2014 PERFORATING TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

Perforating

From the inception of perforating, two basic methods

have been used
Projectiles
Explosively formed jets (high temp/high velocity radial
displacement)

Bullet or projectile method used from 1932 through today

Jet Perforating has been the industry standard method

since the late 1950s.

Jet Perforating

The technology for Jet perforating

was originally developed
as an anti-tank weapon
during World War II

Well Explosives Inc, later Welex Jet Services, was formed

after WW-II to commercialize the technology.

Welex Jet Services, patented and licensed jet perforating

technologies and began manufacturing products.

2014 PERFORATING TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

Extreme Overbalance Perforating - 1990s

EOBP uses controlled high pressure in the wellbore at

the instant of perforating to extend the perforation
tunnels into the formation and overcome any damage
due to drilling or crushed zone created by the shaped
charges
The tool setup is similar to the TCP gun assembly

Extreme Overbalance Perforating with Propellant

Sleeves, StimGun - late 1990s

StimGun uses propellants (solid rocket fuel) in

combination with conventional perforating guns to break
down formation damage

Focused energy
Multiple layer application
Near gas and water stimulation
Thin layer application
Up to 20,000 psi of pressure at the perforations

Dynamic Underbalance (DUB) Perforating - SurgePro

Dynamic underbalance has always been a part of

perforating with hollow steel carriers. But, with high
speed gauges and build ups, we are now finding how to
use it more effectively.
A dynamic underbalance is created when well fluids
rapidly enter the gun volume and/or additional surge
chamber
