Wheatlake Festival back for
another go-round
REED CITY The Wheatlake
Festival of Races will be back
for another go-round this spring.
The festival is scheduled for Sat-
urday, May 20. Spectrum Health
Reed City and Big Rapids spon-
sor the event.
Online registration closes
Sunday, May 14. In-person reg-
istrations will still be accepted
during packet pick-up but does
not guarantee a shirt. Packets
can be picked up on Friday, May
19 at the Holiday Inn in Big Rap-
ids from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and also
the morning of the races at the
Bandshell behind the Big Rapids
Middle School.
Courses are available for the
whole family including:
Half Marathon This
13.1-mile course begins at the
Reed City Depot and ends at the
Bandshell behind Big Rapids
Middle School. Registration
starts at 6 a.m., and the race be-
gins at 8. Registration costs $80.
Busing to the start line is avail-
able at 6:45 and 7 a.m.
10K Run, new in 2017 This
6.2-mile course starts from Paris
Park and continues to the Band-
shell behind Big Rapids Middle
School. Registration is at 6 a.m.,
and the race begins at 8. Regis-
tration costs $50. Busing to start
line is available at 6:45 and 7 a.m.
5K Run and Wellness Walk
This 3.1-mile course starts in
Hemlock Park and ends at the
Bandshell behind Big Rapids
Middle School. Registration
starts at 8 a.m. and the race be-
gins at 9. Registration costs $30.
Kids Dash Children 12 and
under can run the field at Big
Rapids Middle School. Registra-
tion is at 10 a.m. The dash begins
at 10:30. Registration is $1 per
child, collected at registration on
the day of the races.
Free skin cancer screenings
will also be provided at the Band-
shell from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on
the day of the event. The awards
ceremony will be held at 10:40.
Race proceeds go to the Susan
P. Wheatlake Cancer and Well-
ness Fund, an endowment of the
Spectrum Health Foundation
Reed City and Big Rapids Hospi-
tals. The fund provides resources
and materials for use by patients
and families facing cancer in our
region.

Area Schools are getting many
upgrades due to a recent bond
proposal that was passed.
The $3.8 million bond will
help enhance the life of faculty
and students in the high, mid-
dle and elementary schools.
An additional $350,000 from
the general fund savings will
be added for projects as well.
There will be multiple projects
that include roofing, technol-
ogy and concrete.

Ed Brigham
MARION Ed
Brigham, of Marion,
passed away Friday,
May 5, 2017, at his home
in Hartwick Township.
He was 69.
Mr. Brigham was
born January 14, 1948,
in Evart, to
Vernon Rex
and Anna
Mae (Corey)
Brigham.
He gradu-
ated from
Evart High
School in
1966 and
played football and
baseball, where he ex-
celled at shortstop.
Ed was a U.S. Army
veteran who served his
country proudly in Viet
Nam earning the rank
of Sergeant.
He mar ried Deb
Reynolds in Big Rapids
on May 2, 1970. Ed
worked for McLachlan
Drilling for 32 years, re-
tiring as a Drilling Su-
perintendent. He en-
joyed hunting with his
kids, grandkids, nieces
and nephews and fish-
ing.
Mr. Brigham is sur-
vived by his wife of 47
years, Deb Brigham of
Marion, five sons: Todd
(Kristi) Brigham of
