Module Analysis

The expository reading and writing course is developed by the California State University

Advisory Committee. This class is offered to 12th graders statewide at various high schools

throughout california. Students who plan on continuing to a higher education, such as a JC, CSU,

or UC are highly encouraged to consider taking this advanced english course. This class provides

each student with a workbook that students commonly refer to as readers. In each three to four

week module, the reader provides the student with several articles about the topic. Within each

module, students are presented with an abundance of research, resources, and activities to be

completed based off of the articles.

For example one of the modules is titled Juvenile Justice, in which students read multiple

articles about teenage criminals, what sentencing they receive, and what makes a child

deserving of life behind bars. Specifically in this module I enjoyed reading various articles

including Kids Are Kids- Until They Commit Crimes, by Marjie Lundstrom, and Startling

Finds On Teenage Brains, by Paul Thompson. Both of these articles discussed reasons to why

teenagers are not yet deserving of an adult punishment due to their immaturity and massive

amounts of brain tissue loss.

On the other hand, author Jennifer Jenkins wrote On Punishment and Teen Killers, and

due to her personal experience of her sister being murdered by a teen, she has completely

opposing viewpoints compared to Lundstrom and Thompson. All of the articles I read in this

module had me thinking, especially Gail Garingers, Juveniles Dont Deserve Life Sentences.

Garingers article was addressed to the topic of rehabilitation over punishment. This module

offered a plethora of information to help me create a greater understanding of how complicated

and flawed our juvenile justice system really is.
