Introduction
Oh no! Quick, cadets, the library media specialist needs your
help. A demolition crew came through and demolished the
library on accident. All the books are scattered
everywhere. You must learn the Dewey Decimal
Classification system so you know where to place the books
in their proper location and get the new library back in
order. Cadets, it’s up to you to learn where the books go.
Head back to your barrack (computer station) and bunker
down (work hard) to complete the Demolition Dewey
WebQuest.

Cadets, you are, no doubt, wondering how this WebQuest will

help you. Only the best and brightest have been selected
to participate in this challenge. By the end of the
WebQuest you will be able to locate a book not only in this
school library, but in most libraries spanning the nation.

The Task

Cadets, what you

will do is...

Work through the

Dewey Decimal

Classification

(DDC) Interactive

Program.

Identify and

record information from DDC program on the worksheet(s)

you print out.

Create a DDC brochure to teach younger students about the

DDC in the future.

Demonstrate what you have learned by completing a library

scavenger hunt.

The Process
The Dewey Decimal Classification system provides a plan for
organizing fiction and nonfiction material. The organization
helps make it easier to research and gather information on
specific topics. Most libraries use the Dewey Decimal
Classification system to organize the library, so learning the
system now will help you throughout your future.

Step 1: Cadets, click the interactive program “Do We”

Really Know Dewey?
Cadets, working solo, each student must complete a worksheet
for credit.

Before you begin print the “fill in the blank” worksheet that
accompanies the interactive program. The worksheet will
guide you through the program. Hang on to the
worksheet until you have completed the entire
WebQuest.

Worksheet

Remember cadets, it is up to you to put the books back on the

shelves in the proper location.
Step 2: Cadets, working in pairs, create a DDC
brochure.
Cadets, working in pairs you will create a stylish and fun
brochure over the Dewey Decimal system. You can add to and
decorate the brochure the way you want, as long as the
required information is included.

Each pair will be given construction paper, white copy paper,

colored pencils, and glue. You need to create a brochure using
information found in the links below. The brochure should be
easy to follow, neat, and include all 10 Dewey Groups. Look at
your worksheets to see a list of the 10 groups. In addition to
the 10 groups, the brochure should include examples of three
subgroups for each group. That means you should have the
10 Dewey groups (divisions) and three examples of the type of
information you would find in a particular group.

Here is an example of the information required, but you need

to do one for each of the 10 groups.

Only one brochure with both cadets’ names is required for

credit.

Second link for brochure (look up by groups)

Third link for brochure (look up by groups/divisions)

Step 3: Book Scavenger Hunt
Cadets, working in pairs, you will assume the opposite role
from step two. If you were the Dewey Dude in step two, you
will be the Dewey Tator in step three, and vice versa. The
Dewey Dude locates the proper book and assures its return to
its proper location. The Dewey Tator records the information
off the spine of the book.

Print the document and work together to locate the books with
the corresponding call number listed in the chart below. Only
one copy with both cadets’ names is required for credit.

Evaluation

Cadets, the brochure and the library scavenger hunt will be

graded separately according to teamwork, accuracy,
completeness, and creativity. Below is a rubric that
explains how the projects will be judged. The worksheet
will be graded according to accuracy and completeness
based on a percentage value. All three items will be
calculated together for a final grade. Each item has a value
of one-third, or 33%.
