W est Bengal State Centre (WBSC) of the Institution in collaboration with National
Jute Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India organized the Thirtieth
National Convention of Textile Engineers and National Seminar on Intervention of
Frontier Technologies in Textile and Jute Sector during March 03-05, 2017 at Kolkata.
The Chief Guest, Prof Ashutosh Ghosh, Honble Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta
in his inaugural address, emphasized on collaborative research in the field of applied
technology which will benefit the society at large. Prof Ghosh also spoke on recent
advances on jute technology and its gradually increasing applications in various fields.
Mr Arvind Kumar M, Secretary, National Jute Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government
of India, graced the occasion as the Special Guest. He highlighted the importance of
Jute fibre and different associated technologies and pointed out the need as well as
the gradually increasing demand and market of natural fibre made technical textiles
in different spheres of life. Mr Kumar also stated that commercialization of these new
technologies is the need of the hour for sustainable development of the jute sector as
well as for improvement of the socio-economic condition of the farmers, artisans and
other stake holders who are linked with this cultivation based fibre. He also mentioned
the favourable policies adopted by the Govt. of India for the advancement of the

Societal Engineering is a concept
which tries to encapsulate purpose and
potential of engineering for development
of the society and the nation. This is not
a new field of study but a combination
of all engineering disciplines with a
philosophy to bring up individuals
who can make some changes for the
betterment of the society. It emphasizes
on how engineering education and its experiences have superior
foundations for improving the society. Engineering education
should in particular do more than just producing an engineer. The
aim of Societal Engineering is to cater to the daily requirement
of life with powerful, quantitative and creative problem-solving
skills of engineers. Engineers should use their engineering
experience in a way that prepare them and make them passionate
about improving quality of life through innovation, addressing
and appreciating the challenges in the society. A combination of
specific skill sets like global awareness; systems-level thinking,
understanding the innovation and entrepreneurial process from
product design to deployment and effective communication are
the basic foundations for achieving the goal of developing the
society. It is also very important to understand the directive of
the public policies on technology innovation and advancement.
The conventional engineering disciplines like Civil, Mechanical
and Electrical along with the extended applications of basic
sciences, technology and engineering have created space for
the interdisciplinary avenues like structural, environmental,
agricultural, chemical, textile, geotechnical, mining, transport,
software, engineering etc. to cater to the need of the society as
well as the nation. Apart from these, the applications of artificial
intelligence, nanotechnology, biomedical, electromagnetic
interference, genetic engineering are also providing customised
solutions to health, hygiene and medical needs.
Thus, Societal Engineering empowers engineers and technicians
to interact with people from all backgrounds and disciplines in
order to move organizations forward and address societys
challenges through technology in cohesion with the political
system, the business community and the society in general.
This will help to generate new products or services not only
for business or economic advancement but to create a social
consciousness for improving the quality of life and a better
society.

context and its potentiality and beneficial application in the modern society.
She emphasized on interdisciplinary R&D approach for fibre production
and marketing of new generation textiles for growth of the trade. Dr S M
Chatterjee, Chairman, Textile Engineering Divisional Sub-committee, WBSC,
IEI, stressed for adoption of automation and robotic control mechanism
in textile manufacturing industry for improving accuracy, precision and
optimal utilization of energy, time, materials as well as labour. Prof (Dr) S K
Ghosh, Immediate Past Chairman, TXDB, IEI and presently Member of the
Board, gave a comprehensive summary on the activities of IEI in general
and Textile Engineering Division Board in particular. Earlier Mr Kashmir Lal
Mallik, Chairman, West Bengal State Centre, IEI, welcomed the august
gathering and Prof A K Samanta, Department of Jute and Fibre Technology,
University of Calcutta and Convener of the Convention, elaborated on the
theme of the National Seminar. The esteemed Dr B K Chakrabarti Memorial
Lecture was delivered by Prof (Dr) Prabir Kumar Banerjee, Former Director,
Indian Jute Industries Research Association (IJIRA), Kolkata and Former
Professor and Head, Department of Textile Engineering, IIT Delhi, on the
topic Textile and Other Fantasy, where he emphasized that the true
sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination. He portrayed the
imaginary outlines of novel use of textiles fabric for communication of new
age flexible dwelling places as also of flexible transportation units. On this
occasion, four Eminent Engineering Personalities, namely, Dr Chandan
Chatterjee, Former Director, The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development,
Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, Gujarat; Prof (Dr) Prabir Kumar
Banerjee, Former Director, IJIRA, Kolkata, & Former Professor and Head,
Department of Textile Technology, IIT Delhi; Dr N N Mahapatra, President,
Colorant Ltd., Ahmadabad, Gujarat; and Dr S P Mishra, Director, School of
Fashion Technology, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha were felicitated
for their immense contribution to Textile Engineering and Technology. The
IEI Young Engineers Award in Textile Engineering Division for the year 2016-
17 was conferred to Dr R Rathinamoorthy, Assistant Professor, Department
of Fashion Technology, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu
and Mr Santanu Basak, Scientist, Central Institute for Research on
Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), Indian Council of Agricultural Research,
Matunga, Mumbai. The award winners presented their technical papers on
contemporary topics pertaining to the textile engineering discipline. On this
occasion, an exhibition on Jute Diversified Products & Technical Textiles,
was also organised which was inaugurated by Prof G Thilagavarthi,
Chairman, TXDB, IEI along with other eminent textile personalities. The Book
of Abstracts and the second Annual Technical Volume of Textile Engineering
Division Board (2016-17) on the topic Rise in New Generation Textiles were
also released by the Chief Guest, Prof Ashutosh Ghosh and other dignitaries
who were present on the dais. Mr Ranjan Dutta, Honorary Secretary, West
Bengal State Centre, proposed the vote of thanks. Large numbers of articles
reflecting the theme of the National Seminar were presented and discussed
during various technical sessions. Prof N N Mahapatra, President, Colorant
Ltd. presented his paper on Self-Cleaning Textiles where he mentioned that
self-cleaning property will become a standard feature of future textiles in
the days to come and other commonly used materials to maintain hygiene.
Dr S P Mishra, Director, School of Fashion Technology, KIIT, Bhubaneswar,
Odisha, in his paper Fashion Industry in India: An Overview, highlighted
the valuable contributions of Indian fashion industry in bringing out the rich
cultural heritage of India to the world blended with modern age wide variety
of products. Prof Apurba Das, IIT Delhi, spoke on Evaluation of Textile
Materials New Approaches. He stressed on the need for innovation in the

field of textile testing. Prof A K Samanta, Calcutta University and Convenor
of National Advisory Committee of 30th National Convention and Seminar,
discussed on UV protections and antimicrobial properties of cotton, khadi
fabrics applied with zinc oxide, nano-particles. Prof (Dr) G Thilagavathi,
Chairperson, TXDB, IEI, and Head, Department of Textile Technology, PSG
College, Coimbatore and Prof S Neelakrishnan, Head, Department of Auto
Mobile Engineering, PSG College of Tech., Coimbatore, presented paper
on Development of Polyester Needle Punched Nonwovens for Oil and Air
Filtration Applications. Mr P K Choudhury, Principal Technologist, National
Jute Board, Kolkata, emphasized on Jute Geotextile and its design and
development for different geotechnical applications. Prof. Swapan Kumar
Ghosh, Head, Department of Jute and Fibre Technology, Institute of Jute
Technology, Calcutta University and Board Member TXDB, IEI, delivered
lecture on A Study on Need for Test Standards for Evaluation of Jute
Geotextiles, where he emphasized the dire need for testing standard of
Jute Geotextile like synthetic geotextile as jute geotextile is totally different
from synthetic geotextile though functions of both are almost same.

To promote appropriate technology, assist in building up design & research
talents and, most importantly, to help in nurturing potential R&D venture amongst
engineering students pursuing Diploma/UG/PG/Ph. D courses, The Institution of
Engineers (India) had instituted the R&D Grant-in-Aid program way back in 2001.
Like every year, the Institution invites applications for the session 2017-2018 for
funding industry-oriented R&D projects and research initiatives aimed at improving
the life-style of common people from engineering students pursuing Diploma/UG/
PG/Ph. D courses. The application form and guidelines are available in our website
https://www.ieindia.org. The projects should be carried out under the guidance of
faculty members who are Corporate Members (AMIE/MIE/FIE) of IEI. Membership

IEI Industry Excellence Award 2017
The IEI Industry Excellence Award has been instituted to recognize industry
leaders for their innovation, excellence in engineering operations and thereby,
to lead their industry in competitive manner. The benchmarks created by the
industries in India have included productivity, quality, safety and performance
assurance thereby giving India the rightful place in the global markets.
Realizing that such industries can provide the leadership to a large number
of other industries in the country, it has been considered appropriate by the
IEI Council to institute the IEI Industry Excellence Awards in the year 2008.

are invited from prospective applicants for IEI Industry Excellence Award
2017. The last date of receipt of application for the Award 2017 is July 31,

The Council at its 689th meeting held at Ahmedabad approved a new grade
of membership Student Membership (SMIE) - meant for undergraduate
students pursuing BE/B.Tech (AICTE approved) or equivalent qualification,
completion of which will make them eligible for Corporate Membership.
The salient points regarding this new membership grade are given below:
Benefits of Student Membership (SMIE):
a. Student Members (SMIE) are entitled to enjoy following benefits
regarding IEI journals:
i) Make free e-access by logging in through www.ieindia.org
ii) Can avail the journal hard copies at a concessional rate.
b. Student Members (SMIE) may access the IEI Library (Sir R N Mookerjee
Engineering Information Services Centre) at the headquarters as well
as State and Local Centres of IEI.
c. Student Members are entitled to receive the monthly colour tabloid
IEI NEWS free of cost.
d. Opportunity to participate in technical events e.g. Seminars,
Symposia, Conventions, Workshops etc. organized by various IEI
