Power to Play: Meet Our Superheroes

Strand: Creation Studies


Grade Level: Three
Learning Expectations:
Students will be introduced to the unit on nutrition and meet the superheroes that
will guide them through the story

Estimated Time: One sixty minute class period (Monday)

Expected Prior Knowledge:


Students will have some prior knowledge on what it means to be active
Students will have completed a field trip to discuss the main food groups that will
further be explored in this lesson

Summary Lesson Chart:


Introduction Activity Meet Coco and Brock and discuss
Main Activity Ms. Ls slideshow with the super mission. Get
students into triads and complete super mission
Concluding Activity Day Two open: Present their superhero teams

Objective: Become introduced to the unit and have students create collaborative
settings for their exploration into this new unit

Method:
1. Discuss how we will be moving into a new unit on nutrition: discuss the field trip
a. What was memorable about it for you?
b. What are the food groups that we discussed?
2. For our new unit we are going to be learning about how we can be superheroes
in our lives and for our families. Explain how you want them to
3. Have students listen to the CD program for power to play.
a. What type of snacks did Brock and Coco eat before their missions? Why
did they choose those foods?
b. What are their super powers?
c. What superhero powers do you want to have?
4. What snack would you eat your get your super powers? Ask students to help
create a class list of power snacks they can eat to help them have the power to
play. If students mention junky snacks, remind them that those are good treats
but are not powerful treats that can help you get superpowers.
a. On the chart paper colour code the snacks to each food group and ask the
students which snacks fall in which food group
5. Super hero mission! Play Ms. Ls power point with the students super mission
6. Then get students into triads or groups of three to help them in the unit ahead.
7. They will complete the activity sheets with their superhero team names and
emblems.
a. Note** each student receives a worksheet and a group superhero name
sheet
8. On day two prior to the second lesson students will present their superhero
teams to the class and then sing the power to play theme song

Grouping students may be a challenge for a lot of the class. Create groups where
effective work can be
