[Instructor note: After students have a blank grid, pencil, and optional straight edge in
front of them, read aloud the following instructions:]
You are about to draw an animal based on your listening skills, your memory, and the
coordinates that I read to you out loud.
On the grid in front of you, columns begin with a number. Show me column 9.
Rows begin with an alphabet letter. Show me row B.
If I read to you the coordinates 9B, first find column 9. Then find where row B meets
column 9. The dot at 9B will be your starting point. Then draw a line to the next co-
ordinates you hear. You may put a tiny x over the dot if that helps you keep your
place.
For practice, show me 9B. [Instructor note: Check for accuracy.]
Now show me 20B. Draw an imaginary line from the first dot (9B) to the second dot
(20B). Continue the line from the second dot (20B) to the next coordinates your hear.
[Instructor note: Continue practicing until mastery. Do not proceed until students can
locate coordinates without help.]
If instead of coordinates you hear the words start a new line, the next coordinates
you hear will be your new starting point. Well practice in a moment.
For this activity I will read 2 coordinate points at a time. [Instructor note: you may
change this to 1 coordinate point at a time, depending on skill level.] Listen carefully,
and keep track of all of your starting and ending points. Its easy to lose track!
Lets practice.
Imagine that your first coordinates are: 2J, 3H. Draw an imaginary line from the first
dot to the next.
Imagine your next coordinates are: 5K, start a new line. Draw an imaginary line from
3H to 5K, then stop. Begin a new line when you hear your next coordinates.
Any questions?
I will only read each set of coordinates one time. There is no talking during this ac-
tivity, only listening. If you are unsure what you heard, take your best guess. We will
check your final work at the end. Then you may color your creation.
