.
BRC has need for volunteers in three areas of its work.
1) The education unit Volunteers assist in teaching refugee children who are
students at the small school campus within BRC. You dont have to be a
qualified teacher but just be able to help children learn in the areas of English,
mathematics, art and computer. It is a good way of relating with the children
and their families.
Under UNHCR policy, this education units focus is to offer a curriculum that will
prepare refugee students to enter the Thai school system. This fits within the
Thai government policy of having all children in Thailand attend school. This
means that the formal curriculum at the BRC education unit is taught using Thai
as its focal language.
The place then for English speaking volunteers is in helping Thai teachers offer
any tuition in English and deal with students who dont know Thai but have

English as their second language. There is also an option to help facilitate

educational opportunities offered to the wider refugee community and
education programs offered in the community setting. This
gives the chance to be more creative in volunteering in this area and may
demand a period of dialogue with appropriate parties.
2) The social unit - Volunteers help the social workers in their outreach to refugee
families. The work would focus on visiting refugee families in their homes and
writing up reports on their cases, engaging in assessing their needs and aiming
to respond to these needs. This placement would require a minimum
commitment of six months.
3) The medical unit - Volunteers with a health background help in referral of cases
and giving advice within the urban refugee population. This could also involve
home and community visiting and referral of cases to other possible and needed
services. This placement would require a minimum commitment of six months.

Qualifications:
With basic computer knowledge in, Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint) & Photo Editing (Adobe Photoshop). I can also do web-page designing,
tarpaulins, invitations and other computer works. I have also attended some
conferences and talk on how to improve my ability. I have good oral and written
communication. In fact, I can speak English and Filipino fluently, and three dialect
from the Philippines, Hiligaynon, Bisaya, and Waray. I am exposed to different
cultures in the Philippines. I can easily adapt or find myself with other people. I am
also invited to join journalism training such as Gusting Journalism (University of San
Agustins Campus Journalism) and Annual Division of Iloilo Journalism Training. I
have good skills in managing people and resources. I can lead in different ways. In
my past experiences as a student-leader I encountered a lot of student with
different personalities and attitudes. I am capable of handling such differences.

When I volunteered in the Philippine Red Cross I managed to utilized all our limited
resources that we have, in order to render service. I am a certified first aider. I am
trained in Philippine Red Cross about Community First Aid and Cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR). I am also trained to respond in any Disaster or calamity.
I can manage and organize events and programs. I have been a facilitator both
Regional and Provincial events. I have been the main organizer in some leadership
training.
Volunteer History:
I started volunteering since I was in first year high school. I started to be an Altar
server which helped me develop my skills. Until now, I am still an altar server. I am
also helping in organizing event in our parish, every time they need more manpower.
When I was in second year high school, I attended a Community First Aid training in
Philippine Red Cross which I become a First aid volunteer. When the Philippine Red
Cross Iloilo needs student first aid volunteers and to respond for any disaster, I am
always lending my hand to help. In fact, I became a president of Philippine Red Cross
Iloilo Chapter, Alimodian National Comprehensive High School- Senior Red Cross
Youth Council when I was in third year. This makes me more committed to the
organization, that I became one of the organizers in some of the Philippine Red Cross
Activities. I also elected as a President in Supreme Student Government. This election
opened a bigger opportunity for me to develop my skills in managing people. I was
elected as the Vice-president in the Iloilo Division Federation of Supreme Student
Government during the convention of all School Council Presidents in the province of
Iloilo. When I was in Fourth Year, I managed to work as a president of our school as
well as vice-president of the student in the whole province of Iloilo. This early training
in High School mold me to be an aspiring leader in our society. I entered in the
seminary for a year and became a chairperson of all first year seminarians. During my
stay in the seminary, a disastrous typhoon hit the Philippines, Typhoon Yolanda or
commonly known in its international name Haiyan. I volunteered for almost a month
every weekends in the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 7
Office. We packed relief goods as well as the distribution if such goods. When I
decided to transfer school in the University of San Agustin, I returned volunteering in
the Philippine Red Cross and as well as in our parish. I am now a founder of a small
local non-government organization, the Youth Leaders Organization. I found this for
the reason that I want to help my fellow youth to be knowledgeable student leaders
that can help the society as well as in nation-building. My small organization also
enable students to find an alternative solution for the contemporary social issues and
problems, that would enhance youths capacity to become effective leaders. I devout
my time and efforts in building my newly founded non-government organization.

I am only 19 years old, and I am so optimistic that youth can change our society to
better and livable one. I am a third year political science student in the University of
San Agustin. Ive been a seminarian in Rogationist Seminary- Cebu for a year, but I
realized religious life is not for me. So I decided to take-up political science in order to
enhance my ability and to help others as well. I am active social media user
(Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+) as well as I am an administrator of our
Municipal Facebook Page. Aside from social media, I also love reading political
journals, articles and researches. Aside from political books, I am also interested in
other topics such as, Public Administration, ASEAN, Philosophy, Women
Empowerment, Gender Equality, Travels & Geography. I am a daily online news reader
(Rappler, Manila Bulletin and ABS-CBNnews). Aside from reading I also love sharing
my ideas and insights to other people based on what i have read and my analysis. I
love talking to other people especially when we are exchanging our opinion and ideas.
I am a vocal person, I am not the person who would stay quite if I know theres
something wrong. I am also a culture lover, I love history. South East Asia has a
diverse culture, but despite of its diversity, I found unity in them which is, beauty. I
love studying other culture aside from my own country. I am also a frequent attendees
of exhibits and looking for historical landmarks. I have been immersed to different
Indigenous People in the Philippines. I dont have interest in sports, but my interest is
to be a volunteer. Aside from Red Cross, where I am a frequent volunteer, I am also
involved both governmental and non governmental organization such as Department
of Social Welfare and Development, Apostolate for Children, Local Government Units,
Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), Altar Server Ministry, Youth for
Environment, and other organizations. I am now having my small local non-
government organization that aims to help youth to become an effective citizens, if
not leaders, in our society. I am an ambivert, a person is comfortable for being alone,
as well as comfortable with the group. I can easily learn things. Thats maybe my
special skill, because particularly, I do not excel in one area, but the only thing is I can
be in different area of responsibility. I am responsible person and I am goal and
people-oriented person, I always want that my team will enjoy and in process
achieved what we want. I am the person who cant go on without laughing and making
jokes around. Peoples first impression to me are not good, maybe because, I am
having a poker face to those I dont know, but when they get to know me better, they
changed their perception about me.
