11 THE SEASON OF LENT
ADVERTISING : Fr Kenneth Mendes
John Braganza
With Ash Wednesday on March 1, 2017, we begin the specially grace-filled season of Lent, during which we are invited to
meditate on the Passion, Death and Resurrec on of Our Lord.
In his message for Lent 2017, the theme of which is, "The Word is a gi . Other persons are gi s," Pope Francis states, 'Lent is a
favourable season for deepening our spiritual life through the means of sanc fica on oered us by the Church: fas ng, prayer
and almsgiving.' At the basis of everything is the Word of God which, during this season, we are invited to hear and ponder
more deeply May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gi of God's Word, be
purified of the sins that binds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need."
I urge you, my dear people, to make every eort to spiritually benefit from this period through more prayer, acts of penance
and works of charity. Lent should be for each one of us a "spiritual retreat" experiencing the touch of God's Mercy spread out
over forty days, and also becoming agents of mercy ourselves.
Canon Law authorises Episcopal Conferences to determine, in place of abs nence, other forms of penance, especially works
of charity and exercises of piety. The CCBI has discussed this in depth, and I am giving below several alterna ves suggested.
However, I encourage you to go back to our ancient prac ce of abs nence from all meats on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of
Lent, besides also following one or more of the op ons given. We need to be generous with the Lord. In memory of our Lord's
Passion on Good Friday, and so that the fruits of Lent con nue throughout the year, I recommend that in our homes and
ins tu ons, we abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. This is also a me for sacramental Confession. Please do not wait
for Holy Week, but already now, benefit from the graces oered by the Sacrament of Reconcilia on.
Canon 1249 states: "All Christ's faithful are obliged by divine law, each in his own way, to do penance. However, so that all may
be joined together in a certain common prac ce of penance, days of penance are prescribed. On these days, the faithful are in
a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity, and to deny themselves by fulfilling
their obliga ons more faithfully, and specially by observing fast and abs nence."
The days for the common prac ce of penance are Ash Wednesday and every Friday of the year.
Alterna ve forms of penance suggested in the Archdiocese of Bombay are:
A. Forms of Prayer:
a. A ending Mass.
b. Making the Way of the Cross.
c. A visit to the Blessed Sacrament.
d. Reading the Scriptures.
e. Praying the Liturgy of the Hours.
f. For the homebound: Medita ng on the Lord's Passion.
g. Family Prayer together (the Rosary, or Scripture Reading and Reflec on, or some other prayer).
B. Acts of Penance:
a. Missing a meal: breakfast, lunch or supper.
b. Taking strictly vegetarian meals, avoiding even fish and eggs.
c. Abstaining from alcohol and/or smoking, for those accustomed to these.
d. Avoiding films/television and other forms of recrea on.
Fasng:
a) The days prescribed for obligatory fas ng are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Some may feel inspired to fast every Friday
in Lent, and this is a beneficial spiritual exercise.
b) The law of fas ng binds those who have completed their l8th year ll the beginning of the 60th year.
c) Those who are fas ng are to take only one full meal per day. A light breakfast may be taken in the morning and a light supper
in the evening. But one can always reverse the order of the meals e.g. take the full meal in the evening, instead of the a ernoon.
d) Those who cannot keep the law of fas ng without considerable diculty because of health, work etc. are excused from the
observance of the law. Our faithful are however urged not to excuse themselves too easily from this obliga on, as it is but fi ng
that on the two prescribed days of fas ng, we unite ourselves in a special manner with the Passion and Death of Our Saviour
by a more intense form of penance.
Dispensaon:
In case of diculty regarding the fulfilment of the obliga on of common penance and fas ng, or a doubt regarding the existence
of factors excusing from these obliga ons, a dispensa on may be obtained from the Parish Priest or Confessor.
A dispensa on from the law of common penance and fas ng is hereby granted to members of the Armed Forces and Security
Personnel in the Archdiocese and to travellers by land, sea or air.
Lenten Alms:
The Lenten Alms collected this year have been earmarked for St Pius X College, Goregaon the Diocesan Seminary of Bombay.
Easter Dues:
Easter Du es would require that the faithful who have made their First Communion, should receive Holy Communion at least
once a year during the Paschal me, unless for a good reason, the precept is fulfilled at another me during the year (Can. 920).
Besides, the faithful are reminded that those who have reached the age of discre on are bound to confess their grave sins at
least once a year (Can. 989).
In the Archdiocese of Bombay, the Easter Du es can be fulfilled this year between Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017, and
Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017.
Our penance during the season of Lent should transform our hearts, enabling us to experience God's love, to become merciful
in turn, so that in an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbour and to
devote ourselves to what the Church's tradi on calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith
finds expression in concrete everyday ac ons meant to help our neighbours in body and spirit: by feeding, visi ng, comfor ng
and instruc ng them.
In Jesus crucified, God shows His desire to draw near sinners, however far they may have strayed from Him.
D
o we consider the Bible a table around which the family gathers, and a founda on on
which the faith of our family is built? On Bible Sunday, as we try to draw some prac cal
ways to share the Word of God at home, perhaps we will be surprised to discover that
the family Bible, regardless of whether it is prominently enthroned or is gathering dust on our
bookshelf, is one of the most valuable spiritual treasures of a Chris an home.
Indeed, the Word of God is living and eec ve, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetra ng
even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern the reflec ons and
thoughts of the heart," writes the author of the Le er to the Hebrews (4:12).
But how is the Word of God to become "living and eec ve" in our homes, in our families,
in our professional and social rela onships? There are a few prac cal ways to make the
treasures of the Bible into a table at which our families are nourished and strengthened for
the Chris an life.
Given the hec c and stressed pace of life and our typically overworked schedules, making
family me for the Bible reminds us of the need to put God first. Gathering around the table
of God's Word enriches and strengthens the experience of family as a 'domes c Church'.
This me dedicated to reading the Word of God puts the whole family into living communica on
with God. Everyone gathered in this family ac vity - married couples, parents and children - is
brought to a living encounter with Christ, who is present as the Word among them.
It is a wholesome prac ce to introduce children to Sacred Scriptures once they receive
First Holy Communion. It helps them to connect to the readings proclaimed at Mass. This
rela onship of the Bible to the liturgy means it is invaluable for arming children in the faith
of the Church: it allows them to make the connec on between what is proclaimed and heard
in the liturgy with what is read in the home.
Parents can also choose to integrate family prayer me with the reading of Scripture. The
Liturgy of the Hours is biblical in content and inspira onal, through and through. So when
praying the Liturgy of the Hours as a family, whether Morning or Evening Prayer, the family
par cipates in the common and universal prayer of the Church. The family can also experience
the riches of God's Word by adap ng this ancient approach to a medita ve and prayerful
reading of Scripture in the home.
This will move members of the family spontaneously from hearing to living God's Word. The
lives of the saints are filled with examples of holy men and women who have translated God's
Word into ac on. The saints stand out because of their unique and graced capacity to be not
only hearers, but doers of God's Word. In the faith, hope and love of the saints, God's Word
recorded in the pages of the Biblecomes alive in the book of life.
Parents must narrate Bible stories to their children, and devote me to reading and discussing
the various levels of meaning in the sacred stories. When children, with their natural capacity
for awe and wonder, marvel at the biblical stories, they can be led to connect the story of
their life and their family to the story of salva on itself, irresis bly living their faith eec vely.
Biblical stories and figures who reveal human weakness and sinfulness provide opportuni es
to families to discussat age-appropriate levelsthe reali es of human experience in the
light of God's love and mercy and thus build a culture of mercy, which Pope Francis invites us
to in the year 2017.

O Come ye to Calvary @Versova
and walk the Via Dolorosa this Lent
The Greatest man in History, JESUS,
had no servants yet they called Him Master;
had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher,
had no medicine, but was sought out for Healing,
had no army, yet kings feared Him
won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, but still was crucified buried in a tomb,
yet HE LIVES TODAY! and waits for each one of us.
The Via Dolorosa (Via Della Rosa) also known as Jesus' Way of the Cross and 14 stations of the Cross route, marks Jesus' path
after being convicted by Pilate, as one of the most important and meaningful Holy Land attractions to worldwide Christians. Those
who have had the privilege of walking "The Via Dolorosa" in the Holy Land, would have experienced a meaningful Journey full
of Peace, Joy and Satisfaction. However, making the Via Dolorosa Trip to the Holy Land is not practical for the vast majority.
So the alternative is to meaningfully walk the 14 Stations of the Cross in one place and get that inner peace and satisfaction.
Calvary@Versova is one such place in the Archdiocese of Bombay where 15 Stations of the Cross have been errected across the
Grounds of Our Lady of Health Parish in Versova, Andheri West. Every year different Parish groups, Cells and Associations from
across the 10 Deaneries of Mumbai and also the Vasai Diocese find time to make that Journey and walk the Stations of the Cross
expressing the desire to come again. Apart from walking the Way of the Cross, pilgrims find time to visit Institutions in the Parish
viz: the House of Charity and Vimala Convent and spend time with the inmates.
The Church grounds are open to all Church groups from across Mumbai and beyond.
Visiting Groups desiring food arrangements {Breakfast, Lunch, Tea @ Rs.150/- per head (Veg)and @Rs.200/- per head (Non-Veg)} may please
contact Jasmine D'Souza (M:9920303012 / 9820133891) or Peter Lobo (M:9004530603)
Individuals wishing to walk the Way of the Cross can join the Versova Parish when it conducts the Way of the Cross during Fridays of Lent (under
lights) from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm or when the Versova Parish Youth enact the Way of the Cross on Good Friday from 7.00 am to 10.00 am.
