EXE INTRODUCTION TO STEEL BRUSH in purpose of using a steel brush is to make larger letters than can be made with a pen (one quarter inch is about as wide as a pen with a reservoir can be made and still function properly). The SPEEDBALL Steel Brush is dipped and used like a pen and has a very flexible tip. It performs the same functions as the conventional lettering brush, but with its seven staggered layers of steel and brass and its four interchangeable sizes, it gives you far more control than a lettering brush. Steel brushes range in size from 4 inch to 4 inch and allow you to make letters more than seven inches high. Because it is a wide tool, you can dip the steel brush into different color inks and get some very interesting effects, such as changing color within a letter or a word. Hand lettering was the only means of written communication until the printing press came into use during the 15th century. All too often, aesthetic pursuits have been pushed aside by industrial progress. In recent centuries calligraphy has had to compete, not always successfully, with mass production. Both the printing press and the typewriter brought about the near demise of calligraphy. But early in the 20th century, English scribe Edward Johnston revived the craft, and today calligraphy is enjoying a new wave of popularity. Study and practice are essential to becoming an accomplished calligrapher. Study the various letter forms and the angles or directions used to produce each one, Practice upper and lower case letters, and numbers. When you can form the individual characters, begin writing words and sentences. Keep evaluating your work so you can improve on it. Strive for a rhythm, a consistency in making the letter forms. Calligraphy is a very useful as well as aesthetically pleasing skill. There is great satisfaction in being able to give a striking individuality to the letters you address; to invitations, announcements, posters, birthday or anniversary cards. It differs from ys, other types of calligraphic lettering in that it is produced with a flexible nib, such as the Hunt 99 or 103 pens or the J OSMIROID Copperplate nib. Copperplate lettering is slanted a NOPE at 55° to the base line. This slant may vary slightly but is never less than 50°. It is important that all the heavy strokes and all the light strokes be uniform. A uniform pattern will produce a truly beautiful script. During this period religious books, papers, and decrees of all kinds were hand lettered almost exclusively in the Blackletter style, which was intentionally condensed to save space on precious and expensive parchment. It is a formal, ornate style of lettering, based on a combination of diamond-shaped strokes and_ straight downstrokes. The Blackletter style was perfected by scribes during the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries. Today it is still used for awards, diplomas, and certificates. Blackletter forms are best made by using the C-style ) rule o of MeN SPEEDBALL pens, the OSMIROID B nibs, or an ELEGANT WRITER marker. These pens all produce thin and thick strokes and crisp letter endings. To form these letters, hold the pen at ntivel 7 a 30° degree angle to the writing line. Blackletter may seem somewhat complicated in the beginning, but it is actually one of the least difficult lettering forms to master. Practice both the elementary strokes and the combinations of strokes used to produce the letters. Use both upper and lower case letters to ensure legibility of your work, since upper case letters in this style, without lower case to break them up, can be very difficult to read. While this is often true, calligraphy can also be used in many less formal and more creative ways. It can interact with the words and layout of a piece to convey a meaning.
