Dielectric Reponse on Current Transformers

Testing CTs Option 1

Testing CTs Option 2 with screen

Third Option CT with Capacitor Tap

OMICRON Page 5
CT with Capacitor Tap

Like a combination of a CT and a Bushing test

Measure from HV Termination to capacitor tap

Short HV terminations of CT . - to minimise interference

OMICRON Page 6
CT with Capacitor Tap

Why use this diagram?

Shorter bushing represnts Capacitor tap.

Longer bushing represents HV termonations of CT

OMICRON Page 7
CT with Capacitor Tap

Three measurements are possible

HV to Capacitor Tap

Capacitor Tap

Hv to tank ( with or without screen)

Question ?

Do we expect the same level

of moisture for each of these
measurements?

What do you think?

OMICRON Page 9
Question 2

Some CTs are filled with sand.

How does this affect the moisture

assessment?

OMICRON Page 10
Interpretation of Results

Where the insulation medium is cellulous and oil the

automatic assessment is valid.

When another substance

(sand) is introduced it is no
longer valid.

There is no hump
(Interfacial Polarisation)
present with CTs

OMICRON Page 11
Interpretation of Results

Where the automatic assessment is not valid relative

indications can be used to assess the relative
level of moisture between a series of same type
CTs
