Overhauling Military Compensation

By COL Dan Merry, USAF (RET) MOAA

That train doesnt look right

Back in 1988, I was watching two trains roll side-

by-side into Flagstaff, Ariz. Theres nothing unusual about
that but then I noticed something just wasnt right. The
box cars were swaying a little too much, and the sounds
were a little off. Just as I said, That train doesnt look
right, a massive derailment began. Cars buckled their
clasps, and wheels bounced instead of rolled. I learned
later that an errant track switch had steered both trains onto
the same track about a half mile ahead of me. From my
vantage point, I had front-row seats to the wreck. Thank
goodness no one was killed.

Similarly, today a clash of ideas is emerging concerning

JROTC Support Needed
By LTC Gary Engen

One of the missions of MOWW is to support

ROTC/JROTC units. One way we can support is try to
assist a unit when they have instructor/cadre shortfalls.
While at an awards presentation this month at Green
County H.S. (Greensboro, GA) AFJROTC, I learned that
the current Senior AF Instructor (SAFI), MAJ David
Conley, is departing at end of this month to take another
teaching job in Carrolton, GA and the school and the
USAF have not yet identified a replacement. The NCO
instructor, Msgt Joe Miley, has been there 12 years and has
no plans to leave soon but will have a tough time running
the program by himself. The Green Co Superintendent, Dr.
Chris Houston, asked me if I knew how they could get a
replacement for MAJ Conley and soon. I explained the LTC Engen presenting the MOWW ROTC Award to
normal procedure to him but he was afraid that, due to Cadet Linward Jackson at Augusta University, 25 APR 17
Greensboro being a small school (450 enrolled in high
school) in a rural town in middle Georgia that there may
few retired AF officers willing to move there and take the
job. In my observation of the awards ceremony that
evening (actually was an excellent AF Dining Out event)
it was obvious that the school and parents thoroughly
supported the program. The Superintendent even
mentioned that his office may even be willing to pay an
incoming replacement more than the minimum pay to get a
good instructor hired.

The reason I am writing this is to ask any of our readers if

they know of a Air Force officer (CPT, MAJ, LTC, COL)
that is or will be soon retired that may be interested in the
AF JROTC job at Green Co. H.S. If you do, or have any
contacts that may know of someone eligible for the job, let
me know and I'll forward the info to the county
Superintendent.
